I will tell you what I am really angry about, playing the Cats at Geelong, 28 times in the last 30 years, while Carlton, Essendon, Richmond, Collingwood and probably Hawthorn, haven’t seen the place. I won’t even touch on the fact that Cats played Roos and Eagles twice this year and finished the season hardly leaving their home ground. I agree with Jaded No More, if Dees weren’t around, I wouldn’t watch footy anymore. It’s so far off a level playing field it’s not sport anymore, just another business, with all the dirty things that go with big business.14 points

In fairness there have been some really questionable decisions around the management of certain players this yead Both Salem and Rivers started the year off with bandages around their knees and were very poppy and have been since. They were CLEARLY not 100% fit and that's where I question if it was necessary they had to play so early and quickly from their knee injuries when best caution of practice would be too take as much time as possible. I look at the way they managed Hibberd and thought that was done far more professionally and his recent form bar Collingwood showed that he hasn't looked out of touch at all. Even the recent James Jordon knee injury. Since he hurt his knee he's running around and has a turning circle of a Ben Brown. He's lost his speed and power as of a result of this and it's costing us big time because he's awareness and slow movement kills our transition chains. The decision to continue to play Jordon when he's clearly not fit with that knee really is puzzling. There's fit blokes at Casey that can come in or even better, we move Brayshaw to a wing and get Bowey in.13 points

Drills seemed to be focusing on, shimmy, quick direction changes and handballing. Match sims (opponents being the coaches), was about backline structure and working the intercept, then using short kicks to spread, create overlap and to get the ball deep to the forwards. I thought Jackson will be used more as a forward given the line squads. Forwards working on getting front and centre. Good atmosphere, felt like plenty of seriousness mixed with joviality. Their voice was loud and determined. BBB didn't have strapping on and did not participate in the long runs. He practiced plenty of goal kicking with supervision. An old coach, Macca visited them, long talks with Goody and a few of the players were happy to see him. The informal goal kicking had too many trying the miracle kick, (inside out banana) from the boundary. I guess they had 'fun'.13 points

Me too. i reckon we need to really think about using Harmes in the tagging role for the rest of the year. the interesting thing is when he's tagging his output generally is very very similar to when he's not, so why not shut out a good player?11 points

At the start of the session the players gathered in a circle in the centre , and clapped and cheered someone. They often do this when a debut is announced. Perhaps it was Laurie. It wasn't Van R.10 points

Any chance Luke Jackson can produce a game tomorrow night befitting of his reputation and projected contract next year and beyond? Lately, there's been a ton of 3 and 4 out of 10 games coming from the big number 6.10 points

That's how our year has gone Daz. We should be on top having beaten Swans, Dogs and Pies and not giving a rat's about Cripps and the Blues. Our kicking for goals has been a disgrace and that is why we are where we are. I have one question, why did the Tribunal Chairman Jeff Gleeson, an extremely experienced and competent Sports advocate, say that Cripps was contesting not bumping? As I said in an earlier post, this stinks to high heaven, as it has led to the successful appeal. Why did he say that? If he said it was a bump, it was all over. I said I smelt a rat. The AFL can now say we tried to protect the head, we suspended him, the Tribunal agreed, but the Appeals Board saw it differently. The star plays, the crowds come, the media salivates and the Brownlow has another live runner. IMO Gil can't leave quick enough.10 points

Its pretty long bow to be accusing the fitness team (and by extension the club) of being reckless, particularly given i'm assuming - and i stand to be corrected - that you don't have inside knowledge of their program or specific expertise in sport science.9 points

Naughton is a star and would suit our system perfectly. I hope it's more than a mere pipe dream.9 points

It’s not his fault he got off. He shouldn’t be booed, he and his team should just be well beaten.9 points

now I’m about to boil over this is absolutely a wrong decision, and smells of a biased decision this is the facts Tribunal chairman Jeff Gleeson said the incident fell into the "bumping of an opponent" category and it was not a reasonable way to contest the ball. "He entered the contest at speed and saw a player in his peripheral vision, left his feet and bumped Ah Chee at high speed," Gleeson said. "He should have contested the ball differently. He could have taken the ball with his arms outstretched so there was no act of bumping at all." Cripps had options. Fact. Cripps chose to bump. Fact. Cripps jumped off his feet. Fact. Cripps hit AH Chee in the head. Fact. Ah Chee was concussed. Fact. Careless. Head high. High impact. 3 weeks minimum. This is the worst decision since … since … it’s probably the worst decision ever.9 points

I popped in to the training session today. First time ever ! It was beaut to meet some D'landers ... As others have said, the general vibe (on and off the oval) was very relaxed. Go Dees !!!8 points

Difference is we are coming off a season that lasted an extra month and players played through more in finals because that’s what you do. When I went and saw Rivers and Salem hobbling in Round 1 I knew it was nonsense. There is resilience and there is reckless.8 points

Irrespective of whether or not we make a play for Grundy, I think people need to put aside the notion that we are going to be in a position to get a ready-made KPF during this off season. There are no KPFs who are coming out of contract at the end of this year that would be worth making a play for. Our only option would be to use any first round picks we receive from the Jackson trade to try and draft Aaron Cadman. Obviously I am all for that and I actually think that will be our aim, but like any key position player he will take a few years to develop and I don't think he would make an immediate impact next year. I've also seen some people say that we should save our cap room and trade forward our picks to try and lure a KPF like McKay or Curnow for the following year. As much as I'd love to snag one of them - or any of the other up and coming KPFs like Naughton and the King brothers - we can't bank on players deciding to leave their clubs, especially because those clubs are going to put a premium on retaining them. That's not to say that it won't happen - for all we know there could be discussions going on behind the scenes that the media isn't privy to - but to bank on that without trying to improve our list in other areas would be poor list management. At the end of the day, I have full faith in Tim Lamb, JT and Alan Richardson to make the right call on any trade or draftee. If we are looking at Grundy, its because we genuinely believe he would make our list better and that he wouldn't risk our ability to recruit a KPF. In other words, if we end up recruiting Grundy, it won't be because we didn't identify a KPF as our #1 need - it will be because we did so but didn't have any viable options to fill that position in the short to medium term. I actually think we could be in a position to recruit Grundy AND a tall from the draft. If the Pies are desperate to offload him and Grundy nominates us as his club of choice, there is no way we're giving up any of the first round picks we get for Jackson for him. If we're only giving up picks from the second round or later, we could potentially be in a position where we would still have one or two first round picks that we could use to either trade higher up the draft and get Aaron Cadman, or draft one of the taller prospects from the middle-end of the first round. All hypothetical, but it could end up being a very productive off season for us.8 points

Spot on. Let's face, this isn't sport anymore this is entertainment. Look after the big clubs. Look after the big stars. Create the blockbusters. Create the drama. Create an over the top ridiculous match day experience. Flexible rules at the tribunal so they can always get the result they want. Flexible rules and interpretations on the field. I truly believe umps are consciously or unconsciously evening games up to keep them close and viewers tuned in. It's not so much the free kick count but where they are paid. We saw it last week and we see it all the time where a big team that's behind gets a couple of softies in front of goal when it looks like they games slipping away from them. The AFL is corrupt. Nice legacy Gil. it's not about the fans or the welfare of the players. It's not about looking after the integrity of the most wonderful sport in the world in my opinion. It's about $ and TV. If it wasn't for my addiction to this club, I'd be just watching the occasional game of local footy. That's entertainment. Go Dees, deeestroy them.8 points

My completely untrained eye suggests that May might have a back problem. He seems not to have the flexibility to bend over comfortably which results in him fumbling when he tries to pick up a ground ball.7 points

My gut feel is the coaches really want to settle the team down and minimize changes, trusting that the pre-finals bye and modified training will be enough to get guys up and going for finals. I don't think you want to be making too many unforced changes at this time of year7 points

All reasonable points. It is clear burgess had a particular philosophy about playing through injury and not resting players, and it would appear that Griffith has the same philosophy. Under Burgess lots of players played though niggles and soreness - maxy being an obvious one. From memory in that Burgo-Brucky podcast he speaks on this very topic and why he thinks it was factor in our success. I find it hard to assess that philosophy, but see what you are saying, particularly in regard to playing players who are hampered when there are players who appear less so at Casey - though presumably that is more Goody's call than Griffiths, who would just tick of, in collaboration with the medical staff, that a particular player is good to go. That said i have total confidence that no player's welfare is being put at risk (not suggesting you are saying it is). And i reckon Burgess and Griffith could both point to the remarkably low number of soft tissue injuries we have had in the last 3 seasons as indication the program is effective. How many have we had this year?7 points

Again, there is no veteran discount. We would pay him $650k in your scenario until 2027. That currently is just under 5% of the cap of $13.5m. A gamble we don’t need to take.7 points

Kozzie heavy strapping, and limping. Laurie running with forwards. BBB not doing much at all, not running in drills.7 points

Cripps will play, so what, his head is going to be so full of the tribunal action he will be pretty much useless. IMO. and if we cannot beat them then we cannot beat time with a stick and we can forget this year. But if Harmes is the sub and we need fresh legs in the last quarter FFS will someone start limping. Go Dees see you saturday7 points

The way the afl is run it would be long gone without the irrational and emotional allegiance of the fans to their clubs. They are really just taking advantage of us and walking away with their pockets lined. I’d love to not support this corrupt organisation but I’m deeply brainwashed and I will be buried with a Melbourne jumper which makes things complicated.7 points

The two ruck model works if one has genuine forward craft. Why pay someone big dollars not not play to their strengths? Sure they can train forward but it's a lot of moving heaven and earth for a potential bad fit.7 points

Hear, hear. It's a sporting tribunal. Courts of law go over definitions to hair splitting detail because a guilty decision can be very very serious. Career prospects, house home & family, earning capabilities ... big bickie stuff. Here we're dealing with whether a footballer will miss a game of football or not. It's farcical that a QC is permitted to speak for an hour and a half, befuddling the tribunal -- including a beak -- as to which way is up. What is a bump? What is football even? What is "is"? And the tribunal members, bless their little cotton socks, bought into the paradigm and embraced it. It was a travesty and a farce.6 points

McLean is a tall forward, not a ruck. Since he was dropped back to Sydney's VFL team he's amassed 23 hitouts in 8 games - that's fewer than 3 per game. He's been decent up forward in the VFL, with 18 goals from 8 games. Weideman has kicked 14 goals in 6 games and JVR has kicked 28 in 13 games. My point here is that we need to evaluate these players properly. We tend to look at other teams' players and imagine their very best once they join the Dees. There's a lot of overrating of opposition players that goes on just because we don't see very much of them.6 points

I actually really like Cripps and he is a good and fair player. The outrage from me has nothing to do with him specifically, or the fact that we play Carlton this week. My outrage is how the AFL continues to find new ways to show fans what a bias, corrupt, unprofessional joke of an organisation they have become, where the rich get richer and the poor can go to hell.6 points

No. Doesn’t really mention specific suitors. More just says port want to lock him away and he appears to be happy in SA. He’s one I think we should be looking at. We were keen at the draft I believe.6 points

This outcome takes me back to Chandler, whose only real fault on that night was not being a Cripps :-(6 points

In the long run is beating a Patrick Cripps less Carlton going do us any favours in September? Basically all the marquee players will be there in September from all opposition, so you need to get used to competing against the best. In addition, I'm so over Collingwood so more than happy for Cripps to play and potentially put his club on his back and beat the Pies.6 points

I think Hayden McLean is the one we should be looking at from Sydney. 197cm ruck/forward who has kicked quite a few goals in the VFL and can't get a look in at Sydney. Only 23 so has plenty of upside in his game.6 points

For what it is worth. Last week I presume a lot of people kept away from the footy because of the rain that was forecast. It didn’t rain at all during the game. BOM in its hourly projections said it was going to rain (The icon symbols can be misinterpreted and therefore be misleading- the way I read it, if there is even a small chance of showers it will show up a ‘rain icon’ , if that makes sense). The app I used (Windy) draws on BOM data but interprets it differently- in my mind more realistically! It said the showers would be gone by 7pm and that is what happened. Right now BOM says it should be raining where I live- and it isn’t and it hasn’t been! It indicates (the hourly forecast) for Richmond for showers right now , all day and through to tomorrow night and through to Sunday!. My guess is that this is unlikely, sure there will be some showers but not all the time (therefore is somewhat misleading). My app says there will be some showers this arvo and more importantly showers tomorrow from about 4 to 7pm and then dry. Obviously the forecast will change between now and then. Why the long dribble you may ask? In short , BIG game tomorrow night, we need to OUTNUMBER Carlton supporters and show LOUD support for our boys. Surely the Cripps decision is incentive to turn up. I would urge you to spur some of your fair weathered friends to turn up. And if there happens to be some showers tomorrow night, keep in mind it is only falling water. Also, keep in mind that no matter how loud you barrack at home, the boys can’t hear you. As always, not having a go at the elderly, Covid concerned, distance issued supporters. One last thing. For those of us that turn up tomorrow night, just remember that you are not going to the opera, you are going to the footy- make some bloody noise!6 points

I don't think so. They've played against each other twice in real games. Round 2 2020 - Gawn 2 Brownlow votes, 21 disposals, 34 hitouts v Pittonet 14 disposals 23 hitouts. Next game was the last time we played them - Round 9 2021 - Gawn 15 disposals, 44 hitouts v Pittonet 9 disposals, 23 hitouts and a goal.6 points

Ah Chee misses a week, under concussion protocols and Cripps has his ban overturned. Makes sense? Even if Carlton were playing someone else tomorrow night, I would still say this is an appalling decision and sets a terrible precedent. As a side note, I remember we played Carlton at the 'G years ago - it might have been Cripps first year. He received a love tap from, I think Hogan. Carlton claimed Cripps suffered a hairline fracture of the jaw. Hogan got a week and Cripps played the following week.5 points

No point booing Cripps. That’s silly, he’s done nothing unwarranted to our club or players. I do hope he has a stinker and we belt them though. The tears of the Blues fans missing finals would be sweet.5 points

The whole point of my post is that Cripps' "intention" is not the issue. That wasn't in the charge. FWIW, for similar reasons Hawkins should have been suspended for "carelessly" breaking May's jaw. But there's one rule for stars and another for ANB and Chandler.5 points

I've always admired the MFC's insistence on having a home base in the Melbourne precinct. This is unfortunately easier said than done due to the lack of opportunities in the area but I like that we haven't given up on it. The Dingley facility may be incredible for the Hawks but for me there's always been a tinge of sadness that it is miles away from their true precinct and spiritual home.5 points

If this was a Melbourne player we would be livid that he was suspended. I don't care if he's playing Saturday we should still belt them. If not then we simply aren't up to it.5 points

So the trick is to keep appealing until you get the desired result? Had this been one of ours we would have just accepted the verdict. Different rules for star players at big clubs....Farcical.5 points

Neither Grundy or Gawn is worth their place as a KPF for 80% match time while the other is rucking. What we need is for LJ is a first round draft pick to get a 196+ forward with a wide frame so that he can add kgs and strength.5 points

I agree with this. I've been p*ssed off with the game of AFL for years and have several times stated that the only reason I continue to follow is because of my irrational attachment to the MFC. I don't even like watching a lot of game, sometimes even when we're in them, because of ll the throwing, umpires choosing which subset of rules they'll apply each week, etc etc. Of course our magnificent flag has rejuvenated my enthusiasm. But let's face it, overall, the game is [censored]ed.5 points
