  1. Where we once had the stab pass we now have the Clarry Pass. Low, flat, hard, fast, direct, accurate onto the chest, over long distance and performed at full speed. Others (Salem) can pass the ball perfectly but none with as much authority and class. The kicks to Neal-Bullen, Garlett and Tracca as well to kick his goal were as attractive and effective as those from the past. To go with his ball winning ability, hand passing, tackling, running and field kicking, are there any other so far unrevealed sublime skills to come? What a joy to watch.

  3. http://m.afl.com.au/news/2018-07-15/thanks-razor-dees-lowfive-of-gratitude#/ Anyone concerned that Brayshaw might leave should have those fears allayed by these comments: "How could you leave this team?" he said with a wide grin. "I keep talking about it, but the last two years I haven't played a lot of footy and the 10 minutes after a game is the golden 10 minutes I missed the most. "I love all my teammates and I love the place, so hopefully (my new contract) gets sorted sooner rather than later."

  4. Here is the latest view of the run home for the top 10 teams. This week I have included Lions as one of the teams opponents will need to show extra respect. The Port loss to Freo shows there are absolutely no gimmies. I reckon we can make the top 4!! Yes the pressure is on us to win enough games but there is equal pressure on Magpies and Swans who also have a nasty draw. They each might easily drop 3 or 4 of the last 6. The most likely to drop from the top 4 is Magpies?. They play 4 of the winning teams from the weekend and the other 2 lost by a kick. Demons and the Giants are in the box seat to pinch their top 4 spot. My confidence comes from our 3rd qtr on Saturday. Reading Oliver and Brayshaw comments on their talk around the ground and with Max before center bounces and watching how they played was inspired. I reckon that quarter was galvanising for the team. We have played our most consistent and our best footy over the last month with two small losses and two huge wins. That consistency also gives me confidence in what we can do. Last year 15 games made it to top 4. This year 14 plus a good percentage may do the trick. Yes, one week at a time but I now dare to dream!

  6. This weekend is a personal milestone for me in that it will be 200 weeks since I last drank alcohol. I've told friends I'll have a beer when Melbourne wins the flag. After such a long time off it, I think I'd be less of a two-pot screamer and more of a Cadbury's (a glass and a half) or even an Omo (less than a third of a cup).

  8. So you have always thought Jones was a crap player. Fair enough if that is your opinion. I think most on here and the MFC and the players he played with and the footy public would disagree. But that is ok. When he won his Blueys did you post on here that he had beaten no one? Have you called for his dumping regularly? I am happy to question players ability but I don’t agree with personal attacks and rewriting history.

  13. Thanks for all the correspondence from Russia, DJ ... we've thoroughly enjoyed the accounts of your travels & exploits. You made the tournament feel much more alive for us onlookers. The whole event was great viewing throughout and the best team won. France had the toughest path having to beat Argentina, Uruguay, Belgium and finally Croatia to win the prize ... a well deserved winner. Australia took it right up to France as well. And we have a winner in the tipping comp (Demonland's version of the Ballon d'Or!) Well done DZ ... you got the margin correct in the final as well! 14. Well picked DZ even if it took a howler by the keeper to make it so. While not quite hitting the highs of champagne football it was an entertaining match. I thought Croatia's tactics of soft fouling early and often went a long way to stopping France from getting any breakaways. Croatia should be proud. They played a good game but France were the best team of the tournament. Thoroughly enjoyable world cup and my time in Moscow and Kazan will always be a highlight for me. The Russian people in the end made it their world cup and it was a great one. Thanks to you all on this forum .... it's been great to swap thoughts with you all. Mbappe the fist teenager to score in a WC final since Pele... wow that's a big burden to carry. I will always feel lucky to have seen that France v Argentina game where he announced himself to the world. Now for a new coach and the Asian Cup.

  15. It's not part of footy when he knew how serious it became last year, he should have reported it straight away if in fact he didn't. Just ridiculous. (not you, him). He needs to stop being the tough guy and think of the club and team first and foremost, he didnt last year either.

  17. Someone said to me, that JKH, like players who are given a chance, often play with the fear that a mistake could see them dumped. This clearly would restrict their natural instinct and ability to play well. On that basis, without any better player being available, he gets another game.

  21. In his very short career he has shown he can play all over the ground. But with Lever out, he should continue to be used more often than not across half back - he has looked so at home there and his reading of the play and marking ability are elite. A godsend.

  31. I'd prefer that we don't go with Tyson as I just don't think he fits our side going forward. He's been overtaken by others (Brayshaw, Oliver, Harmes etc) and he isn't clean enough or quick enough to play anywhere else but in those positions that are already filled. I'd rather see us play Petracca more through the middle and bring in someone like Kent to play forward with stints through the middle as I think it gives us something different.

  32. Not as many changes required this week but still plenty of thought for match committee. The Cats down there are a seriously difficult proposition and we will only get free kicks in our back half. Further to that Joel will be manic and we don't have Viney to counter him. Then there is his niggling brother who will wear Angus like a glove - the first time he has had to counter such a tag. On top of that they will most likely dump Buzza and maybe either bring back Smith to try and negate Gawny with some rough stuff or alternatively play Henderson as a forward. As to us, we have to decide four things. 1) Will the coach stick with Frosty? As most of you know I love Frosty attack on the ball and unless we plan to send Hoges or T-Mac back, he is our only tall defender apart from Oscar capable of playing on a big and playing our game-style. But he went against team rules in the second term with his kick-in and there was enough choice errors for Goody to throw the book at him (way more than his past indiscretions which were pretty minor in comparison). Hopefully Goody realises that Frosty is our best chance come finals and his speed is critical in a side trying to use Lewis and Vince down back. The options if Goody jettisons Frosty again are 1) Pedo - In form down back in VFL and we all know he does the right things, but he ain't no racehorse. 2) Joel Smith - if he is fit then he has to come in ... surely. But can he cope with Henderson or Stanley? 3) Fritsch - he was trialled down there for a reason, but as with Joel Smith, can he cope with a big boy? My guess: Goody will drop Frosty and go with Joel Smith, or if Joel is still too sore, then Pedo gets the gig. My wish: No change. 2) Will the coach stick with JKH? It was an interesting choice v Dogs but JKH's VFL form was very worthy. But will he cope with the pressure of a night game at a rabid Catland. He may also have to pick up Megnola, Kelly or even Duncan at times, so it's a huge ask. This will either make him as a player or will be his last game for the club. My guess: Goody will stick with him. My wish: I'm sorry but I am not a fan of JKH on a wing or as a forward, although I can see some potential in him as a defender with clean hands and good kicking skills. Also this is not the week to bring in Baker, although I have warmed to him and with Billy now out and no sign of Jayden back for a bit, Ronald McDonald is our best chance of providing the run we need for finals. But we can wait another week on Baker and likewise VDB. 3) Will the coach stick with three pacey forwards - Hannan, Garlett and Spargo? Obviously this is a bit of a selection luxury that worked on Saturday because of who we were playing and might work on a dry day at Geelong - but we are playing at night in the middle of winter. My guess: Goody will stick with all three. My wish: Unlike Goody i can't see all three in same side come finals. Two yes. This is the week for another grunt forward such as Bugg or Kent - neither of whom dominated in VFL on weekend. 4) Is this the game for Dom Tyson? The answer is yes because it will be greasy and at night and will be a tackle-fest. His inclusion will take pressure off Angus and allow Oliver to play forward for even more. My guess: Dom has barely played in the middle all season so why would Goody change now - even with Viney out. My view: This is the game for either Dom or Buggy. But as we know Dom isn't a natural at chasing down blokes, so he can't play the forward pressure role as well as others and if Goody won't play him in the middle, then it's a pointless swap. My view: If I was picking the team it would be JKH out and Joel Smith in because he is more physical and quicker, but I am not. And given the likely niggling game, I'd even consider dropping one our small forwards for Bugg or Tyson (only if used in the middle). My guess is that we will bring back Joel Smith and Frosty will be dropped and if Joel is still too sore, then Pedo will replace Frosty. What will most likely happen is that we will be hard at it most of the night and lead for quite a bit of it but Joel Selwood will have a huge last term and with scores level Trac will be pinged for a high tackle on him late in the game. The ball will be moved down the ground where Henderson will nudge Joel Smith under the contest allowing TomaHawk to mark. He will turn quickly and spot Parfitt or Kelly or even Ablett 2m clear of Jordy and it will be game over.

  33. OUR FRIEND THE WIND by KC from Casey The Casey Demons continued their winning run against Footscray on Sunday to make it nine in a row after a hard fought battle in a wind affected game at Casey Fields The winning result was however, not as easy and straightforward as one would have anticipated especially after some withdrawals from the team through injuries. At half time, the Demons were staring at defeat for the first time in two and a half months after the Bulldogs took full advantage of the northerly wind blowing down the ground, kicking four goals in time on to take a 20 point lead into the sheds at the main break. But it is not for nothing that the Demons are sitting in second place on the VFL premiership ladder and they showed their class by holding the Dogs scoreless in the premiership quarter while they piled on five goals four behinds of their own and then they narrowly outscored their opponent in the last to win by 15 points. Footscray, which is battling with a log jam of teams for a finals berth were never one to be taken lightly, given that they are one of only two clubs this season to have beaten ladder leaders Richmond. So while the home team scored the first goal through James Munro, the determined Doggies defended strongly against the wind and held them to a lead of only a goal. After an arm-wrestle for much of the first half of the second term, Footscray edged ahead to lead by 26 points in the shadows of half time before a handy Angus Scott major against the run of play gave the Demons some breathing space. Sam Weideman who had been a little off target in the first half came to the fore with the first goal after the main break and two more in the last quarter. That was enough to see the team home particularly as our friend the wind decided to moderate a little and the Bulldogs' legs seemed to tire as well and the game came to a spluttering halt with the Dees well in control. When the heat was on, Casey was well served in defence by Jay Lockhart, Declan Keilty and the Wagner brothers and skipper Jack Hutchins. Cam Pedersen was strong throughout and Dom Tyson had far too much skill and ball winning ability in the middle for the Demons. Aaron vandenBerg backed up his excellent first up return game with another solid performance and will be challenging soon for a place in the Melbourne senior side. Next up for Casey is an away game against Geelong VFL at GMHBA Stadium when second place and a home final could well be determined. No matter what happens from here on, if anyone says "we don't deserve to play finals" as if implying we deserve it any less than Geelong, Port, Hawthorn or any of those other clubs around our mark, I'll know they're full of it. 44. Port beat Richmond a few weeks ago. They're not terrible. They're just inconsistent. Collingwood hasn't beaten anyone of note other than us. Port is inconsistent. Sydney was a kick away from losing three on the trot. Geelong lost to the Dogs. Hawthorn lost twice to Brisbane. Richmond can't win away from Melbourne. West Coast lost to Essendon. As @ProDee has said numerous times, there are no stand-out sides, there are just slightly more consistent sides (Richmond, West Coast) than others. If we make the 8, then we deserve it, by definition. Can't believe how many times that needs to be said. However, if we lose to all of Geelong, Adelaide, Sydney, WC and GWS, we won't make it (11 wins is not enough), so we are going to have to beat at least one, probably two, and possibly three, of those five to make it. So, if we make it, we'll have scalps, and we will deserve it. Indeed. Essendon's beaten Port, Adelaide, Geelong, GWS and West Coast, but will struggle to make the finals. They're not going to end the year saying "oh well, we beat those top 8 sides so that's good enough for us". In fact, us last year is a perfect example of it. We beat Adelaide, West Coast, Essendon and Port last year - four finalists. But when we missed the finals, no one said "well we deserved it because we beat top 8 sides". If you finish in the top 8, you deserve it. End of story.

Someone wants to discuss a player...but not in your manner of approval then we're all potting them. Quite frankly what you consider worthy or otherwise is not the measure of what everyone else might. You don't want to discuss Jones...in his own right. Fine. But please cease with your almighty idea anyone really cares or that YOU are the arbiter of this or anything here. We are a group. And at the moment the group is discussing Jones...in any number of views. You're welcome to contribute or not. Not because I or anyone says or thinks so...but because it's a group discussion.
