  1. One day, maybe, we'll win a premiership and people will complain that the cup isn't shiny enough. Welcome to Demonland.

  2. What are everyone's thoughts on trading pick 22 for a player that: 1) averages 25 touches/ 6 marks a game, 2) kicks a goal every second week, 3) is a genuine winger perfectly suited to the MCG 4) is one of the best runners in the business: 5) and has played 43 of the last 44 games.

  3. Fair dinkum I'm just about over this site. Are you being serious. The blues and the saints are competitive environments? Based on what? That both sacked their coach half way through last season because both teams had been rubbish for years? Or that neither have played finals in donkey's years? Or that one has only won one flag and the other not in decades? And we are designed to building through the draft? Did you miss the memo we have locked in Langdon and Tomlinson, chased elliot and no doubt will look to bring in another established player. Fair dinkum. Is a modicum of logic too much to ask?

  4. That is an indictment on the lions. An embarrassment.

  6. But according to you Elliott would have been downgrading. Downgrading from something you have no interest in apparently. You seem to find it impossible to sustain an idea from post to post.

  7. Amazing that there’s even any question if pick 22 is “fair”. Established AFL quality in exchange for a lottery ticket. It’s the noest of brainers ever for me. At least we’ve learned from the Melksham and Hibberd trades and aren’t screaming “overs!!!”

  8. Lewis was in his 30s when he came to us, and on his last legs. Tomlinson is in his prime. I don't understand the comparison at all. This guy has played for a very good team for a very long time, he has speed and agility, and he cost us nothing. I don't care about contract lengths and figures, I leave that up to our list managers. I care that we got a quality player who will be in our starting 22 nearly every week, and we did not need to give up a single thing for him.

  9. Happy with this. Best 15 easily so an upgrade on a few other blokes and he can play multiple roles. Makes the team better immediately.

  10. This is the reason we want him and why he is an immediate lock. We seriously lack endurance runners. It is why the much maligned anb got a new contract. Modern footy is all about defensive gut running. Listen to Oliver's speech from the bluey for evidence of that.

  14. You keep saying this, except he plays on a wing. That's his best position. Here is his possession heat map for 2019. The one showing the hotspots on the wings, a bit in the centre, the defensive flanks and dropping back to full back (but never going near CHB), and occasionally drifting forward on the flanks? That's Tomlinson.

  15. Because he's contracted to the Swans. So unless you'd like to use pick 3 or a future 1st on Papley and a huge contract then I would look at the draft for some small quick talent

  16. Now that we’re done looking at Elliot, how about this bloke. 2017: 30.15 from 23 games 2018: 18.10 from 15 games 2019: 5.3 from 7 games Won’t be shooting the lights out, however would do well in our forward system . That 2017 year where he was involved in the Tigers premiership tilt kicking 30 odd with 5 or 6 as well during the finals series amongst the likes of Rioli, Caddy and Castagna is pretty decent indicator of his ability. Would certianly come cheap in terms of both $$$ and picks. I don’t think he’s gone that far backwards, simply others like Bolton have gone past him. Kicked 21 from 15 games this year in the VFL which isn't amazing, however a fresh start could be exactly what he needs to get back into form, much like Sam Lloyd's move to the doggies has rejuvenated his career into an almost 2 goal a game player. Could definitely exceed 25+ goals for a small forward which would really compliment our forward mix which is imo far too reliant on taking marks inside 50 especially given how atrocious our delivery is.

  17. It seems to me that no matter what Melbourne do, someone here will always find a way to turn it on the club. Have reasonable talks about potential trade = "The clubs caved." Take a tough stance about potential trade = "The club has no idea what they're doing! We have to give up x pick to get them!" PS. If the club had truly caved for whatever Freo wanted, Freo would be getting a first round pick.

  18. Let me be the first to say he is an over rated injury prone player who would spent more time at the tattoo parlour than roaming our forward line. Dodged a bullet there.

  19. I think Tomlinson might surprise us. Elite mark, and god knows we need that. Good tank and a big boy. He will want to prove himself at his new club too.

  20. Same people complaining we missed out would have been complaining had we signed him "overpaid" "injury prone" "Collingwood cast-off" etc etc It's the nature of the beast, some people just love to complain and this website is evidence of the adage misery loves company. Doesn't matter what happens, whatever happens is evidence of the failure/incompetence of the club

  21. Welcome aboard, Adam and kudos to our recruiting team. It's disappointing but hardly surprising that the usual suspects on this board will look for the cloud and not the silver lining.

  25. Gus doesn't strike me as a 'mummy's boy' and follow his family. I think the Brayshaw's are made of sterner stuff. And, his partner is Danny Frawley's daughter Danielle. A good reason to stay in Melbourne.

  26. He might be. But Freo did the same to us last year with Hogan.

  28. I was looking through some of the early phantom drafts and power ranking lists and noticed that there was a definite leaning or bias towards players from Victoria. This is despite the fact that the Under 18 NAB AFL Championships were won this year by Western Australia. In Cal Twomey’s September Draft Rankings, not a single player from the winners made the top ten. Last year, it was South Australia that won the championship and that state provided three of the top five draftees. On that basis it might be worthwhile to take a closer look at the talent from WA given that state’s strengths in the national competition. The Croweaters also did well this year and one player from their team who has attracted my eye because he has all the attributes we need in a young midfielder - a good mix both inside and out, endurance and pace and a good user of the ball. I think Dylan Stephens who has been mentioned by a few posters might be a player who could be in line for selection, more so if the club manages to split pick 3. AFL Draft Wrap: SA midfielder Dylan Stephens firms as top-10 selection

  29. I don't have many football stories, but one day a few or so years ago, when Ratten was coach of Carlton, I was on a plane with the Carlton side. I was seated close to the coaching staff and was listenning/eaves dropping a bit. Wasn't hard as they were speaking quite freely. Anyway, Richardson was the stand out. He had a laptop and was going through things with Ratten (who didn't seem interested), other coaches but particularly individually with players. It was a while ago so details are sketchy but I think the flight was to Brisbane and he was preparing for a game against the Lions. The main thing I took away was how keen and energetic he was, and also that Ratten was asking who their seconds were playing in the VFL that week, it took a while to get an answer from someone. I found, and still find it, amazing that someone in a management position like that, and most of his team, were not across such aspects. Anyway, Richarson stood out on that day and as many have said - I think we have picked up a good football person who loves the game more than the industry.

  30. He can take a grab. I think his numbers for marking are elite. So if he is on the wing we have a very interesting set up with Max and he taking down the line marks. That should help us enormously. I like the comparison above - like TMac but with better disposal.

  31. More probably that we still don’t have a home to store it in

  32. Let's be honest, there is no formula. It's just the AFL deciding what they want to give based on the side losing the player. It helped us net a top 3 pick for Frawley so I'm not complaining.... just think if they want to be serious about it the formula should be available to all and transparent.

  34. The thing that really excites me about this guy is that his last 4 games of the season were at a very high quality. He averaged the following: Disposals - 29.5 Marks - 6.5 Tackles - 2 Goals - 1.25 Fantasy Points - 111.25 He could be the steal of this trade period if he continues his trajectory as an outside mid.

  35. Tigers got pick after there 2nd which is as high as you can go without been a first round comp, gws get end of 2nd round which is lowest 2nd round comp you can get. Ladder position makes them similar picks in the end but the contacts is suspect would be significantly different, I’m guessing 3 years and high 300 - low 400 for Tomlinson based on that

  37. If Brayshaw goes to Fremantle Peter Bell might get that feather in his cap that he keeps banging on about.

  38. After Bell messing us around last year, I would offer them next years 2nd, & hold that position. It’s not how we operate though.

  40. Yeah nah we suck, Mahoney sucks, Goodwin is so desperate, we over pay we are getting bent over let him walk in the PSD that would be the ballsy decision to make ? Kidding... p22 is a very fair deal for both parties if he was an elite kick (which hopefully he develops) he would be worth a top 10 pick

  41. I think people are confounding the need for pace, when you play on the wing, vs outside run from stoppages. Best wingman this year (not the AFL AA version)... bloody Mitch Robinson... Someone already posted it early this year.. this article is a fascinating read on how to play wing in 2019, and what the expected requirements are... https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/mitch-robinson-why-allaustralian-panel-made-a-mockery-of-players-by-not-selecting-genuine-wingmen/news-story/9e0d4e49d1770d54788d0a2174461cef Some key points from Mitch on how he viewed traditional wingman... I think some current posters, still hold this view. Before this year, my perspective on what attributes are required for a winger would be what most of the AFL community probably thinks, that they: — Hate the contested football — Are extremely fit — Probably weigh about 70 to 80kg — Are a great ball-user and can run the 3km time trial in less than 10 minutes

  42. Not sure what position we'll play him but you can bet your bottom dollar he will be playing relief ruckman for Max instead of Weid and TMac. Take that to the bank.

  44. I heard an interesting rumor. Can't reveal my source. Apparently in North Korean 'work' camps, as a form of cruel torture, they are forcing all prisoners to listen to every minute of trade radio (including last weeks horror) via the camp PA. When live option not avaiable they are looping the hourly updates. What man will do to each other!

  45. OMG I CAN'T BELIEVE THE CLUB HAS HIM OUT DOING THIS KIND OF THING RIGHT AFTER SURGERY TERRIBLE INJURY MANAGEMENT HE IS CLEARLY LEAVING NOW JUST WATCH AS THE CLUB ROLLS OVER IN THE TRADE.

  46. Here's the thing with Frost that I think our bias (and I mean that in a good way) gets in the way of: Over the past few seasons we've recruited quite heavily in our back half. Hibberd, Lever and May have all been brought it in at a pretty decent cost, and it was clear that guys like Oscar and Frost were viewed as nothing more than depth players. Why else would we have gone on such a recruitment drive in our defence? If we believed those two were the future then we would have backed them in. Recruiting those three over the past few seasons is evidence of the fact that we didn't. However, with injuries, Frost stood up in defence and had a pretty darn good season. Nothing wrong with that and, at times, he really did some good stuff. Other times... not so much. But in such a horror season he stuck out like dogs balls with his run and dash and his ability, at times, to play very well on key forwards. Because of this season, he is asking for a very big pay rise, which the club refuses to meet and with good reason. Our first choice back line doesn't include him, and he is asking for money that would indicate that he is a key cog in our backline. There is nothing wrong with him asking for that money based off this season, but there is nothing wrong with the club putting what they think is a fair contract on the table either. Obviously there is a gap there and he looked elsewhere to see what he could get. The Hawks have obviously offered him better terms, or he sees the Hawks as an opportunity to play AFL footy regularly as opposed to potentially spending more time at Casey in 2020. The club would be making a bad decision paying big bucks to a bloke who not only has his flaws, but also doesn't fit in our best 22. We can't sign blokes to big dollars in case we have a few injuries - Oscar and Petty are more than capable of coming in where needed and they're being paid far, far less to do it. The club is well within it's rights to do what it has done, just as Frosty is. If he leaves and we can get a pick out of it in the second round then I won't be complaining.
