Remember it well and the day still hurts after all these years because it truly heralded the end of Melbourne’s great golden era. And it was all the more painful because we were 8-0 on Queen’s Birthday morning, 1965. The truth is that our team was growing older, we hadn’t recruited well for a couple of years and there were cracks in the ranks over the loss of our greatest ever player Ron Barassi who had switched to Carlton while Norm Smith and the committee weren’t seeing eye to eye over a legal issue. In short, the bubble burst and we even failed to make the finals (it was a final 4 in those days). My only criticism of the article by Age journo Percy Beams and a great Demon was his comment about the game being “watched and enjoyed by a crowd of 72,114.” I didn’t enjoy it and at least half of the crowd would not have enjoyed what was the beginning of the “Norm Smith curse”. The lesson is that you can never take anything for granted. Footnote for those who follow the American folk/rock music scene is that on the day after the game and the very day on which the Beams article was published, the great Bob Dylan went electric at the Newport Folk Festival and caused an uproar that had massive repercussions in the American music scene. As a fan of the folk scene at the time as well as the MFC, my entire world was turned upside down in the space of two days.18 points

Can’t think of a game outside of a final I have enjoyed winning more, that was just awesome. Pressure was unbelievable. Gut running unbelievable. Salem is a genuine Rolls Royce. Defence was just awesome. So glad we got it done for Chunk, he deserves to be carried off as a winner, a true Melbourne legend16 points

So.... have we beaten anyone good yet? Huge game. We were bullied, and we bullied back. Salem, Trac, Oliver, Max, Langdon,, Lever, TMac, Hunt, fantastic. But so many contributors. ANB some really nice things, big goal. The best part? The Tigers looked rattled, broken, scared, angry. We did that to them. Believe.14 points

For all of the doubters Luke Jackson is a player that will only get better and better, he is learning the forward craft that will make him a great player.13 points

I think that display trumps our 2018 finals wins in terms of the quality of opposition and quality of performance. Salem best on ground. Tomlinson rock solid down back, Lever excellent. May not his unusual dominating self but his presence alone gave confidence to our whole defensive set-up. Viney cracked in. Clayton struggled early but worked his way into it. Trac his usual excellent self. Maxy did his thing TMac fantastic. He is back to his 2018 best Nibbler very good. Sprags and Kozzie contributed. Fritsch kicked his 2 goals. Delighted Jonesy had a win on his 300th. Wasn’t overly involved but was serviceable. Only negatives were clearances and Melks. He shouldn’t play next week. The lid has been well and truly blown off and is currently orbiting the moon. Go Dees.12 points

What a team performance. Trent River diving spoil followed up by winning 1 on 2 vs Reiwoldt and Lynch got me up and about. Loved the scrap at the end as well.11 points

We’ve kick more goals in other quarters against other teams, but that is far and away our best quarter of the year. - we kept the reigning premiers goalless - our defence has been outstanding - we have matched and even bettered their pressure - Hibberd’s role on Martin has been sensational - Salem is BOG by a country mile11 points

I couldn’t be happier if this turns out to be true. I just don’t want us to be collateral damage on another fixture problem due to COVID and end up paying multiple games under a 4 day break.10 points

Huge game. Big stage at night and Jones 300th. The boys will be fired up so I am going to expect some early inaccuacy at goal. Hope its not for long. Our midfield was relatively quiet for the first three qrts last week. Wont happen again. The team will channel the spirit of Anzac today and get the job done. Dees by 31. Thank you to all the service men and women who have laid down their lives for the freedom we enjoy and those who currently protect this wonderful country of ours.10 points

I think Melksham doesn’t do enough to keep a 60 goal a year forward out of our side. We didn’t get Ben Brown to play for Casey. We need to make him work and next week is the perfect time. All that aside, that was an enormous win. A season defining win. To be challenged early and not only grind it out but dominate, was incredible. Our best players all played well on the big stage. But for me Jackson was a revelation. A 19 year old giant, wet ball, big stage, and he just did not miss a beat. Amazing game. A great night at the footy and a great night for Jonesy.9 points

That’s a bizarre reaction. To state the obvious, there’s very few players who can match up with Martin and no team in the comp would put a first gamer up against him. The suggestion is that Bowey may be good enough to perform a role at some point in the season. And we also wouldn’t be asking him to ruck a full game against Nic Nat. Spargo’s the preferred option there9 points

Happy to take them on anywhere, any time but first we have a big game tonight. Football’s all about one game at a time.9 points

So proud of TMac. This year could have been so different but he's taken this opportunity by the scruff of the neck. We all have, really.8 points

If we can play with the same pressure we brought against Geelong with a bit more accuracy in front of goal we'll go a long way towards winning this one. It should be a cracker tonight. Filled with genuine confidence.7 points

If you think this is THE important metric - it is helpful to think about the advantage he give to the team beyond his goal scoring or current lack thereof. He is 19 for gods sake.... 19, he is 19, nineteen years old. So, anyway he is 19, 19 years old and he is helping the team you love win games and are currently sitting 5-0, due to the way that he plays the game, spreads the opposition backmen, and also by the way he doesnt score goals. Did I mention we are 5-0 with a range of goal scorers who are coming in to play due to how he plays the game. If I think about it really hard - he is 19 and whilst he is 19 - he could have scored a minimum 5 more goals more, than he currently has, due to the fact that he is 19, and the fact that TMAC kicked a goal that was his last week in the goal square, and that Petracca kicked a goal the week prior (the first for the game) due to a sublime palm down in to his path.. and 3 more for good measure. So going on that rate - as a 19 year old - he would have 6 goals in 5 games... 6 goals for a 19 year old - so by the end of round 20 he would have 24. Does that change how he is seen? @leave it to deever - you're been far to harsh mate on a 19 yo7 points
