I'm worried Petruccele's kicking is too bog ordinary to add to our swag of sub-standard kicks

Is he that lawyer bloke ?

I know it's only a highlights package, but that compilation of Petruccelle isn't flattering in terms of disposal and clean hands. I like his attack on the ball though.

Agreed. Don't think there was an effective disposal amongst that whole lot. If that's the talent on offer then we should be trading our picks away for proven talent.

Matthew Ling from Falcons (no relation to Cameron) looks to be a very classy left footer with good pace and decision making. Hate to say, but he reminds me of a certain ex #1 pick that used to play for us. Currently running out of half back and certainly could move into midfield. Slight body, hunts the ball and will fill out. Not sure if he'll be available at our current second rounder, but I like the look of him. Quite a few talls high up in this draft, a small running machine may slip under the radar.

Hamish Brayshaw racked up 30 disposals, 8 marks, 11 tackles and kicked 5 goals in TAC Cup this past weekend. He had a really good season for the Sandringham Dragons last year and has been exceptional in the games he's played for them this year and with that in combination with the solid level he's played at in the VFL this year, he's a smokey. Andrew Brayshaw will probably be gone before pick 20 but we'd most likely be able to take him with pick 10. At this stage I don't think we will though but with a strong finish to the season and a strong showing at the combine it is absolutely possible.

As others have suggested, Bailey Fritsch is a huge possibility. I'd rather we took him with our 3rd round pick just because of out of him and the other prospects lingering in that area, he is most likely to slide due to the fact he is a mature-age player (although barely) but of course, that could be being greedy. If Melbourne has him as the best player at that point in the draft, 100% snap him up.

Noah Balta is a 194cm 92kg key defender who is a chance to be taken with our 2nd pick. He's a top 20 prospect but is a defender so it's entirely possible he slides a bit. If we don't get Jake Lever I think we might consider picking him up. For his size he's fast and agile and is a monstrous kick of the footy. He's also smart and we could do with a smart key defender.

Jack Petruccele's ceiling is very high. Dylan Moore is small but he has elite fitness and looks like a real competitor. Charlie Constable could slide and if he does, would be worth the selection. I think with the 10th pick we'll go for need which is a speedy outside midfielder who is a good kick, and with the 27th either best available or someone who has real X factor. Or maybe just Hamish Brayshaw so that his brother comes to the Dees when his contract expires ;) Looking forward to the draft

Balta  sounds as if he would appeal to the MCC "kick it long" members ?

He is another I'd love but I reckon he'll fall between 10 and 27 so mightn't be able to get him.

I watched him a couple of weekends ago in ballarat and for someone who looks like a typically outside player given his physical stature, some of his defensive efforts, tackling and spoiling was super impressive.

He looks like he'll be a very very good player. A great balance of attributes.

Super quick, beautiful left foot and was happy to scrap. Looks like a classier version of Jasper Pittard but with the same competitive nature.

Watching one of the Draft shows on Foxtel last night, they mentioned this kid for our first pick

21. OSCAR ALLEN

Key forward, 191cm, 83kg, West Perth/Western Australia

Buckenara says: Allen was one of the most consistent players of the championships, which saw him win the Larke Medal as the best player after booting 11 goals in four games. He’s a nice kick for goal, has a good pair of hands and makes the most of his chances. He’s a good size and appears suited to the modern half forward role because he has a big engine and can run all day. I expect he’ll be a standout at the draft combine.

They mentioned him as playing more backline though, team him up with Lever in pre season. Be interesting to see how close they are.

Oscar Allen was mentioned on the Fox Footy Channel combine and draft programme in connection with West Coast -

The young gun every AFL club should take with its first pick in the 2017 national draft

The player they associated with Melbourne was Oscar Clavarino who trained with us earlier in the year as one of the academy players on work experience. The thing is that they compared him with Jake Lever and I wonder whether that would be a good thing given the fact that we also have the Macs and Sam Frost as other key defenders (even allowing for Tom Mac moving to the forward line).

I'm getting to like Charlie Spargo who might be small and recovering from injury but he has football in the blood and is first and foremost a real footballer.

Oscar Allen goes 16-21 in my opinion.  Unlikely to be there at 29 and not our top priority.

I've looked through Brett Anderson's Big Board, Cal Twomey's 25 to watch and Knightmare's rankings:

8 - Top 10 regulars:
Rayner, LDU, Dow, Cerra, Stephenson, D Fogarty, Naughton, Higgins

7 within 20:
Brayshaw, Bonar, Hayes, Brander, Clark, Coffield, Constable

Father son + academy likely gone before 29:
Naish, Ballenden

Consistently next best:
Murphy, Garner, Ling, L O'Brien, Richards, Oscar Allen, Balta

There's always a lot of group think with the popular media players but I'd say getting any of the top 15 is unlikely.

It's more likely a few of the next batch fall to 29.

I hope we take Fritsch is he is available. Not impressed by any highlights of the under 18's. I don't profess to know a lot about them as I don't get to many TAC games anymore. Stopped going last year. But young Fritsch looked good at Casey and shows a decent amount of upside. I'd take a stringy lad - who has senior footy experience and upside - ahead of an unproven commodity. A lot of room for improvement.

No idea what anyone sees in Petracelle. Baffled.

Anyone have any opinions of Clavarino?

His AFL quality attributes are common knowledge amongst those that have followed/watched him in the flesh this year.

I can only assume that you, like others, have formed your opinion from the vision of one Vic Metro game that’s floating around which of course in isolation is quite underwhelming.

If not, then it’s me that’s baffled. Because I rate your football knowledge and I know you’d rate his ability.

When the AFL converts to AFLX in a couple years and they add in a basketball hoop for the Mega-Points Power-Play it will all make perfect sense.

From everything I've read on Petruccelle he seems to need to improve his kicking a bit more, but in saying that, he didn't start focusing on footy until midway through 2016 I believe. Huge upside for improvement and was the quickest in the 20m sprint at the combine.

I haven't seen any of these kids play, I'm only going off draft reports etc, but I'd probably look at Ling with our 1st pick and Petruccelle with our 2nd, if both still there. ?

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak

    MELBOURNE BUSINESS by The Oracle

In days of old, this week’s Thursday night AFL match up between the Demons and the Blues would be framed on the basis of the need to redress the fact that Carlton “stole” last year’s semi final away from Melbourne and with it, their hopes for the premiership.  A hot gospelling coach might point out to his charges that they were the better team on the night in all facets and that poor kicking for goal and a couple of lapses at the death cost them what was rightfully theirs. Moreover, now was

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,
