  2. So Daisy has been accepted into the Women’s Coaching Academy - The only one of the seven selected who is an active player and not a current coach or assistant coach. I am a total fan of her as a commentator; I think she is by far the best analyst of them all. Let’s hope she can end up as a coach, perhaps even the senior coach of our men’s team in due course? Or at the very least, as a strategist/analyst.

  5. Outstanding Year. Got better the further the season progressed. Bayley is clever. He is not a huge pack mark, but he will fly in a pack. but what he does is keep his feet, so he can make a second effort. he is also very good at making space. as an opponent he would be a nightmare. He just might kick a 100 in a Season 6 in a GF is a great base to work from

  6. Guys, I'm filing this news story from the frontlines of the war zone. There's a ceasefire in place at the moment, but the stereo could start up again any minute now. Tensions are high. As a former demon, Mitch Hannan was the player who negotiated the peace treaty that prevented all-out war. They're calling it the Treaty of Northbridge. But I've noticed several MFC players going back to the ATM, and I think we might be bribing our way into another nightclub. Will try to report more later if it's not too dangerous.

  7. Loved the way she explained to that buffoon BT that the reason why Langdon had kicked the ball past Pickett to the next contest (in the 3rd qtr) was because it allowed the defence to roll up and intercept in a much better field position if the contest was lost. On cue the Dogs win the ball back and kick it to just back of the wing and May intercepts. No wonder BT is limited to "wow" "gee" comments. In one of the other commentaries (Carey I think) it is mentioned about how disciplined the Dees are in not kicking to the fat side where if they turn it over it is a much easier transition out for the opposition. Daisy has a great understanding of all this and is very good at explaining it.

  8. Can you imagine the convo with Jess jess “Max I need to know you are not naming our child after Clayton” Max “ oh, yeah, gee I hadn’t even thought of that. Just really like the name Oliver. It’s a top 10 name these days, so I am not alone” jess “ok, fair enough. Just as long as you promise me” Max conference call to the boys “boys, I got it approved. Junior Clarry her we come!”

  17. The game moves far more quickly and there's a lot more overlap running. It makes transition from defence a lot easier and teams are far more willing to take risks with the footy with more porous defensive ground coverage.

  19. The crafty medium sized forward was Melbourne’s leading goal kicker in a premiership season. He was dangerous throughout the finals and capped things off in an outstanding fashion with six goals in the Grand Final and was runner up to Christian Petracca for the Norm Smith Medal. 20. I swear you’re just deliberately ignoring the fact that we have majority vaccine coverage, which is the reason we’re not in lockdown this time around. Yes lockdown fatigue was a major issue, but ffs mate, your head is clearly shoved a mile up your [censored] if you still don’t understand that vaccination is clearly the main reason we’re out of lockdown.

  27. Also, here are the statistics to back that up. I'm comparing 2021 with 2019. The 2020 numbers would actually demonstrate even stronger trends, but I'm ignoring them because the 2020 statistics are skewed by the reduced game time due to COVID. Since the introduction of the rule: Clearances down 6.9%, hitouts down 12% (ie, fewer stoppages because of less congestion). Clangers up 3.8% (ie, more risks being taken with disposal rather than bombing defensively down the line). Contested possessions down 6.1%, tackles down 9.0%(!!!) and uncontested possession up 1.2% (ie, less congestion) Contested marks up 0.9% (ie, more one on one opportunities. Interestingly, the contested possessions were way down but the marks were slightly up, indicating fewer ground contests and an more even aerial contest). Marks inside 50 up 3.0% from 1.0% fewer inside 50s (ie, more space for forwards). Clearly this rule has helped to reduce congestion make the game faster. I think that represents a successful rule.

  28. his goal in the third quarter which started the win was a pressure goal. And who can forget the fly and flip goal. Thanks Bayley... saw you first at Casey and knew you were a special talent

  29. Improved his accuracy this year and 59 goals was pretty impressive for the player who often got the 3rd best defender. One of the reasons we had a successful year imo. Oppositions had to match up on Bbb and Tmac before The magnet. If maxxy or jacko went forward , he often got 4 defender.

  30. In a team which has a number of X factor players, he is an X factor player! There are some games where he can’t find the ball but to my eyes, he is always trying. And when he is in form, how can another team match up on him? Fantastic in the air, clean on the ground, a beautiful kick, fast and agile. An excellent player.

  31. I'd rather it stayed, for the simple reason that I think that the way the MFC play, we are able to take better advantage of it than other sides. When we go, we play on hard and use this rule to help break lines, but so many of our rivals just do the slow chip or long down the line over the man on the mark, because we force them into that and then they just turn the ball over to our defense, such that the rule is not of as much use to them. I don't care if it doesn't work for the rest of the comp.

  32. Having now watched the finals replays on numerous occasions, l think it is time we use our new found power in the AFL community to demand some changes in the leading commentary teams. The first to go must be BT. Not only is he so often factually wrong, but his understanding of basic tactics is so rudimentary as to be embarrassing. He is also quite open about his prejudice against the Dees. For instance: 1. l remember during the commentary for the game against Richmond on ANZAC eve last when we were leading by over fifty points, James Brayshow suggested that Melbourne should be now favourite for the flag. BT’s reaction, “l will never believe that until Max Gawn holds up the cup in September, no matter how successful they are during the season” 2. He has no understanding of basic team tactics eg. during the GF Langdon gathered the ball on the half back flank and raced up the the wing with Kossie racing with an opponent from the centre to get in position on the wing. Further up the field McDonald was racing towards the boundary line on the half forward flank with his opponent to give him an additional option. Langdon chose McDonald which prompted an outcry from BT saying he should have chosen Kossie (“l like Kossie” were l think his words). Several minutes later, Daisy Pearce, who was sharing the commentary with him and who has ten times his football sophistication, pointed out that he kicked it to half forward to lessen the risk of a turnover which could result in a goal to the bulldogs. Pretty basic football common sense but totally lost in his populist nonsense. 3 Angus Bradshaw: when the Dees were surging in the 3rd quarter of the Grannie, Brayshaw took an extremely courageous diving mark on the half forward flank about 45 metres out on a severe angle. If he goaled he would put us in front for the first time since early in the second quarter. He deliberately walked back slowly with his back to the play concentrating on what needed to be done to covert. BT went ballistic saying he needed to concentrate on the game. He clearly had no idea of Brayshaw’s history in poor accuracy in kicking for goal. In fact for much of the season he was having special tuition at training every week to improve his goal kicking at Choco’s skills academy and clearly was using that to ensure he nailed it. He did, which was a key part of our resurgence. The deliberate slow walk back was part of the process to ensure successful convergence. If BT had just basic football knowledge he would have known that. 4 Neal-Bullen marked 40 metres out in the last quarter when we were six or seven goals up. BT said he has to kick this so that the side will be able to enjoy the rest of the game, but if he doesn’t they won’t. This of course was totally nonsensical,. This can be bracketed with his ridiculous comment with five minutes to go saying “not a single person had left the ground”. How could he possibly know that?—- and it was said very dogmatically. I’m sure there are other examples that others could add to this list. We can do a lot better than BT. Time has passed both him and Eddie Maguire by. With much more sophisticated, and/or younger commentators (eg James Brayshaw, Daisy Pearce, Gerard Wheatley, Nick Riewoldt) providing much more nuanced commentary on a game which has become much more complex and subtle over the last 20 years, there is no long longer room for these dinosaurs. I propose we keep a record of all our examples of these incompetencies on Demonland, publicise them, and build a case for BT’s removal. We can do a lot better.

  35. Was in striking distance of Coleman . What a player...what a year. Unlikely build for a high scoring fwd but it works. Probably hard to find a defender for. Takes some high grabs for his height and uses every pound he has to push off opponents. Uncanny goal sense and the best hairdo in the comp. Thanks Fritta.

  36. It was Santa and the Easter Bunny, seconded by Aladdin and the Bunyip, brokered by the Fairy Godmother. Do young people know what cash even is any more? They do everything on their phones. Oh, but the article said cash, and the entire story is based on unimpeachable fact and doesn't in any way come across as being made up and embellished on the run. The only thing missing is that when they got up to level 3 they found Lassiter's gold in a cupboard.

  37. I admire Alex very much. His performance for the whole season was amazing. He is always hard at it and he can run all day like Ed thanks to his high level of fitness and sheer hard work on the training track. He has the ability to find space and is now feeding the forwards with pin point precision kicking. He is a real team man and has red and blue dyed in his blood.Always encouraging others and egging them on. So glad we kept him. Well done mate on a wonderful season.

  39. It somewhat worked in the first few rounds as the umpires actually gave players time to kick the footy. After a few weeks they went back to calling play two seconds after every mark, rushing the kicker.

  43. I think the whole way 7 use their broadcast team is poor. They need to get rid of all the blokey Crap and concentrate on calling the game. It seems like the broadcaster cannot have even a second of silence which generates hours of crap. Just let the the game play out on TV. Silence is golden sometimes.
