  1. Ripper kid. Rapt with this. Rivers extends until 2023

  2. You are kidding? Trade Oliver? Wow. I don't think you'll ever come back from that.

  3. Sometimes you need to remember that players are people with families. Oscar has copped some serious abuse from supporters and honestly if he wants out, so be it. He is far from the worst player to ever make a career for themselves in the AFL.

  5. TMac is absolutely right - Oscar's treatment by supporters is bloody horrible. You can challenge a player's position in the team without reverting to personal vitriol. Even on this site, which is mostly pretty respectful, I've gotten to the point where I look for keywords. If I see words like 'spud' or 'useless', I'll scroll past because it's immediately clear the person hasn't put much thought into their post. I'd imagine it'd be very difficult to simply scroll past that if it's about you.

  6. Oscar has had good games and some poor games for MFC. The problem is that in the role he plays his good games are often invisible - spoils, blocks, postioning and things he prevents his opponents from achieving, whereas when it goes wrong it results in maximum exposure - goals deep in the forward line. He doesn't deserve the vitriol he receives. Other players in other roles are far less exposed when they make errors. Think Zac Dawson - much maligned but Ross Lyon loved him.

  7. I went to school and played under age football with a guy who was at least 1 or 2 levels better than anyone else in the team. He was about 10x better than me. He went to a successful VFL club and played 2 or 3 seasons in the U19s and Reserves before moving to a successful football career at a strong club in a rated regional league. I know how good he was and he couldn't make it at the top level. I never call AFL players spuds for that reason.

  8. Every thread ends up as either sack Goodwin or crying that someone we moved on did one good thing for their new club.

  9. It’s fair for fans to criticise players for apparent poor performances but if you are a true supporter of this footy club, you don’t resort to name calling from behind a keyboard. It’s understandable that some comments are made in game threads out of sheer frustration and emotion but our season is finished now. Post season offensive snipes are unwarranted and gutless. Oscar has pulled on our jumper 81 times, tried his best and deserves some respect for that. Some of you need to give yourselves an uppercut. Or get your mum’s to do it.

  10. On paper, our coaching box is pissypoor in comparison to most other teams (apart from Norf). About time we got some glam in there that the players can be inspired by. It will also be good is they can coach well.

  12. I’d play him one out in the square as a small/medium sized forward.

  13. I'll put my hand up and say I got it wrong. The same thing happened the first time I thought he had signed, he had been offered a contract and was expected to sign and I either took what I was told the wrong way or was misled somewhat. Either way, my fault, and I'll cop it on the chin. Still waiting on the same posters that are harassing me for this mistake to say thanks for all the info that's been correct, but I get that's not the 'Demonland way'.

  14. Completely disagree. Oliver's a far better player off his 4 seasons in the game than Kelly's 6 seasons. Oliver is our Sam Mitchell. Our gun extractor. You can say what you like about their disposal comparison, but Kelly struggles to win his own ball, particularly in recent times. Oliver is untradeable.
    7 points
  15. No, no I wouldn't. There wouldn't be a realistic price you could pay to trade Oliver. And it certainly wouldn't be Kelly, who IMV is no better than Salem on recent form. Oliver is an incredibly durable player. Since his first season, he hasn't missed a game. You watch when we don't have him. Our midfield will be nowhere. Fast becoming the most underrated player in the competition.

  16. Jay Clark on triple M yesterday said that Melbourne will be active this trade period and we've got our eyes set on Jared Polec and Isaac Smith as our main targets. Ben Brown was brought up as a discussion and both Nathan Brown and Joey Montanga both agreed that Brown should be our main priority.

  18. He's well known for his match day tactics and played a huge role in Hawthorns ball movement during their flag years so i suspect it'll be something similar to the role Craig Jennings used to hold.

  19. Great news! West Coast rate him big time and reached out to his management, so I’m glad he decided to extend with us rather than head home to WA. This kid looks like he’ll own a HBF for the next decade. Lots of signings announced so I’m assuming they’re building to Viney as the finale!

  20. It is early days right now but this kid looks the best of the three taken last year.

  21. And can I also just say how happy I am that they stuck it up WA and their moronic premier who is keeping his borders shut for financial rather than medical reasons. He has been a [censored] since day one. Made it as hard as possible for the AFL. Serves him and his team right (I assume he’s an arrogant WC fan just because he carries himself like a total [censored])

  22. I have said it all season put Harmes in the tagging midfield roll and rotate the other midfielders between the f50 and midfield. It ain’t rocket science and getting rid of any of any of our midfielders would be a massive mistake IMO. I can’t understand why it’s so hard to do but Goodwin for some reason is not doing it. He would rather play them out of position and then wonder why thy are out of form. FMD has s ain’t that hard.

  23. The Hotel Quarantine fiasco caught them unawares. It would have caught the government of any political persuasion out because there simply WERE NO protocols, nor were there historical precedents. The Ruby Princes fiasco is an example of this. Because the Press in this fine land is mainly owned by Rudolfo, we only hear about the fiasco of Dictator Dan.The Murdoch Press also totally ignores the fiasco the Aged Care sector has become under the watch of the so-called Liberals, where pigs like Abbott and Bolt inform us that it's only the 'olds' who are dying, what's the problem? Can you imagine how much more Andrews would have copped it if he HADN'T imposed the strict measures we now face? He was stuffed if he did, even more stuffed if he hadn't. In the meantime, privileged wankers like Newman and the Karins from Brighton make merry on Herald Sun.

  25. There’s obviously talk about Ben Brown but I’d think he’d potentially be too much of a clash with Weid. I think Mihocek and Weid could work well together up forward. All for us chasing him.

  27. I always rated Brett Ratten right from when he had a great effect on our midfield waaaaay back in the day. Possibly even under Daniher! He has also clearly done great work getting St Kilda organised and focused and competitive, making the most of a list with few stars but I'd argue reasonably even quality with a short 'tail'. BUT Before starting at St Kilda he had a six year term as a senior coach, and for all that he clearly was a good coach it still took him five years to win his first final. His winning percentage over those six years was coincidentally almost exactly that of Goodwin's so far at Melbourne. So I would argue it is perfectly reasonable for Goodwin to have 2021 to prove he has learnt more about this coaching caper. I'd also say that based on our (and Simon's) known/apparent deficiencies, Adem Yze would be a sublimely well-matched assistant/sparring partner for Goodwin.

  29. Who selected his current coaching panel? And who decided to let his experienced coaching support go last year and hire Richardson, if he didn't? Based on the last 4 years, I have little confidence in his judgement of what makes a successful coaching panel.

  30. Each to their own mate, except if we're talking about wearing red and blue coloured glasses, I think you can take out the red and blue lenses and put some prescription lenses in, because even contemplating trading Oliver is absurd.

  31. Good Question , l thought the same and l am sure others as well. If he is gettable and he wants to be there ,he would be a breath of fresh air to the playing list picking the brain of a great young assistant coach also teaching his know how. Better than what we have. I think that Goody is professional enough to work in with Adem Yze and for the same cause could become a successful combination. Anything is possible. I for one is hoping.

  32. well the list would be a lot better off if I was in charge. Watts would've been cut after 3 seasons, Oscar McDonald after 2, i would've hit the draft and got King over May. I would've made a strong decision and cut Jones this season and not gift a guy games to get him to 300.

  34. I've got a confession. I dislike Geelong more than Collingwood.

  35. So it's certainly worth noting that Port, Brisbane, St Kilda and now Collingwood (who look like they're home) are through. Of those four teams, Port we failed to turn up, Brisbane we were a simple set shot from Harley away from winning, we beat St Kilda and we beat Collingwood. We missed a shot after the siren to Geelong and stopped for a quarter against the Bulldogs and Richmond. The latter game we used the ball terribly in. Despite not getting the job done this year, it has to be said with a few tweaks, a few new additions to the best 22, another pre season under Burgess, Goodwin's job on the line and increased consistency and we're not a world off 4th-6th position next year.

  36. We should offer a long term contract and see what happens. Worse case it puts Collingwood under more salary cap strain. One of best kicks in the comp on the other wing to Langdon, yes please. JOSH DAICOS (COLLINGWOOD) Draft picks: Early-to-mid second-round pick Value on open market: $400,000-500,000 per season Still most likely to stay at the Pies on a multi-year deal but will have to knock back bigger offers in order to do so. The 21-year-old has enjoyed a breakout 2020 campaign, playing all but one game and proven himself as one of the best kicks inside 50 in the competition.

  37. Jay Clark said on triple M that Viney hasn't given a confirmation to Melbourne whether he's staying or going, but the club are really confident he'll stay.

  38. Confirmation bias. He played a couple of good games this year too, from limited opportunities. I won't stress if he is traded, but I believe at the right club he will develop into a handy backman. A change for Oscar will be as good as a holiday. Good luck to him.

  39. Greenwood tagged Kelly out of the game last night. It's a useful hand to have up your sleeve come finals time. Not out of date at all.

  40. I look at what Richmond have done with Astbury, who at the same age as Oscar had played less than 50 games and was a whipping boy, and wonder how how he would go there. In the right setup, he could become a pretty good role player.

  41. So his role of stopping an opposition key forward wasn't clear enough for him? I agree that he is no star, and that moving to a second club may give him more opportunities and he may become an excellent soldier there, but I hardly think that his role hasn't been clear enough. He's in the side to stop an opposition key forward. Even if there are other aspects thrown in, I hardly think it's a tough role to understand.

  42. Some ask what does Adem bring. Well, the reason Chaplin joined was he came a current player fresh out of the system at Richmond. I could not see the reasoning for this at the time and still don't. Coaching is an ever evolving art and many assistants have been found wanting in the main role. I am not interested in the romance of Adem returning to this old club, he wont be putting on his boots for us but I do believe he has something to offer as an assistant coach which may further develop the team Adem's skill set has already been listed here but in pre season Clarko is happy for Adem to be the main coach. He has moved up their heirachy to be Clarko's confident and match day strategy, an area we all know is not Goody's strong point. Our existing coaches have been there for a while and it is time to bring in experienced assistants with fresh ideas. Under Clarko we have seen, Simpson, Beveridge, Ratten and Bolton with only the latter not succeeding take over the reigns with some premiership success. If Goody is as obstinate as people say only a strong minded, well credentialed and respected assistant will get through to him. Goody also will be aware his career is on the line next year so he needs all the help he can get.

  43. Status of our OOC players: re-sign-or-let-go-your-club-s-out-of-contract-players (I've edited out recent changes announced) Out of Contract: Toby Bedford, Mitch Brown, Kade Chandler, Mitch Hannan, Michael Hibberd, Marty Hore, Jayden Hunt, Nathan Jones, James Jordon, Jay Lockhart, Oscar McDonald, Aaron Nietschke, Charlie Spargo, Jack Viney. Summary: Viney still unsigned. Jones future unclear. Hibberd will want multiple years. Bedford will stay but rival clubs interested. Oscar is waiting for an offer. Nietschke has been guaranteed a deal for 2021 I had thought a year by year contract would be the way to go with Hibberd. Would really like to see Lockhart signed up. He had a pretty good year until Rivers took his spot. Would still be very good back up in that small defender role especially with Jetta slowing down.

  45. Remarkable game by the Pies unfortunately they made the Finals and we didn't . They are mentally much tougher than we are and l don't like to say it however that it is a fact. The proof is in the pudding they beat the WCE in a final as underdogs when it counted. I hope our guys understand what it takes to play finals . As much as l hate them tonight l admire there urgency and want. It was hard earned.

  46. People will be underwhelmed if they’re solely looking at Jacks stats as he doesn’t have the free rein that Olly and Trac get. He played a lot of defensive roles this year and played them very well which again is confirmed by his placing in the B and F. His third placing also debunks a lot of myths that he’s not coachable. I don’t get where people get this from other than making some crap up. Ill admit, there were a few times this year the remote nearly went through the TV when he was pinned HTB but I have faith that this was due to him trying to lace someone instead of 2019 footy in bombing it in to no one. He’s not on the same level as Olly and Trac but he’s a bloody good foot soldier who Id much rather have in the red and blue. I don’t mind players testing the market to estimate there worth. It would be ridiculous if you didn’t as we all know how quickly a career can end. He’s got a young family to take care of. Pay him what’s fair as there’s a reason why other teams are after him.
