We had a massive training session at Casey today according to an article on AFL Live. Good news is that Salem is on track to make an early season return. Apparently it was an extensive match simulation. We need a report. Good news for Dees defender, key pair still in R1 doubt9 points

Hunter has always been a very good player. He is a steal, as many of us have posted since the trade was announced.8 points

If we are being honest he is like Weid but with a bit more versatility and adaptability. Can play fwd or back He can actually take a one grab mark which was Weid's downfall IMO so all in all its a slight upgrade8 points

GAMEDAY Practice Match of 4 x 25 minute quarters today at Casey Fields at 6:45pm This cuts across my work so I can’t make it to the game but I will try to get the scores relayed to me and posted here. I will also post the teams if I can get hold of them. What we really need to find is some local (or far away) Demons dedicated enough to the cause to turn up and report on the game.8 points

Surely no one has Schache as an expected star. 1. He adds 200cm mature body depth to cover in case of injuries, and helps drive training standards because he is keen to impress the coaches. 2. With some strong form, he'll play 7-12 games and be a part of a deep, strong squad. 3. And there is a very very small chance that somehow it finally clicks and all his potential is realised. We expect 1. If we get him to 2 we will consider it a massive win.7 points

Melbourne’s Turnover Game Total Points from Turnover Diff R1-10 +282 Pts R11-23 +15 Pts AFL Rank R1-10 1st R11-23. 8th Finals - Points from Turnover Diff • QF v Sydney Swans -40 Pts • SF v Brisbane Lions -21 Pts Pressure Watch • No.16 pressure rating in 2022 • No.3 pressure rating in 2021 Their turnover game summed up their year. The back half of the season they fell to average in that area and the result was a straight set finals exit. The signs for improvement are there though - the stats gurus expect them to be up there again this year given their defensive profile. IMPROVING AND DECLINING DEMONS *Biggest differential on form based on ranking points from 2022-2021* Improvers 1. Angus Brayshaw 2. Harrison Petty 3. Tom Sparrow Decliners 1. Christian Salem 2. Jake Lever 3. Lachie Hunter Angus Brayshaw went into the middle and his output increased. Salem’s injury affected year hurt him. Lachie Hunter only played 10 games at the Doggies and his out put waned. Jake Lever’s intercepting was above average but his disposals were down (decrease of 4).6 points

He's depth. Just as Weideman had become depth. When Sam indicated to the club he wanted to move, we moved quickly for Schache. This is on the public record.5 points

Also fails to mention BBB playing on half a leg, Gawn battling through multiple injuries, LJ putting the cue in the rack, Trac playing with a broken leg and the midfield running out of puff after a reduced preseason. Easy to look at TMacs injury as the trigger but that is grossly oversimplifying a year that full was of many issues both on and off the field.5 points

The Lions certainly kicked themselves out of the game. They hit the post a couple of times and missed a few easy shots at goal. Basically, as a hit out, it didn’t really achieve much for Casey - a few players staked a claim for a place but competition for places is going to be tight.4 points

Here’s an idea AFL HQ, invest that money in grass roots footy. I’ve read recently (given footy seasons are just around the corner) of many local level footy clubs and leagues struggling to get teams on the park due to all matters of financial problems. COVID has brought local clubs to their knees…………… but no, let’s continue to reward the elite 1% of the footballing fraternity who are already well remunerated 🤦♂️🤦♀️🤦 I mean, why should Gil and his executive mates care about the health of grass roots football 🤬4 points

I might be wrong but I think I was the first female poster on D’land way back in the day and I’ve never felt anything but welcomed. Maybe it’s because most posters didn’t know I was female?4 points

I must admit i didn't realize until the last couple of weeks how good a footballer Lachie Hunter actually is, getting him for a future 3rd round pick is incredible. He's a serious chance to be the best off season recruit of the year, he will not only add a huge amount to our team, but i think he'll take a lot of pressure off Langdon. teams did really hurt us by tagging Langdon at times. Lachie will make that much much harder4 points

It shouldn't be I couldn't agree more, and it's come a long way. There were plenty of rando derogatory AFLW comments on here when it started that I'm glad we don't see anymore. We do need to be more aware and we can always better 🙂4 points
-
Why should it be any harder for a female on here Layzie? It really shouldn’t. If it is then that’s our (males) fault, and we need to be more aware of this and be better. This site is a better place for the ladies we do have posting - I wish we had more.4 points

I’m sure I heard a magpie chortling in the background at times during the interview (true!). Several interpretations can be placed on this phenomenon, but lMO it was giving Collingwood the ‘bird’ for letting Brodie go.4 points

This is the last word from me🙃. Games won will be heavily distorted by the draw in both comps. In the AFLM by who plays the bottom 4-6 teams twice. The impact of the draw is even more significant in the AFLW where each team plays only 9 of the other 17 teams and the draw is designed to give the new teams more wins. AFL, change the method!!4 points
-
He’s done a full pre season up until the foot thing. He also happens to be the second biggest goal kicker in the competition over the last two seasons. He’s a walk up start at every club in the AFL.4 points

Fingers crossed for Josh Schache. We definitely would like to see him succeed at the Demons.🤞 As others have mentioned, it is primarily psychological for him. Josh Schache needs to be totally committed to making an impact and show aggression when playing. Josh certainly has the ability to make it. He just needs to put things into action. Anyway, I guess time will tell if Josh can break into the senior side and contribute or not.4 points

I don't agree. I think the Dogs' best 22 going into 2023 is better than it was in 2022. They've lost Dunkley, which is a major loss, but the Dogs are probably the only side in the league who can lose a midfielder of that quality and cover it - they had over-invested in their midfield in 2022. Their midfield still has Bontempelli, Macrae, Treloar, Smith and Libba whilst they're now working Caleb Daniel and his elite kicking through there too. Their forward line now has height and instead of Josh Bruce as the second tall they've got Lobb and Darcy to spread the load (I don't rate Ugle-Hagan highly but he gets to be a bit of a Fritsch-style forward there). Whilst down back they've added Liam Jones who from all reports continues to be more than capable at AFL level despite his year out. I think there are better sides holistically (Geelong, Brisbane and us) but I think the Dogs are more likely to make top 4 than they are to miss the finals.4 points

It's a great question and we need to be weary of Lobb who destroyed us last year as a Docker at the G - albeit May went off at quarter time and then out defensive structures fell apart. Infact Naughton defeated May in round 1 and JUH destroyed us in round 19 so they're all very capable. Whilst all 4 of their talls may start in the forward line at the opening bounce, there will be times when only 3 of them are in the forward line at the one time, because English will need to be relived in the ruck when he's on the bench and the 4 forwards themselves will need some bench time throughout.3 points
-
Yes. Highly likely one of them will get injured or drop form. Schache has an opportunity to prove he is more than just a depth player as some call him.3 points
-
He’s very smart, a beautiful short to medium kick and when committed a very good runner. But don’t overreact to a couple of preseason games when he’s been desperate to make a good impression. For one, we have to hope his commitment goes all year (and beyond). And his lack of burst speed and strength at the contest will both be tested at times. He’s potential a great help for Langdon but we also have to be prepared for teams running Blicavs through the wing and needing Hunter to go back or forward or Langdon forward to get a taller wing. Hopefully the coaches have plans for that.3 points

I'm assuming they're referring to Tom Morris the golfer, who won 4 British Opens. But at the age of 172, I think he's a bit old to be making a comeback.3 points
-
If he's "like" Watts then he doesn't have the necessary mongrel to succeed at AFL level. So no mongrel, then. I hope this guy succeeds (as we all did for Watts & Weid) but the historical signs aren't good.3 points
-
The pressure rating is the big one for me. Cant score on turnover if you're not putting pressure on. And its just workrate and fitness. We were clearly cooked 2nd half of the year and didnt rest anyone. I would wager we'll be back top 5 for pressure this year barring injuries again3 points

Glad he's got a second chance, this is the best way to bring about change. Footy media needs a good heel character, Tom Morris provides this. (No bombarding of Kane Cornes photos please)3 points

Nothing worse than goal highlight packages that only show the set shot and ignore the actual intersting part of how the player recieved the set shot. Was it a towering pack mark, a exquisite pass to a strong lead or a down the ground free?3 points

I thought James Jordon was BOG, controlled most of the game with Munro, but we missed White and Luke Dunstan in the middle. At 3QTime the coach said he didn't care what the scoreboard said - that was the truth. We gave up a 4 goal lead going with the wind. Schache was very good early. Varrell rucked manfully. Hibberd had a lot of the ball, but seems now behind Bowey and McVee. Disco Turner, as usual did some nice things. Kye Turner tried in a different role this week, a bit more forward - shows promise. Sestan quiet in that high half-forward role. Van Rooyen always competes hard, but Schache showed how he (Schache) is a bit cleaner around goals.3 points
