A shout out to all those brave souls that listen to, and summarise, AFL Trade Radio so that we don't have to. Personally, I gave it a go, but couldn't take the pain.11 points

i'll put my hand up. Heard it from a sports journalist who heard it from a player. A reliable source but have no more info.9 points

Some random thoughts about this situation, now that the initial shock has subsided. The focus on Clarkson and Fagan is unfortunate as it obscures the real issues - cultural safety and systemic racism As an example of cultural safety, Hodge seemed to suggest getting advice from the club about cutting ties to girlfriends and or perceived bad influences was standard operating procedure when he came to the club. Some might say that is evidence of it not being racist to do the same for Aboriginal players, but that ignores the completely different cultural context for Aboriginal and non Aboriginal players and the inter generational trauma Aboriginal people experience as result of colonialization, genocide (ie efforts to wipe out Aboriginal people), forced removal from their land and forced separation of family (and any number of other issues, such as systemic poverty) Bottom line, it hard to imagine a scenario where having ANY conversation with an Aboriginal player that is any way suggesting disconnecting from family would be culturally appropriate and safe (which, to be clear, is not to say that welfare concerns cannot be addressed with Aboriginal players - they just have be done in a culturally safe way) The Crows camp fiasco is another example of what happens when there is a complete lack of cultural competence This thread is a good example of the broader discussion on this topic - the focus on Clarkson and Fagan has meant the discussion has mostly been about the specific 'accusations' leveled against them, and the fairness or otherwise of how those accusations were leveled and concepts such as right of reply and natural justice The focus on Clarkson and Fagan is understandable as it is newsworthy and has implications for the AFL - it is the reason the ABC report highlighted their involvement But as i say, the focus on them obscures the real issue - cultural safety and systemic racism Was the focus on Clarkson and Fagan by the ABC fair? No, not really - but it is standard media stuff, as was releasing it in GF week for maximum impact (and thanks to 15 plus years of having to battle and scrape to justify its existence, ABC have just as much pressure on them as any media outlet to generate clicks) The report and the ABC reporting have been conflated - as has been noted by several posters the TOR of the report was to interview Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island hawks players about their experience at the club and document the feedback The Hawks have obviously read the report and determined an investigation is required and wisely handballed it to the AFL The ABC article was, as i understand it, was not a rehash of the leaked report - there is no evidence the report was leaked The ABC interviewed players and families themselves - and given we are talking about small pool of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Island hawks players in the timeframe of the report there was always going to be a cross over One assumes the ABC did all the legal checks and approvals before publishing; and if so it is hard to see what recourse Clarkson and Pagan have in terms of potential defamation claims (the ABC were reporting information they believed to be correct, which as i understand it is a good start to a defamation defense) I can't see how the Hawks or individual players could be exposed to defamation, given neither party publicized the accusations (the players spoke to a reporter, but the ABC reported and published those comments)8 points

No good belittling Geelong or whingeing about the draw. G haven't lost since May and were spectacular on Saturday. They also behaved and performed in a level-headed and business-like manner throughout the year...unlike us. Far too much self-love and self- satisfaction in the Melbourne cohort. And lack of both on and off field discipline. The May/Melksham incident was atrocious. Add in timid team selection and rigid, unimaginative tactics and its not hard to see why we fell short. Did well to finish second, but exposed in the finals.8 points

My Pies tragic mate tells me at the GF that he wants De Goey out and will be shattered if Grundy leaves. He says Dees will be the clear winners if we get Grundy. Superior tap ruckman to max and far better below his knees. he says he's really a giant on-baller.. And would be a huge point of differenec for the Dees, and Max gets needed help. And allows Max around the ground which he excells at, Just saying from a Pies fan who knows his team well.7 points

Interesting from The Age: "Collingwood do not have to trade Grundy out to make salary cap room for the players they have targeted this trade period in McStay, Bobby Hill from the Giants and Billy Frampton from Adelaide. The option of trading Grundy is about creating salary cap space for other potential moves such as Tom Mitchell from Hawthorn. Mitchell would only be an option if Grundy left Collingwood. Hawthorn would be prepared to pay a significant portion of Mitchell’s salary and would not require a significant draft pick in exchange". Mitchell is the same age as Grundy and probably on similar dollars with less years on the contract and is a Brownlow medalist, 2 X AA, 3 X BF, MVP but will not attract a significant draft pick. So why is everyone , in partitcular the media talking a good 1st round pick + for Grundy!!!!!!!!7 points

So there's us allowing Tomlinson to seek a trade to the Bulldogs, whilst still under contract. There's how the feck do Fremantle satisfy our demands of two first rounders? Henry's seen on Clarry's instagram stories. Would all parties be satisfied with the following: Bulldogs give up Naughton. Bulldogs receive Lobb, a top 10 pick (via Melbourne) and Tomlinson. Melbourne gives up Jackson, Tomlinson & a top 10 pick. Melbourne receives Henry and Naughton. Fremantle gives up Lobb, Henry & a top 10 pick. Fremantle receives Jackson. Crazier things have happened. We then give up our future first rounder (hopefully end of first round) for Grundy. Grundy, Naughton and Henry would be a huge off season and change the face of our forward half.7 points

Averaged 0.82 tackles a game this year. That ranked him 555th out of 571 players this year for tackling. Of those who averaged fewer tackles, he's the only one to have played more than 6 games and be under 190cm. The only semi-regular non-key position/ruck that tackled less than him was noted defensive hard man, Riley Bonner. I reckon that's got a fair bit to do with his non-selection in the second half of the year.7 points

No way this happens or is happening. Media has had no whiff of this and if there was any sniff of a player like Naughton wanting out the hounds would be salivating. I’m calling BS.6 points

Hey, just checking, we're only running this thread to see if Tom Browne starts reporting it, right? If so, mods delete this post and let's play on.6 points

Sucked in on day 1 of trade radio and heard the genius Brenton Sanderson give his take on how Grundy gets to us and Jackson to Freo. Pick 13 from Freo to Melbourne for Jackson Ontrade pick 13 to Collingwood for Grundy. And… he suggested pies may need something more from us, like second rounder or a player eg: Weids!!! to cap off his work, he says he can’t see how Grundy improves Melbourne. FFS5 points

He has very uneven shoulder heights. Makes me nervous about future injury. I think he’d slot in at CHB and allow Petty to go forward. Tomlinson and a future 2nd probably gets it done?5 points

Late 1st for Grundy at $700k/year is probably fair value but we have some leverage because they "must" do it and we "want" to do it. FA for McStay closes before the trade period so that puts a little time pressure on too, particularly with Brisbane also wanting an outcome for their Dunkley trade. We should be able to do a bit better than fair value. The trade may need to get done before the Jackson deal is closed and then it would have to be F1st with something coming back, or best case 32.5 points

I think we all know that you’ve got to have a combination of things go your way to have the ideal preparation. Collingwood kick one more goal in that first final and the sky would have fallen in on Geelong. Everyone would be saying their draw was too soft and it hurt them. This year taught me that there’s the plan, and then there’s this weeks version of the plan. It’s easy in hindsight to say anything was ideal when it won you the premiership. I think that thinking may have hurt us the most this year. You need a plan, luck, adaptability, and courage. Probably in that order. I think we only had the first and last of those in 2022.5 points

And please AFL, can our players have a 'real' mid season bye in 2023 to properly rest and recover. Not the 10 day break we had after Queens Birthday. It was just silly fixturing to play on a Thursday night.5 points

fwiw, from the sun: Melbourne says it wants two first-rounders and a second-rounder or two picks within 10 (including one within the first seven picks) for Jackson. https://www.heraldsun.com.au/sport/afl/moneyball-afl-trades-all-the-latest-news-and-whispers-on-potential-2022-player-movement/news-story/1855f1401433f17306a756a3e7f5405a first time i've seen it said what we are chasing for dog5 points

The ol' special and different trope. What a lot of cr*p. This attitude, at least in part, is the root cause of the problem.4 points

Brent Sanderson opined today that - ➡️ Luke Jackson to Fremantle for Pick 13 ➡️ Collingwood recieves Pick 13 for Brodie Grundy ➡️ Collingwood pay $300,000 of Grundy's remaining salary This values a 20/1 year old ready made ruckman originally drafted at pick #3 with a Rising Star and a Premiership behind him at a downgrade of 10 picks from top 3 to pick 13. Tell them they’re dreaming.4 points

Sorry, I would’ve included a sarcasm warning if anyone actually thought this was a serious thread. But I’ve up my offer to Tomlinson, a future 2nd, Baker, we’ll take Bruce, Hunter and Stef Martin from them and we’ll donate 10k more followers to Bailey Smith’s Instagram account. I’m open to agreeing not to sing Free From Desire if they’ll chuck in a future 3rd back.4 points

Franky Evans kicked 30 goals in the VFL for the cats this year. Won’t be replacing Stengle, Miers or Close any time soon and Ollie Henry potentially coming in as a mid sized forward too. If we want to replace one of Spargo or ANB with a small forward with a touch more size who in theory can be more of a marking target/crumber and kick more goals he fits the bill. I think he’d be a nice option rather than another year or two of Bedford still not quite being up to it or giving us anything different to our first choice options. Kicked 5 against Casey which is more than some entire teams did! https://www.afl.com.au/video/795574/vfl-showreel-r16-francis-evans-highlights?videoId=795574&modal=true&type=video&publishFrom=16572867230014 points

The names weren't made public, but clearly they won't be anonymous in the actual investigation. Already covered that. It's not a court at all. It's an independent investigation into an existing report. There have been no charges, no one has been fired, no one has been sued etc. Again, the names aren't public, but that has absolutely no effect on the investigation. They were all given the usual right of reply/comment by Russell Jackson and they chose not to take it. Are you sure? But the "accused" said it was "anti-inflammatories" and surely you have to consider both sides of the story?4 points

One of the things that has been overlooked by the experts is that Shannon Byrne returned to the Cats after 8 years with us, he knew our game plan intimately. He attended all Training sessions and was the person who passed all the messages and changes to the team during play. If you watch “Sound The Alarm” Goody spoke with him more than anyone else during the Granny. He had a lot of knowledge and in- house intelligence on us.!!!!4 points

I was not referring to finals. We were 10-0 and had West Coast and North back to back. We had ample opportunities to rest players who were not right. Lever kept hurting his foot. Salem was never right to return. Gawn rushed back. We absolutely could have rucked Jackson and Weideman for 5-6 weeks and given Gawn a proper rest. We could have debuted JVR and given Brown a month off leading into finals. We took risks that in hindsight cost us dearly.3 points
