  2. I didn't attend the MFC Best & Fairest this year, but it has been communicated to me by someone who did, that Kate Roffey spoke of an earlier function where the MFC 2021 Premiership 23 dined with the Board and were presented with "Premiership rings". I'm actually an advocate of everyone who plays at least one senior game in a Premiership year gets a Premiership medallion, but I respect and appreciate there are sound arguments against this. If the club wanted to commemorate the Premiership with MFC rings then this was the golden opportunity to award them to the entire 2021 squad. Giving them to just the 23 who played is appallingly tone deaf to the idea that it takes a full squad to win a flag and just drives a wedge in the playing group. Look no further than the May/J.Smith/Melksham incident this year to see why. I'm horrified by this totally stupid idea.

  3. I’ve told this story here before but that doesn’t stop me from telling it again, amirite?! Heads up, it’s a long one. I chose the Dees as a 7yo within months of emigrating to Australia. And that was as one of eight siblings, the other seven of whom had adopted Carlton, the team for them to the death (and still is). The first time I saw Melbourne play was vs. Carlton, of course, and I don’t quite know why but I was instantly drawn to this team. They caught my eye, and before long, my heart. But I didn’t tell a soul. I especially couldn’t tell my brothers, in particular my eldest brother with whom I was extremely close. I knew it would break his old dark navy blue heart to discover that my heart was beating true for the red and the blue. So for a couple of decades I masqueraded as a Blues devotee. I only got to watch the Dees twice a year when they (we?) played the Blues. My older brothers took me to every single Carlton H&A match, countless finals and three grand finals (all Carlton). I wore a duffel coat with Bruce (11) Doull, I had Carlton posters on my bedroom wall, I went to training and met the players, all those things a proper diehard does. This continued until August 2000 when my brother tragically died, at which time I “came out” as a Dees supporter. One of my brothers to this day doesn’t talk to me because of this. With hindsight I guess it was a bit insensitive that I adorned my house in red and blue leading up to the 2000 GF. I came home one day and he’d left a note on my (red and blue) front door which said something to the effect of “His body isn’t even cold yet, and you’ve tarted up your house in those revolting colours like a circus tent.” Anyways that might explain why I’m so overtly (and loudly and proudly) passionate and devoted to our Club. The dam walls had burst and I could finally adore them with unbridled passion and now there’s no stopping it. 😁 PS: Told you it was a long story 😉 PPS: I lied. We went to every H&A match EXCEPT for Windy Hill because feral Ess thugs + small child = potential bodily harm, or worse. 😬

  4. It is with a mixture of despondency and embarrasment that I have to confess that my username is my first name and the initial of my second. I was going to use Nowcmonthemightydemons but at my age it is best to use something I can effn remember. And luckily I still remember my name. (Pres. Reagan visiting a nursing home goes up to one of the residents and says 'Do you know who I am?'. The resident replies 'No, but if you go to reception they will be able to tell you'.)

  7. What a disgraceful subterfuge @WalkingCivilWar! No doubt you also allowed your poor deceived brother to buy cokes, chips and other treats for his “Carlton supporting” sinister sister.

  10. Completely agree with your OP @old55. If true, this is a ridiculous, potentially culture-undermining move that evokes the bad old days of Cameron Schwab and those nuffy blazers, except it has the additional factor of splitting the playing group. I wonder what Goody and co in the FD think of this. You've got one part of the footy club trying to create a team first, all of us approach and culture, and then you've allegedly got a nuffy board handing out rings. Maybe the board should be kicked in the ring?

  12. Ah yes but people will say a average game he plays is poor. and a good game average etc I don’t get the continual butt hurt, yes he left, players do, we had some come to us that way and we have lost some that way. The “goodbye” message is laughable, yes it was short but so was his excited to be at Freo part. Not all want to write a bloody essay.

  13. Essendon are now ranked "elite" in the sacking category. Everyone thought they had peaked when they started sacking people the day after they were appointed. But now they're sacking them even before they're appointed. If they learn to deliver this level of efficiency on the field, look out!

  14. My first kick in Under 12s went through for a behind ... for the opposition. A loose ball luckily bounced my way in the back pocket, I grabbed it and kicked it and it grubbed off the side of my boot and rolled through the other team's goal. Things went downhill after that. I've always maintained that I could have played VFL but that my career was cruelly cut short by a tragic lack of talent and courage.

  15. Under 17s I once kicked 12.1 against a bean-pole I felt sorry for. Can’t remember anything except for the .1 About 20m out straight in front and fluffed it. I also remember once collecting and bombing from about 40m tight on the right forward flank and it was touched on the line apparently. BS. Twice I messed up in the goal-square. One of those, I was at the top of the square, and my teammate was on the line, with a defender in-between. Complete [censored]-up. The other time, I dodged a player one-on-one in the pocket and then kicked it into the post from a metre out on a slight, manageable angle. I also once marked on the defensive goal-line with a minute or so to go, a point down on a windy day, and just bombed it long. Floated out of bounds on the full. The question: do other people experience past sporting life like this? I can’t remember a single heroic moment (I polled well), just all the things I messed up.

  16. Don’t know why, but when I listened to Kate Roffey talk at the B&F about the Committee room dinner and presentation of the rings, I didn’t like it. Whether it’s the timing (it’s last seasons win), the exclusiveness, or the American thing, I can’t put my finger on it.

  17. Been keeping a close watch on Daniel and had the opportunity to have a chat with him at the B&F. I asked if he had grown at all since arriving and he said he was now 195cm. Also asked about working with May and he was very appreciative of the help and instruction he was getting from him. He is a terrific young fellow and definitely has that determined look about him when he is out on the field. I can see him getting more chances next year.

  19. The 23 got the playing experience, the medallions, the dias, the lap of honour and all the photos. This was a chance for the club to honour the whole squad and, worse than miss it, they've fluffed it badly.

  24. I had a post drafted about people with similar profile pics and how I subconciously merge them into the one identity. Then I realised I still have a stupid Christmas hat as my profile picture which I set around Xmas time in circa 2010ish and never bothered changing back 😅

  25. My User Name emerged from the ZZ TOP song I was listening to when I first signed up. Was living OS at the time. I thought it described what it was like to be a Dees tragic…You think each year you are in the emperors new clothes, only to find you are left Buck Nekkid come September….

  26. Can we shoe horn a new item into the Special General Meeting about the constitution, in that every 3 months the club needs to provide an update to members on the training / social / admin facility and share their current plans? Not likely l know, but seriously poor to keep us all guessing. I guess if they had positive progress then they would have shared it atleast some of it

  27. Hey! It wasn’t easy. I had to keep a lid on it when Brian Wilson won the friggin Brownlow. And imagine how hard it was when Jimmy arrived! Also, my “poor deceived” brother took me to all the pubs in North Melb after matches at Arden Street to sell newspapers since he got loads more tips with a freckle faced lil sister in tow! Edit: he used to make me sing for all the old drunks to get even bigger tips. Many years later I said to him, “I can’t believe you pimped me out as a 7yo.” He said, “Never once heard you complain as you shoved your weight’s worth of Eskimo Pies into your face!” 😂

  30. Though, I can recall kicking 2 goals in a final against West Footscray in 1965, when my direct opponent was Laurie Sandilands. I also remember returning the figures of 6 for 18 off 8 overs, after getting 2 for 11 off the first 2 overs. I won the bowling average that year, after winning the All-rounder award the year before .Ah, the good ole days when I could still run and imagine the Demons would reign forever.

  31. I'm getting to that half-blissful stage where I can't remember what day it is, let alone bringing my wallet to the supermarket to buy dog food, and, just maybe, a bottle or two of Jacobs Creek. As they say, ignorance of what my partner was barking at is bliss.

  32. The NBA rings: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NBA_championship_ring "Rings are presented to the team's players, coaches, and members of the executive front office" The NFL: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Super_Bowl_ring "The Super Bowl ring offers a collectable memento for the actual players and team members to keep for themselves to symbolize their victory" If our Board is going to introduce some brassy American idea, they could at least do it the same way as the Yanks.

  34. Pretty please Simon! Put him forward next year. We got plenty of defenders, + our whole team floods back. Lets have a bit of talent and grunt in the forward half. He will mark, and more reliably bring it to ground than any of our current forwards. He will pressure/tackle when the ball hits the ground and make others walk taller around him due to his contested work...He will also kick many goals. Honestly if i see us devoid of forward options and he is still playing back i will vomit. We may lose something in the backline...but the gains in the forward half could be greater. We want to play a forward half game but from what i saw this year BB was such a liability when the ball hit the deck it was very easy rebounding for oppositions. Petty would be much tougher for opposition to exploit.

  36. What a year for Jake “ the Fist” Melksham hit a purple patch late in the season in the ones and then played an absolute ripper in the Granny for Casey. Although he will turn 32 next year he absolutely deserves the extra year at MFC. Good one Jake.!!

  37. Taking a ruck as early as pick 13 would surprise me as we already have two automatic selections for that position in Gawn and Grundy. I think we'd be more likely to pick up a developing big man at 37 or (even more likely) in the Rookie Draft. A tall forward or a speedy mid/HB with good disposal would be more of a need with our first pick IMO.

  40. Very good summary DIO but I don’t think Daisy was going anywhere but to Melbourne. Before the very first AFLW draft I remember her and Gill McLachlan being interviewed and, this won’t be anywhere near verbatim, but Daisy said ‘I’m going to play for Melbourne’ and Gill said ‘nothing is for sure’ to which Daisy replied ‘well I won’t be playing for anyone else’ and then there was a bit of awkwardness. It was brilliant

  41. Ah the reverse jinx, works every time! Great win, especially considering the outs. Didn't miss a beat really. 15/21 who played in the GF earlier this year. How good is Purcell? I reckon even those who recruited her over wouldn't have expected such an output. Special mention to Mithen and Heath who upped the ante in others' absence. Same for Caris who came in with the right attitude for her opportunity (5 tackles) and will find game time one way or another next season. Staying on the tackles, West (11), Hanks (8) and Lampard (7) were great in that regard and certainly weren't alone. Mackin - she kicked a pretty special goal with her first kick on debut (that's debut in footy, not just the club!) in the practice game at the G against Carlton and she was so close again, her feet just got a bit ahead of her. Exciting stuff. Speaking of exciting, Zanker out of the ruck should have been a GOTY contender, but I guess I'm pretty biased. Overall, our field kicking was perhaps the best I've ever seen by us and potentially in the league - kicking to space, kicking to advantage, kicking to pinpoint, and being able to switch up between options. Excellent vibe around Daisy's 50th, only wish it could have been at home. We should look back at the day she was drafted to Melbourne as a very important one in our club history. She could have been a Bulldog and quite seriously, I think our team would be on a different trajectory - her fingerprints are all over our culture. This video captures the love and respect going both ways between captain and teammates (and gives a glimpse of what's going on under Paxman's bandage, yikes):

  44. Agree with all of the above, expect for one thing - i reckon not fulfilling his promise was on Trapper. Always struck me as a stoner in an elite AFL player's body

  45. I still haven't seen anyone else kick a footy like Trapper did since, there have been some excellent field kicks like Davey and Green but there was something about Trav's ability to really spear it low and hard and it was impossible to defend. I didn't see the best of Robbie Flower but I remember being at the G for a Queen's birthday game around 2006 and guy next to me was telling us all about how watching Robbie on his day was like seeing someone floating on air. I never forgot it because TJ went out that day and had a sublime performance, I wondered at the time if that was the closest comparison to the great tulip I was going to see live. Travis had as much talent as anyone who has ever played for this football club, make no mistake about it.
