  1. He'd be getting on a bit but we might be able to snaffle him in the mid season draft

  4. You seem to be absolving Clarry of blame. Clearly this is not all about our dysfunctional forwardline. Look at his kicking on the weekend. It was atrocious, as it often is if we’re going to call a spade a spade. The guy is a jet and does have the ability to kick well, but the continual throwing it on the boot and hoping for the best has to end at some point. It’s not working.

  5. The best was from Hunt after the siren (3qtr time) with the pressure of a real game result to worry about. In case someone needs reminding: It will be a long time before someone beats it in my book.

  9. If we had a player who could move at 2469 kilometres per hour we would never lose a game. Alas, Moloney was not even close to being so fast.

  11. No wonder the game looks like ping-pong played between the 50m arcs! This highlights how bad our midfield is at kicking forward. They all bomb it into no-man's land. Most teams know that and play an extra defender to intercept or mark it. An interesting stat would be the # of opp marks in our fwd 50. I bet we would be one of the highest (badly) ranked teams. Our fwds don't stand much of a chance. For Oliver, only 1 kick in every 2 games stays i50 That is an indictment on his game. He works very hard for every possession so its such a shame that 41 of 45 are 'wasted'! Just shows that while his stats are great his impact is less so. Most of Oliver's i50 kicks seem to be around the body or at right angles to the fwd 50, he doesn't even try to look so he has no idea where the ball is going. Because they are high lobs it gives defenders too much time to get to the flight of the ball and intercept. Time to slow down a tad and straighten up. Then we will see a real champion.

  12. Completely agree, he’s not alone in this but 4 out of 45 inside 50s is horrible. I really feel like the players are being told to just get it in there without an actual plan. There is very little lowering of the eyes and even when we do it’s usually a poor kick. Fix it Goody!

  13. Really? We have 10 to 15 injuries and we've won our last two games, one against the Hawks who just knocked off the Giants. I reckon our depth is doing pretty well.

  15. I pointed this out last year but for those who do not know of Stats pro on AFL.com it is a brilliant resource. If you are a Telstra customer, in addition to having access to live pass you also have access to video of every player's involvements in each game from the last 3 years. It is great way to get an objective perspective on a players game. Watching the video of Omac's last two games highlights that a key feature of his game is how many spoils he effects. All of his 13 one percenters last game were spoils (and 9 of 10 v the Hawks). Spoils often go unnoticed by commentators but even they made comment on how many spoils we made (though of course not the fact that Omac got most of them). It should be noted that reflecting his poor start to the season Omacs one percenters were way down (averaging around 5-6) prior to being dropped, and no doubt that was a big factor in him being dropped. Omac killed Peter Wright - gave him nothing. Don't believe me, look at the evidence. If Wright gets off the chain we lose that match. Colins meanwhile gave up 3 goals to TMac, who despite those goals most are saying still played poorly. And i can't believe in the analysis on Footy Classified and AFL 360 i saw that Collins' decision to sag of TMac (his man) at the death and his failure then to get back on him and either stop him kicking the ball off the ground or stopping the ball was not highlighted (or even commented on) as it literally cost GC the game. I have no doubt Dew highlighted it in his review

  16. In today's Age Malcolm Blight extols the virtues of the torpedo punt, as well he might because he used it magnificently. i want to tell all Demon supporters that we have an equally great exponent. Last year, 90 minutes before the first final v Geelong, Harmes and Fritsch amused themselves by having dozens of shots at goal from out on the old cricket pitch area. Harmes landed a few decent long shots. But Bayley Fritsch was a revelation. He kicked an amazing number of goals using a torp from 60m plus, and they were going through half way up the posts, with unerring accuracy. I've never seen anything like it! In my view Bayley should always play in the forward line. Things are pretty hopeless aren't they? .Lets have a bit of fun. Put Fritsch on the forward line and tell him to go for it

  18. Simpletons can look at this and blame Oliver. It ignores the countless times 2-3 forwards have lead to the same spot. Oliver is a star. Watch the Sydney game to see a guy put his body on the line for the club. This guy doesn’t get cheap possessions wide like a lot of Melbourne ‘stars’ of the past 20 years. Look deeper than the stat. Yes, he can polish up his kicking, but Oliver is the least of our problems.

  19. Christian Salem would have to be considered. Having a very good year. Doesn’t get the credit outside the Demons faithful. And yes all this is “in theory”.

  20. Weren't we complaining 12-18 months ago that Oliver didn't kick the ball often enough? Seems somewhat ironic that now he's kicking it we're not so sure we want him to.

  30. 4-5 weeks is a rebrand of the old 4-6 week injury which is usually season ending and then causes problems for at least the next season. It's a change that Gary Pert made to stamp his name on our Footy Department and show he means business.

  34. Love child of Paul Roos and Daniel Cross? PS: Love your work, Saty. Particularly the photo of Lever training without knee strapping. I believe (with no evidence) that strapping is probably physically useless for rehabbing ACLs and therefore more a sign of psychological fear. I think no strapping suggests a high level of confidence in his recovery. At least, I hope so.

  36. Olivers kicking is essentially Moloney Mach 2 this year. He just throws it on the boot in hope something happens. While he’s racked up big numbers, his impact on games is definitely down. He used to be an effective kick, but that part of his game is off this year. Hopefully he learns to steady for a second longer to asses his options. As a team in general this year our kicking has been diabolical.

  42. I was taking the [censored]. I’m amazed that people actually believe we haven’t analysed that game endlessly. As @Ethan Tremblay wrote in another thread Goodwin has played this perfectly do one thing and tell the media another when it is to the benefit of the club

  43. What he tells the media and what he discusses with the players and staff are most likely two different things. I wouldn’t want to give the media anything either. They keep bringing up the Prelim in an attempt to manufacture a story, I think Goody plays them well.

  45. What concerns me is Marvel is owned by Disney that consumes everything in its path and Gil let the Mouse in through the front door. As for the 666 and constant rule changes, it reminds me of There Was an Old Lady That Swallowed a Fly.

  46. Er ... where did he say that they hadn't "taken learnings" from the PF? He didn't. On the contrary, the talk of taking Preuss is exactly what you would do if you were examining what went wrong in the PF, and where Max was double-teamed all match.

  47. My perspective is that the 6 6 6 rule has little to no impact other than the rare game, such as ours on the weekend, that are close at the end and teams get a small window of time to get a clearance into a forward line where the opposition has not flooded back. It may have contributed a tiny bit to some teams', like the dees, scoring chances if they used players off the back of the square as an attacking weapon, but that's hard to quantity (and in any case we stopped that largely by the end of last year). I thought the kick out might have an positive impact but as we have seen (and i think Lucifer's Hero might have predicted?) teams are just setting up the wall higher. All team seem to be giving the short kick to the pocket, which just slows everything down. Coaches are too risk averse to direct players to go down the center as a turnover means a score is likely. The real reason scoring has dried up is so many teams are maintaining possession and eating up the clock crossing back and forward across their half back line until they get some space to move it forward or instead take the slower option of slowly tic tacking it down the ground with dinky little 20 metre lead up kicks. The 'goal keeper' is also back in vouge and when both teams play the extra back you get games like the Freo v Crows game that are played in between the two 50 metre arcs. The one thing everyone agrees on is the problem (which the AFL has defined as low scoring), which is that coaches will always find a way to design defensive systems that make it hard for the opposition to score. Much easier to do than design attacking systems that regularly generate high enough scores to guarantee a positive win loss ratio (though of course they also have to work on attack). Given we know what the problem it makes sense to design the solution to target the problem - the coaches. But instead over the last decade the AFL have introduced on field rule changes to try and address the problem. And the evidence is clear - rules changes do not fix the problem of low scores and defence first game. So what's the solution? Simple: create an incentive for higher scoring in the home and away season. An extra premiership point for any team that scores 100 points in a game (for both the winner and loser). Coaches would move heaven and earth to get that point as success is making finals. And a premiership point is gold. You would get higher scoring games and far less games where one or both teams put their cue in the rack early and chip it around once the result is clear. There are a number of arguments against this idea. And one is that some teams would have an advantage as they play on drier grounds. Marvel stadium can close it roof and teams who randomly copped more wet games would be disadvantaged. But that all that would even out and in any case that argument presupposes the current draw is fair, which is patently not the case. Most of all providing an incentive to score would not change footy. Sure we have had four premiership points for a long time but final systems have changed multiple times and on field it would not change the game in the way something artificial like fixed zones would. The rule changes the AFL have introduced do change footy. Let the coaches coach. Let them innovate to their hearts content. It is one the best aspects of the game. Make them part of the solution, not the problem

  48. I think the people calling for OMac head are just missing having the chance to bag out Jack Watts! OMac won't be dropped, he has not been bad in the last two weeks, West Coast have 3 key targets in Kennedy and Darling and Oscar Allen. We also lose Hibberd from the back line. Smith in for Keilty, ANB for Milkshake , and maybe Baker/Sparrow if Lewis doesn't get up, or bring in Pruess if we want to change our structure up a bit, and allow Gawn to float back into defence as required.
