  1. Not sure if this has been posted already but found extended highlights on youtube. May want to listen with the volume lowered unless you like high energy techno music.

  2. They could all be handy if given the chance. The three ex-Gippsland Power graduates, Baldi, Sparkes and Hourigan, were all above average NAB League players and very good team players but probably lacked the X-factor to be drafted. Baldi is a pretty highly-credentialed junior rover who can play forward, wins a lot of the footy, cracks in, does everything pretty well, but probably just not penetrative at his size (he's probably 175cm) to be have been drafted to play midfield at AFL level and not tricky enough as a forward. A poor man's Caleb Serong. Sparkes is a wingman/flanker, neat with what he does with with the footy, but again for a wingman maybe deemed a tad vanilla. Doesn't do much wrong, but not a hugely impactful player, a get it in space and safely move it on-type player, not a gamebreaker enough for the most part. Hourigan is a third defender, similar in style and appearance to Tom Jonas but obviously not as good a player. He's pretty good but probably not athletic or big enough to shutdown good AFL forwards and doesn't compensate with enough rebounding punch to have been draftable. He can play forward a bit as well. Probably will compete for the roles Hutchins has been doing for Casey. Probably would fit best in a zoning back 6. Courtney is a ruckman who will probably be Bradtke's backup, depending on where Tom McDonald fits at Casey. Has unbridled athleticism, but his game is uncultured. His mobility lets him be used in other positions - A project player. Foot is a run and carry wingman/half forward. Probably has the most X-factor and game-breaking ability of the group, but obviously didn't do enough to stick with the Swans, a team who aren't super blessed with outside runners.

  3. As posted in the 2020 Draft thread, Laurie had plenty of interest from other clubs around the pick we used: https://www.afl.com.au/news/533681/bids-bluffs-and-frantic-calls-inside-2020-s-first-round-draft-frenzy And we rated Bowey ahead of him.

  4. I’ve been out of the loop due to the fact that I’m interstate. Thanks to the posters above who have covered the club’s new faces. With the exception of Foot, most of the new names are players who came to the club from the Under 18 NAB competition after the 2019 season. This year, that competition will become Under 19 so many players will stay a year longer in the NAB Cup system making it a bit tougher for second tier club recruiting. They will probably be looking at more seasoned players from interstate or the country.

  5. Who knows where any potential rookie listing or not might lead young Kobe with the MFC and I'm sure there are those whom might take a clinical view of the world and suggest that if he wasn't taken in the draft that perhaps there is some good reasons for that and why would we now rookie list him. However if Kobe is anywhere near just good enough and ticks all the right character tests etc for us to use a rookie spot on and develop, I really do like us having some father sons around the place. Think it adds some depth of character and meaning to pulling on the MFC jumper if we can maintain and build a good sense of club loyalty and history, which elevates the retention/attraction of playing for the MFC in general.

  7. Best of luck Kobe!!!! Hope you can make it and earn a spot out onto the ground for a game or a 150.

  8. Pleased he had been invited to train with our group. The fact that he was not father son listed by either club. Nor selected by any other club in the draft. In fact did not rate any mention I could see. Raises concerns about his ability, but at least this way we can make our own determination. So no regrets. Maybe he is young or too lite for the moment but might develop at a later age. We should have a relationship at least. The Wiz was far too good not to try !

  9. Kobe might not become as good as his Father however that is ok He would have to be special if he was to be as good. If Kobe happens to be half as good then he will turn out an excellent player for our club. I am hoping that we pick him and lock him in and within time he will get bigger and we just might have something. l am sure he has good footy genes. A Farmer running around at the Dees would be something special.

  10. Great to see Dees giving Kobe the opportunity with the group. It would be a great story for the Dees if he could make it. The Wiz is one of my favourite players ever. Such a talent and so entertaining.

  11. Yes, it is best to keep your expectations low, in order to avoid being disappointed, in this crapola of a year. Waiting for 2021. Kick the backside of this year on the way out. Cheers. Thanks a lot.

  12. Q: Who finished second behind Dusty in the 2017, 2019 and 2020 Norm Smith medals? A: Houli, Houli, Short. If he can handle afl pressure and get a dozen kicks across half back then he’ll prove his worth.

  13. I hear you Deegirl I had to stop watching mid-way through 2019. Wasn’t fair on the family to put up with my outbursts and grumpiness. I was so expectant after 2018 and then….devastation. Disappointment is the lot of most fans but the life of a dees supporter is a tough road. But having said that, when we eventually come good, and we will (hopefully I’ll be alive) it will be all the sweeter for having travelled that road. Go dees!

  14. https://www.afl.com.au/news/533681/bids-bluffs-and-frantic-calls-inside-2020-s-first-round-draft-frenzy An interesting article about how the first round panned out behind the scenes with numerous deals in the works had stars aligned differently. In relation to the dees, we had an offer from the crows involving our 18 and 28 for their 22 and 23, leaving us with 19, 22, 23. However the article states the crows were intent on using that pick for Laurie. No other whispers in terms of potential deals we were involved in however it did mention the Giants interest in both Bowey and Laurie for their pick immediately following us, which then made them pull the trigger on trading out that pick to the pies for their future first. Also mentioned that if the tigers had of kept their pick they were likely to take Laurie and West Coast also tried to get into the tigers pick for either Laurie or O'Driscoll. Saints also keen on Laurie and Bowey.

  16. ALEX DOCHERTY at The Mongrel Punt Bailey Laurie – Forward/Midfielder, 179cm, 78kg There are a few boys from the Oakleigh Chargers that will have their names called out and one of them should be Bailey Laurie; a clever little small forward who can also provide some run and dash through the middle. It’s hard to get a full-time gig in there when you had Matt Rowell, Noah Anderson and Will Phillips running the show in the square – they made getting to the Grand Final look like it was a kick at the park on a beautiful Sunday afternoon. But nonetheless, Laurie’s contribution to this amazing Chargers team shouldn’t be understated. He played seven games in return for six goals and averaged 15.3 disposals, three marks and 3.6 tackles per game playing more as a half-forward type. He puts in the hard yards as much as anyone else and has the innate ability to make things happen going forward with the footy, it would’ve been nice to see what he could’ve done in that Chargers midfield this year, he could’ve easily averaged 20 disposals per game.

  17. No need to apologise most of us share your feelings. Sadly, it’s always been part of our human nature, worsened by the invisibility of social media where individuals say things in a manner they would never say face to face, and If they did, I would punch them very hard in the face. Remember, like in real life there are more good guys than bad. It seems you are on the right side.

  18. So we shouldn't expect to see him until about age 30, where he will develop a cult following after displaying some freakish ability, before being brutally cut from the list? Guess after that we can re-draft him during the mid-season draft the following year to revive his career.

  19. This young recruit looks perfect (for a change) with inside passing to forwards - from multiple (including long-distance) passing inside the hot zone. It is great to see. A very good, evasive and eyes-up feeder for BB, Fritta and the Weed. I can magnify that with the timely additional acquisition of 'Jake, the Bowey Knife' feeding machine. In addition to these attributes and impressive signs, both of the blokes can 'go the goal' themselves with accuracy, distance as required and somewhat surreptitiously for opposition defenders. Must get my membership shorted ASAP! Both of them have hellishly good foot skills I've noticed.

  20. I don't get how this is about Richmond. We had a pick in the draft and we chose to pass. We could have taken him if we rated him high enough. He is training at Richmond but if we have an interest we have a pick in the SSP before them. Who knows if we asked him to train on with us but at least someone has and if we think he is worthy he should be gettable.

  21. Looks like our short list of players for our first 2 picks and happy to take any two of Bowey, Laurie, McCrae, Rosman, Angwin, Holmes, For our 3rd pick we were hopeful one of Rosman, Angwin, Holmes or Caroll I believe we were allways going to take at least one of Bowey or Laurie with either mcCrae, Angwin or Holmes Our draft list might of looked like Bowey Laurie Rosman McCrae Angwin Holmes Carrol It may of also been Angwin McCrae Holmes Bowey Laurie Rosman Carrol

  23. I don't believe so, although many people do and I thought so too, for a period of time. I think his reputation for encouraging, communicating and developing indigenous, as well as other ethnic background players is part of why he is so well regarded in developing young talent.

  25. Does Williams have indigenous heritage himself and/or has he got a good track record of understanding and getting the most out of players with an indigenous background? I'm genuinely interested.

  26. He’s lived with it all his life and hopefully, has learned to cope with the mostly unreal expectations placed on his shoulders. No doubt the club is well aware of this and will ensure that he’s well mentored over the coming months. I would expect that Nev Jetta would be fantastic in the role.

  28. It's interesting how many other clubs like Laurie at our range and how the dominoes fell after Macrae was taken a pick before Richmond selected. Without that happening, Richmond were happy to trade the pick (would have picked Laurie if they held the selection), Adelaide, GWS & West Coast liked him there too, and if Geelong don't trade for Max Holmes we probably would have missed him. GWS apparently don't do the trade for Collingwoods '21 first rounder if one of Laurie and Bowey slip through, which tells you how highly clubs rated them. Saints had an interest in Bowey with their first rounder as well. I think where we got trumped was with Angwin. GWS pounced ahead of our early picks, some connected to Angwin felt even he thought he was going to be a Dee.

  30. Personally I'd be leaving a slot open for the mid season draft. There'll be more than one good player that slipped through the draft purely due to the circumstances. With half a season under their belt we'll have a better idea on talent.

  33. looking at the end of the number reveal video, Rosman already has very broad shoulders and well developed lats. He looks like he's going to be a much bigger more powerful specimen than Isaac Smith when he fully develops.

  35. I just realised why I feel a little uncomfortable about his face when I see this picture. It's because Laurie's head looks like someone use one of those face mash-up apps on... Freaking me out a little.

  38. Why do so many supporters dismiss Jay Lockhart? Easily The best small defender Developing and was outrageously left out from about Round 12 in 2020 by a Coach who just stopped developing him. Faith in ability needs to be shown fir confidence and Jays style and dare are just what our backline needs from the BP.

  39. I think Joeboy would definitely sum up Fraser Rosman in 3 words. Speed, endurance, size. Can’t wait to see how he develops and could play back or forward or on probably even fit in on the wing. Mark Williams will work with this kid a lot in 2021.

  40. His 1996 and 1997 seasons were write offs due to the back problems... a real shame as he was at the peak of his powers having kicked 77 and 79 goals in 94/95. His comeback in 1998 in Round 2 against North was one of my favorite Demon games ever. He kicked 40 goals that season and helped us into the prelim final. I still believe that Gary Lyon is hugely underrated by the footy world.

  43. I think the exciting thing with this pick, is we have taken a player who has a number of attributes, who might be able to be developed into a very good player. We can then live in hope we have got a very good one. With some other players, you know what you are getting, as they were at their best in the younger competitions and may not improve much when playing against the big boys. That is a pretty common trait among many draftees over the years. Take Toumpas as an example, who was a very good player among his age group, but just couldn't improve in the AFL and didn't make it as an AFL player. We all know drafting is an inexact craft, every recruiter has had failures as that is the way of recruiting. With this kid Rosman, who has many attributes, such height, speed and endurance as examples, we have a base to work on, that may have a very high ceiling and that is exciting, as we take the journey with him.

  44. I’m mates with someone very high up at Caulfield Grammar. Said he’s an absolute ripper who has worked his guts out to improve after getting a scholarship in year 10. Freakish skills that remind him of Caleb Daniel with how he uses the footy. Comes from a great family with great values. He also added Will Phillips will play 200 games and captain the Roos.

  45. Name is Weideman and the Pies first pick is a Round 2 selection. I’d rather that Sam has a great season in 2021 now that he’s second dibs behind Ben Brown in our key forward stakes, that he learns from Brown’s presence and they play in a successful side.
    1 point
  46. Reckon you've misrepresented the view of quite a few here, Doc. I haven't read anyone claiming that Weideman is a champion, only that he is tracking upward, which for a KPF at 23 is somewhat expected. I do agree that competition for his spot will be handy and welcome, but I'd prefer not to be paying lots for his back up. And let's be clear, McDonald is the back up here. That may change, but at this point, it's Weideman's position to lose. I wouldn't have McDonald anywhere near my backline, but each to their own.
