Interesting discussion. For my money I will say this: Being disabled or mentally ill is not a free pass to do anything you like with no consequences (very much like the "economy" really isn't a universal justification for anything our politicians want to do, no matter how much they might wish otherwise). He is still perfectly capable of behaving in an acceptable manner in public. Being a mindless drunk thug is likewise not a free pass to do anything you like with no consequences. He is also still perfectly capable of behaving in an acceptable manner in public. Violence should only ever be employed to protect people. I don't think either of them are blameless, but I will never know the whole story, so I can't really judge.12 points

Great article on both. https://www.foxsports.com.au/afl/melbourne-matureage-recruits-marty-hore-and-jay-lockhart-are-making-a-difference/news-story/530af5c695bbc61266eb83a96efa22f411 points

Great stuff here from Sir Marty Hore with the game in the balance. Wins the one on one, and follows it up with a big tackle for which he earned a free kick.11 points

I don't know about being ''disabled''. He's sharper than plenty of Demonland posters.10 points

Bloke bashes the daylights out of a mentally impaired man, but it’s all fine because they exchanged a few words and the victim knocked a beer out of his hand beforehand. F me, our society’s attitude towards violence is the pits. It staggers me that anyone thinks this is even remotely defensible, or that the two acts are in any way comparable.10 points

unprovoked What annoys me is how the video was cut and the "unprovoked, disgusting act of violence" story spun by the media got run. There is absolutely two sides to the event yet the media just shaped it to how they saw it and what would get the most reaction. Very poor all round.9 points

Why is there this debate about this Hawthorn supporters mental capacity. Like that was ever in question. Pretty much all Hawks suporters are NQR in the head to the extent they are arrogant obnoxious turds.9 points

Apparently the hawks fan has form with this sort of stuff, not condoning what the dees fan did but if you can’t handle your emotions and decide to knock beers out of people’s hands then stay at home and watch, I would ban both of them9 points

Kielty's debut is an interesting experience in social media. Drunkn is a fantastic contributor to Demonland and gives us a unique insight into how a player's family ride all the bumps with their son, brother, partner. I have big hopes for Kielty and hope he has a fantastic career with us, but the site in general has been much more accommodating of him as a player than we have with most others. We would do well to remember that every player in our team has a family and afford them the same respect that we have for the number 45.8 points

Been saying it all along. Tom Morris is a [censored] little grub! Club needs to call him out big time. What i see there is two blokes who have copped a bit of [censored] over yhis year and its almodt like they're saying "we got each other's back"... Well done McCartney and well done Goodwin.8 points

If this young man has an intellectual disability then he has truly been poorly ‘cared for’ by his carer. Getting on Hawks TV so he can be ‘built up’, then not helped to define appropriate behaviours at the footy, and also not being cared for enough to not get near an opposition supporter if he cannot control his physical responses is all poor. It all is so ‘hilarious’ to build him up and encourage him to carry on. I doubt he would have been called these things bu the Nufti who hit him if he wasn’t ‘engaging’. Then he is poorly managed to allow him into this situation if he has no ability to control his physical response. No one looks good here. The young man is now scared to go the footy. Hard way to learn a lesson that could have been better imparted by his ‘carers’ over time. But then that is not as ‘funny’ as having a disabled bloke going off at the footy, is it? The Nufti who punched him in the head will get done, society will demand it. (Punching someone in the head is an OTT response and does potentially lead to the terrible one-punch outcomes no-one wants to see). But he also did not deserve to have his chilled beverage knocked all over him. But I suspect this young man has been poorly ‘cared for’ in this instance, and leading up to the incident over time.7 points

High praise from Hibberd: On Hore: "...He drops back in space, helps the other defenders in the air and he is a great teammate. I love playing with Marty.” On Lockhart: "You just know what you’re going to get with Jay. He is as hard as nails and probably one of the toughest players I’ve come across in footy,” Hore and Lockhart would love hearing that from an experienced and succesful teammate. Only last week some on here were lamenting all the VFL standard players in our side. Hore and Lockhart may just prove the doubters wrong (along with Fritsch, Hannan, AVB)6 points

Pretty much sums it up DC. If the AFL was up to their virtue signalling best they'd ban grog at the footy. But we know that won't happen. I get sick of people constantly squeezing past me to either get grog or go to the pizzer during games. Go get grog, come back with 2 beers ..... Go to the pizzer, come back with more beers. And then there's 5 fools doing that in your row. Up down , up down ...... Just FO already.6 points

I would expect to get smashed if I knocked someones beer out of their hands. I don't pity the victim at all.6 points

Who cares. Bad [censored] happens everyday, much worse than this. I don’t feel the need to be outraged by this whatsoever. Plus no one knows the full story, don’t just go by a few seconds worth of footage which doesn’t show what happened prior.6 points

I think it’s just really poor form to sink 3-4 pints when you’re off injured and had skin fold issues. It shows a lack of respect to what the rest of the footy club is trying to do.5 points

I am not familiar with the content of Hawks TV (heaven forbid!), but the interviewer is a disgrace. He actively seeks out this fan (it doesn't appear to be the first time, they seem very familiar with each other) to record a barrage of abuse of his own players and opposition fans at the ground with supporters walking past (possibly with young children). The interviewer is doing this young man a great disservice in encouraging his angst and foul language as a means of expressing himself. Is this supposed to be entertainment? It is uncomfortable viewing and somehow I feel the interviewer is not displaying sympathy for his condition, but exposing him to more mockery by putting him before the camera to put on this show. This young man needs to find some peace within himself, not get himself so worked up with anger and frustration that he finds it difficult to articulate his feelings without foul language and abuse. Hawks TV is guilty of exploitation of a naive young man who needs guidance and good advice, not to be egged on and encouraged to violence, as you said, pitmaster.5 points

I'm more referring to people over the last few weeks calling for 'spuds' to be delisted whilst in their first year on a list. Calling for a player to be dropped is fine, it's the manner with which many deride young players trying their best that seems to have been missing in this particular case.5 points

Why do you need to drink at the footy? Aren't you there to watch the game? i almost never have an alcoholic drink at the footy, though the Dees make it almost necessary most weeks. Would you stay away if there was no drinking? It is there for the same reason as gambling - profits5 points

Agree, If selectors think that a player is good enough to get a game in the ones, then the player should be given a number of consecutive games to prove their worth. At least a minimum of 2 games and maybe 3 or 4. Totally opposed to selecting a player for their first game and dropping them a week later. It damages the players confidence and almost says'to everyone that the player should not have been selected in the first place. Sure there are players who put in a shocker in their first game, but that normally tells you that the player should not have been selected in the first place. Petty is an example.5 points

Weideman played well (I thought). Presented well and besides Mitch White was our only forward option. If he had held most of his marks that he went for we would be talking about him dominating the game. Got his hands to marks many times but just couldn't quite hold them. May come back in but another solid game with Casey should really boost his confidence. Spargo was good and was a link player with short kicks to position but probably didn't do enough for his ability. Baker is returning to some of the good form he showed last year prior to injury. Petty continues to impress. Corey wagner busted his gut all game and continues to press for higher honours, but will probably only get selected if another midfielder is injured. Sparrow the best of our young players and Jordan looks good. Both Chandler and Bedford struggle to get into the game.4 points

I just want to get this off my chest. A Handball is where the ball is held in one hand and propelled the other hand's closed fist. That's quite important. It has to be propelled by the fist. I am sick to death of seeing players brush the ball across their knuckles as they throw it and getting away with it. I don't care that it's made contact with their fist, it's still a throw. This is one of the fundamental skills of the game. Why is it adjudicated so badly?4 points

Good post with a number of good points. On where he is at I'd add to the point about his young age for a kpd, he like his brother and others had post season surgery and an interrupted pre season. As you say when not playing well ite seems to be a beacon for crtisism. But even when playing well some, including commentators, only seem to note his mistakes. I agree with the crtisisms of him not moving towards the ball twice in rhe last quarter and being outmarked as a result. But to suggest he nearly cost us the game is ridiculous. What nearly cost us that game - one we should have won by 5 goals - was our appalling handball and kicking skills all game. But particularly in rhe first half. Hore, Fritter, Lewis , gawn and Oliver made multiple howlers that cost both goals and chances at goal. It was a joke. Capped off by traccs shot on goal Jeffy for all his improved work cost us a sure goal with his selfishness (though it was great that he made up for that later) and don't get me started about harmed and his two identical 50s. Omac did not miss a target by hand or foot. 100% de in a team that at half time was going at a woeful 52%. And before anyone says that his kicks were all easy crosses remember several were high risk 40 metre arrows that picked out teammates and set up forward attacks (besides half our team can't make those easy 30 metre crosses). Another positive is that he took a couple of good contested marks (the second one at an important time), something he rightly has been knocked for for not doing. So all in all an improved game from omac. But i'm sure, with petty among our best in the vfl that if goody thinks omac is the liability some think he is then he will drop him. We'll see Thursday night.4 points

I like that Demonland allows Melbourne supporters to express their views (apart from extremist, defamatory and derogatory comments). But this thread is the most aggressive I've ever seen. I'm both amazed and dismayed by some of the arguments. Mostly, though, I'm disappointed that anyone can defend a man punching another person. It doesn't matter whether that person was intellectually disabled or not. It doesn't matter that the Hawks supporter caused the attacker to lose his beer. What does matter is that a single punch can kill or maim someone for life. Everyone, do yourselves a favour and have a look at the James Macready-Bryan Foundation. I don't know him or anyone around him, but his story should remind us all of what's really important. And while you're there, think about making a donation.4 points

Disgraceful attitude. Men in this country think punching is OK. If the Melbourne supporter couldn't deal with someone (whether disabled or not) knocking his beer out of his hand without resorting to violence, he's an embodiment of a cultural problem we have. If your response is "who cares", you're not helping.4 points
