  1. Oh man. I could not work out what was going on based on the thread name. I thought Steven May had received head impact which caused concussion on a hike during training.

  2. LOL! I felt like a lost soul when I changed my name and had to wait a whole month to become Lucifers Hero again, except that the 'new' name didn't have an apostrophe which needless to say was promptly picked up by @Demonstone. I've been meaning to put the apostrophe back but I kind of like that it riles him😉 Lucifer's Hero was created at the time JImmy died. For me he was a Hero not for any particular thing but for how he lived his life and gave his all to everything he did: Demons, Reach, Family etc. I toyed with preceding Hero with 'Dees', 'Devil', 'Demons' but 'Lucifer' sounded more fun and cheeky. I'm not sure when or who shortened it to 'Luci'. I think it was one of these rascals😉: @Bitter but optimistic@Demonstone@daisycutterwho would of course write 'luci' as he only uses lower case! It is an endearing moniker and I really like that many DL's have adopted it.

  4. On the subject of not knowing if we've lost a DL'er to the other side. The day after we were eliminated from the finals I had a pm from @old deeto let me know that he wouldn't be on DL anymore, to not worry as he hadn't died. I confess to shedding a tear as I would miss him on DL. Well folks, it was the fastest resurrection you have ever seen! Within a mere 24 hours he was back posting🤩💕

  5. You are also one of the OG's I signed up in 2005 to this particular platform as one of the 'test' users when Demonland migrated over, but I was on the old platform too, which I think you were as well? Hard to believe how much time has gone by. At least we finally got that flag! (But I am still a jaded biatch 🤣)

  6. AMW has a great raft of skills with speed, agility and kicking standing out, he is a good size at 6’.0”. Could Andy be that lockdown defender that we are struggling to find or an outside mid with pace with great disposal skill? We have a couple of openings Andy feel free to seize your opportunities young man. Like the look of this kid.!!

  7. Not sold on Keeler to be honest. I see too much of Casey Sibosado if some can remember a while back. I don't see too many defensive or 2nd efforts. Jackson had that and was of of his biggest strengths. I also have heard that his fitness and work ethic can be a bit of a concern and may need some work. I put Jefferson in the same bracket.

  8. Amazing that we haven't drafted a player since his departure that comes remotely close to his skill level and talent. His ability to bullet low flat 40m passes on the chest of Neita was something you could never get enough of. Can you imagine how incredible Travis would be in today's line up!? Exactly the type of player that we're lacking.

  9. We are closing in on a top 2 finish: Essendon and Eagles at Casey. Keep up our recent 4-quarter game and we should win well and build our % further. Hoping that Collingwood beat or get close to Brisbane in round 10 lowering their % and give us a crack at top spot! Ideally top of the ladder finish is best as that team is most likely to host a Home Grand Final. It would be a massive advantage if that was us. It wouldn't be at Casey so we don't get the Home ground advantage but we would get the home crowd advantage to cheer the team over the line. And, it is about time an AFLW grand final was in Melbourne!

  11. Essendon are now ranked "elite" in the sacking category. Everyone thought they had peaked when they started sacking people the day after they were appointed. But now they're sacking them even before they're appointed. If they learn to deliver this level of efficiency on the field, look out!

  12. I hadn't seen that. How on earth could he land on a D+? His 'rationale' is ridiculously flawed. Part of it is based on the fact we didn't get a top 10 pick in the Jackson trade. Sure we only got Freo's first round pick next season, and they are likely to finish inside the 8, so its not likely to be a top 10 pick. But they are not going to finish top 2 either, so if they don't make top 4 we'll still get a pick inside the top 15. In a supposedly rich draft (though surely that has to be the biggest myth in footy - the so called super drafts), in reality how different would say a pick 9 and pick 14 be? Particularly given that we will still be in the premiership window, in that draft range we will likely be looking to fill specific needs as opposed to best available. Hell, it's possible that even if we had a top 10 pick we will get the same player we have identified at 15. Taylor has shown that he doesn't follow the herd when it comes to draft order. The same logic applies to our pick 13 in this year's draft. We are every chance of picking a player at 13 that draft watchers have say outside the top 20. And he completely ignores the fact we got the deal done early, which cleared the way to get the Grundy, and to a lesser extent the Hunter, deals done - and done in a way advantageous to us. Compare our approach to say that of the Pies, a club now paying part of the salary of two former players, with henry, which just created unnecessary angst. Or even Freo, who, for the second year in a row, jerked Lobb around before caving late and letting him go. How is jerking players around good for the current players, or for future trading? He gives the Hunter trade short thrift. The best thing he can say is we didn't have to offer much up to get him. But he completely ignores the fact that Hunter fills a clear need - an aerobic beast with good kicking skills who can play on the opposite wing to langers. Surely filling such a specific need deserves recognition - i mean doing so would be Lamb's KPI. He also gives short thrift to the fact that part of Hunter's salary will be covered, as will Grundy's. Bu the biggest flaw in his argument relates to Grundy. He reckons: 'Brodie Grundy who comes in while undoubtedly a star ruckman, is also an ill-fitting piece and will likely relegate Max Gawn to playing predominantly as a key forward next season. The positive for Melbourne is Grundy only required pick 27 to acquire which is a bargain on paper. Collingwood will pay a portion of his contract which also helps, though with the size and length of his contract, it's a list flexibility killer that will make retaining existing talent and adding rival talent within the constraints of the salary cap in future years more challenging than would otherwise be the case.' So much nonsense in that palaver its hard to know where to start, but here goes : With Jackson bailing, we desperately needed a second ruck - and not just any sort of ruck; an athletic beast who can run all day. We snared a dual all Australian who has probably 5-6 years of top footy ahead of him and is probably one of the best athletes in the AFL. Given the market, how could we have possibly done better than Grundy? An ill fitting piece? Huh? See above Relegate Max to 'playing predominantly as a key forward next season'. Bollocks. It depends bit on what he means by 'predominately' i guess, but the club want to engineer a scenario where Maxy does less grunt work in the ruck and more time up forward (no doubt as part of a strategy to extend his career). Wasn't he watching this season? That is exactly how we played Jackson and Maxy all season! Still, i'd be surprised if Maxy doesn't take at least 40% of ruck time We are in the premiership window right now and Grundy increases our chance of winning a flag in the next 2-3 years - arguably even more so than Jackson Which makes the comment about the size and length of his contract being a 'list flexibility killer' bizarre - we are paying Grundy less than we would have had to pay Jackson and we would have had to probably offer Jackson an even longer contract. And Grundy make it more likely we win a flag in the next two years to boot, IMO. Grundy's deal makes retaining 'existing talent' harder? Really? Did he miss the memo that we have long terms deals signed with Tracc, Oliver, Gus, Salem, Viney and (i think) Maxy. Who else is realistically going to be hard to fit under our salary cap in the next 3 years or so? Kozzie perhaps, but i'd be shocked if we don't have the salary cap space to offer him a long term deal on competitive coin 'adding rival talent within the constraints of the salary cap in future years more challenging than would otherwise be the case"? - isn't that true of any quality player traded into a new club? I mean, just one example is Jackson. I firmly believe he will be super star of the competition. But no-one could argue that he is at the moment. And it is very unlikely he will be for at least another 2-3 years (he has just turned 21 after all). Yet Freo have locked him in on a long term contract on serious coin. How are they going to go renegotiating Darcy's contract? Or Frederick's? How are they going to go next trading period bringing in a star with so much of their cap tied up with Jackson? Freo are paying Jackson more that we are paying for Grundy. It's pretty clear in my mind who will be represent better value for money in the next 2-3 years - and it ain't the unicorn messiah! D+? Sheesh.

  14. Nibbler has a good football brain and would be well suited to this role. He keeps on reminding the other players to keep their mind on the job and stop the premature celebrations and to get back to their positions for the next forward entry. I was a little skeptical at first, but I think he can play as long as he can get a bit of guidance and I think it will be a contest between him and BBB, who is really a week-to-week proposition. We came back too early last year and by the finals a lot of the players were stuffed, and the side was riddled with injuries. I think the Jackson affair was a distraction as well and I'm expecting a much better year in 2023,

  15. I apparently signed up early 2006. My god that’s a long time ago. My username was referring to the great Travis Johnstone. At the time Travis was my favorite player and was the most exciting demon going round. He had just had a few great years where he lead the league for inside 50s and score assists. His kicking was sublime and he was impacting games in a way I hadn’t seen before. I loved watching him stream down the wing of the G and blast laser passes through Neitz’s chest. He also stood up in big games, and was always amongst our best in finals matches. After decades of failure and no superstars, it felt like we finally had a superstar midfielder on our hands. History shows he didn’t reach those superstar heights we’d dreamed of, and it would take another 15 years until we had our superstar midfielders in Oliver and Petracca. I still love Travis though and feel he’s underrated by demon fans and football public in general. As for me, much like Travis’ form, my mood and posting is very up and down!

Also really enjoyed your time on the podcast in its infant phase. I'm very much the same though, I've been part of Demonland/Ology a very long time but I would have only met a handful of people in person. It's a different kind of connection but nonetheless a very meaningful one with everyone on here.

  19. Ah the reverse jinx, works every time! Great win, especially considering the outs. Didn't miss a beat really. 15/21 who played in the GF earlier this year. How good is Purcell? I reckon even those who recruited her over wouldn't have expected such an output. Special mention to Mithen and Heath who upped the ante in others' absence. Same for Caris who came in with the right attitude for her opportunity (5 tackles) and will find game time one way or another next season. Staying on the tackles, West (11), Hanks (8) and Lampard (7) were great in that regard and certainly weren't alone. Mackin - she kicked a pretty special goal with her first kick on debut (that's debut in footy, not just the club!) in the practice game at the G against Carlton and she was so close again, her feet just got a bit ahead of her. Exciting stuff. Speaking of exciting, Zanker out of the ruck should have been a GOTY contender, but I guess I'm pretty biased. Overall, our field kicking was perhaps the best I've ever seen by us and potentially in the league - kicking to space, kicking to advantage, kicking to pinpoint, and being able to switch up between options. Excellent vibe around Daisy's 50th, only wish it could have been at home. We should look back at the day she was drafted to Melbourne as a very important one in our club history. She could have been a Bulldog and quite seriously, I think our team would be on a different trajectory - her fingerprints are all over our culture. This video captures the love and respect going both ways between captain and teammates (and gives a glimpse of what's going on under Paxman's bandage, yikes):

"The Demons’ first-round selection at No.19 in last year’s national draft, van Rooyen is yet to make his senior debut but had an impressive first year in the VFL, kicking 36 goals. 22. Mockingly (probably unintentionally because I doubt he thought about how it would look) in a Dockers jumper. Could have posted any number of photos of him with the Premiership cup when he thanked the club with his one line. I thank him for his time but do not wish him well. He is now the enemy and whilst I will not boo him I do hope he gets roughed up a bit and that he earns every dollar he gets.

  24. Schache didn't kick 45 last year in the 2s. He only kicked 31 goals. The website I got this information from (and likely you too) had some matches from 2021 listed too and when added up equalled the 45 you had. In any event see below for a comparison between Schache and Brown & Weid's season in the 2s. Sam Weideman played 11 games and kicked 15 goals 17 for Casey. He spent a lot of time in the ruck late in the season. Mitch Brown played 16 games and kicked 38 goals 24 behinds for Casey. Josh Schache played 12 games and kicked 31 goals 10 behinds for Footscray Reserves Weid only took 58 marks from his 11 games, Brown took 106 marks from his 16 games and Schache took 74 from his 12 games.

  25. I'm a big wrap for Phoenix Foster of Norwood in the SANFL if we're looking towards key forward. I rate him more highly then Keeler and Jefferson. He's got the physical attributes and frame to becoming a pretty solid key forward in the same mould as a Nick Larkey or Mitch Lewis. He's also quite athletic in terms of his ability to chop out in the ruck as per his impressive performance against the Allies when Harry Barnett was a late withdrawal. He controlled the ruck and stoppages really well. Recruiters would have been impressed knowing he's added another string to his bow. He's one I'm absolutely hoping we take in the 30's.

  26. These things are probably click bait at best. Funnily Cornes said we were second behind Geelong. If you analyse it, you would say Grundy is a better player than LJ atm, Hunter is better than anyone we lost and we got him for a steal, Schache who is bigger and more versatile than Weid, cost nothing and replaces Weid, who got us 37. We also added 2 first round picks. Not sure how that ends in a D+, but then again, who cares?

  29. MELBOURNE Draft picks: 13, 37 List needs: Key forward, key defender Who could be available at first pick: Matthew Jefferson, Mattaes Phillipou, Jedd Busslinger, Lewis Hayes Who’s in the mix after that: Charlie Clarke, Harvey Gallagher, Jed Hagan, Blake Drury With Sam Weideman’s departure to Essendon during the trade period, the Demons went after Western Bulldogs swingman Josh Schache as a back-up key forward. That spot still looks a weakness on their list but there look like being few options on the table at pick 13 unless Victorian key forward Matthew Jefferson slips outside the top-10. South Australian Mattaes Phillipou is also more likely to be a top-10 pick, but would appeal as a goalkicking midfielder. Alternatively, a young key defender could be targeted for life beyond Jake Lever and Steven May. West Australian Jedd Busslinger and Victorian Lewis Hayes are both exciting prospects in that department. Latest word: The Demons are targeting what shapes as a potential ‘Super Draft’ in 2023, already holding two first-round selections and two second-round selections in that draft.

Shane has left such an indelible memory on MFC supporters that we already had a strong desire for his son to succeed at MFC. So the club needs to give Taj every opportunity to get him to where we need him to be a 200 game AFL player. Comeon Taj help us make it up to Shane.!!!

When I first started on all these boards I was a very young teen who was very into the Hip-hop group Bone Tungs N Harmony and my name is in reference to Layzie Bone one of the members of the group! I thought about changing it many times over the years but never bothered and now it's at the point where I can't change it, despite the fact that I very rarely listen to Bone Thugs these days it would feel like changing my real name! I don't even particularly like it at times and even think it's silly but it's been so long it feels like being born with it and you just have to embrace it!

We’re all Demons and my opinion, all fundamentally on the same side at heart. Moderating the forum was a hard and busy job in the early days, @Rhino Richards was one of the few that had the stomach for it. I am personally thankful he was around and I wish he’d pop his head in from time to time. I hope both those guys enjoyed the flag.

  37. My old man was with the club (not as a player) in the early 60s (so I have been there in person for one flag!), and I had 31 on my jumper of course. After RDB went to Carlton I didn't know what number to get. Hassa Mann and Tassie Johnson were the next captains, but I had met Frank Davis at the club (played on the half back flank in the 64 premiership), and he was always willing to have chat and a kick at the end of training. So number 6 it was (he was number 40 early in his career), and thus my username. Great topic!

  39. We don’t really need anything from the draft even if there’s some positions that would be nice to fill. Key forward, a lockdown back pocket and some mid/forward class are the 3 positions that might be the shakiest in the best 22, but there are some potential answers on the list as well as future trade options. But on the other hand ideally Gawn and May could do with young replacements developing even if that’s our strongest positions. The most inside of inside mids in Viney would be our last need but if we drafted a kid now in 3 years time that spot probably opens up. Bowey/Laurie were reported as needs and the list did need that balance (even if results are 50/50). Same with JVR and the importance of a key forward. Good choices to fill gaps at the time. But the absolute last thing the Tigers needed when they drafted Shai Bolton was a small forward. Now he’s a major reason why they’re topping up rather than rebuilding. The best possible player should be the focus of the first 2 rounds of the draft, use late picks to look for needs.

  41. I don’t get this. If you make a change to allow lopsided trades you have to expect them to happen. Similarly it’s unfair on the player getting traded to ban them from being able to extend their contact. That goes against their free will to negotiate. This is only an issue because gold coast put such a great pick with Bowes. If they offered up pick 20 he’d be at Essendon or Hawthorn and no one would be worried I’d propose 2 changes 1. Limit the amount any one player can be backloaded to stop players becoming expendable dumps to begin with. I’d say 20% loading at most 2. Sort the gold coast suns out and just ban them from being stupid

  42. I think SS would be a good addition to our Club. His attitude and behavioural issues have been brought up as a potential problem. I believe that if he comes to us, these issues wouldn’t be a thing. How so? Two words: Brendan McCartney. Having had the honour of meeting BMc at an event a couple of months ago, I don’t think there’s a player in the entire league that he couldn’t put and then keep on the straight and narrow, so to speak. I told him how well-mannered and mature all the boys whom I had met that morning were. He barked rather than spoke his reply, “You know the ‘No D***head Policy’? Yeah well that still applies now as much as it ever has!!!” He has a gruff way about him which is at first a little unsettling. He is a “tough love” kind of person. He went on to tell me about some things that needed to be, and were changed upon his arrival at the MFC, which resulted in our current standards of player behaviour. I reckon that he is a large part of the reason our players are not in the headlines for all the wrong (off-field) reasons. I walked away from him in awe. And a little frightened. 😁
