Went to training with my 2 year old son, so may have missed a few things, but hally to try and answer questions where I can. Hogan trained for the first 2/3 of the session, sometimes in the main group, sometimes doing things off to the side. Left the track earlier though. was told he WILL play though. The training itself was pretty basic, but they were working pretty hard and trying to work on some specifics. Could see they were working on their kicking skills, practicing all types ignored kicks in a drill. Also spent a fair bit of time in their groups, doing specific work on their areas. Such as backs doing 1 on 1 stuff and practicing punching/ marks etc. was really impressed with Oscar in those drills. Surprisingly. Jetta was the best small defender in the 1 on 1's. the final drill was more game based with 10 on 10 or so. Practicing pressing up as defenders and trying to cause turnovers, while the forwards were working on quick ball movement, short/ hard passes through the middle and getting out the back or a quick goal. They had to work really hard in this drill as there wasn't much rest. Overall was a simple session, but I was impressed with a few. Notably Oscar on defence, weideman also showed me a bit. Looked much bigger and more athletic to me. Of the current players in the side, I like harmes and petracca with their speed and power and skill and fritsch trained well too. Finally, spoke to my club source. He said that they won't change much this week. Most likely ins are frost and Kent if anything, but they need to find someone to drop (i know many of us have opinions on who that should be) and some of the borderline guys did well last week. Guys such as bugg/ Wagner etc. will always be the ones on the block. Also heard that they are very excited with weideman and his progress, so when he is fitter (considering he missed some of the pre season) he will come in as a forward / ruck. Apologies for any mistakes as this was done on my phone while the son sleeps!!53 points

I got down there today. Yokozuna did a wonderful summary. Here are some little observations from me: I watched the re-hab group very closely. They worked with Crossy, Garlo (who did a lot of the work the boys) and a few others. This group consisted of Viney, Tommy Mac, Patty McKenna and Jesse. Jesse looked a bit ginger and seemed to be conscious of a groin/upper leg issue. He moved pretty slowly but later joined the main group and looked okay. Viney and McDonald worked for about 45 minutes. They did some dynamic stretching, run throughs, ladder work, kicking, shots at goal and some interval running. It was far from intense and both seemed to be in good spirits. Viney had on these Nike shoes with the most cushioning in a runner I had ever seen. Weid is doing all the work with the ruck group now. He spent a lot of time with Flip and Kingy working with Greg Stafford doing agility stuff. Benny Matthews took the session. It was in beautiful conditions and the mood was very upbeat.24 points

Also, both McDonald and Viney WERE running. Hibberd also didn't do the whole session. Both he and hogan were being looked after but still did some of the main stuff.18 points

The guys have covered most of what I've seen. There was a little something about the Weid today. He dived for a mark that ended up trapped between his legs and it looked athletic. He just seems a bit stronger without being bulky or slow. Keen to see him string consistent games in the VFL and then push for an AFL return. Also liked the look of Balic leading and marking. Quick off the mark and jumps at the ball. He has upside. Frost did a lot of things well, including some nice kicks in the match simulation. Gus was using his left and I hope he's encouraged to do so. Becoming a reliable dual sided player is the weapon he needs in his game.17 points

Great news, if North Melbourne can do it then so can we. Really proud of the club for doing this.17 points

I find it amusing that we’re only two games in and people (posters here included) thought Lever was going to slot into a new team and have the same impact straight away he had at Adelaide. Adjusting to all the differences that come with playing with a new team is going to take time. The kid will be a gun for us. You’ll always have people who want players in Levers position to fail. Haters gonna hate, hate, hate, hate, hate. Baby I’m gonna shake, shake, shake, shake, shake.14 points

Very pleasing news. Hopefully there is a plan to minimise or ideally negate the impact to the bottom line. The argument that this does nothing to address the social issue because someone else will just pick up the licenses is just rubbish. The best way to initiate change is to lead it, and that's what the MFC have done. Let's see how many other AFL clubs are still operating these venues in 3 years time.10 points

I think many people on this site have amnesia about what Pedersen actually did in the first two rounds. His passing, body work seemingly goes unnoticed by many here..8 points

pre-emptive move - all clubs are preparing for the afl stopping clubs owning pokies licenses, whilst at the same time taking in excess of $10m from crownbet to be official wagering partner, plus all the residuals from the other gambling companies the afl hypocritical? well, i never...6 points

Fantastic news ..... whatever you say the continued reliance on this form of revenue is unsustainable from a social responsibility aspect6 points

Out: Bugg, Wagner In: Kent, Frost I’d happily drop Lewis off at advanced hair and leave him there but he won’t get dropped. It’s a shame for Brayshaw that this bloke who’s knees turn to jelly under any pressure is taking his spot in the team Melksham is on thin ice too, but he’s more of a chance of snagging goals than Bugg. I’m more of a chance to kick a goal than Bugg and my legs don’t work. So Kent comes in, applies the pressure and aggro Bugg does, but also hits the scoreboard. Seen enough of Wagner. Enough to see he’s not better than Frost. They both clang it up and do silly [censored]. But Frost is bigger, stronger, faster and I like him flying around the G. Also just feels a better fit for North’s forward line. If these changes don’t happen it is unexceptable and I shall watch the game with a stern look on my face.6 points

Losing a $3M annual profit from gaming means the capital needed to replace it has to be in the order of $30 - $60M.!! I’m thinking there will have to be an announcement of a new training base for the club paid for by the AFL to just allow us to break even. And then there still remains the question of on going revenue to allow us to support the side financially into the future.5 points

I think it would be safe to assume that there is a bigger game happening. I am confident that PJ and our CFO and the Board are not all idiots.5 points

Makes a difference. Great from a social aspect but the obvious question remains - How to we supplement the revenue? Below are the teams for JLT 1 against the round 2 side that NM fielded. Those in bold in the round 2 list are those that played against us. Surely the club wouldn't be so stupid as to give this guy another contract without seeing him play at least six VFL games this season. Coming up to 4 years on AFL lists, and hasn't come close to playing AFL football in that time. McKenna is number 1 on the chopping block for me, just ahead of Vandenberg & Kennedy-Harris. Patience and loyalty are one thing, but you can't just keep blokes around forever if they aren't playing.4 points

They don't have to find other forms of gambling , the most happiest people are Woolworths share holder, the pokies will still be at the Leigh club just different owners, this does nothing for problem gamblers, just puts money in a big companies bank account, the hawks will never get rid of their pokies, knowing Kennet the hawks might buy your licence.4 points
-
that's true dof, but it doesn't mean there will be less gaming machines out there. the same number of lives and families will be wrecked. the licences will just end up owned by someone else all it means is that the mfc won't be playing a part in it nor profiting from it4 points

Jackson is a very smart operator as we know. I am 100% sure that he already has some revenue supplements lined up to replace pokies. There will be more sponsorship opportunities as a result, from “socially responsible” companies who wouldn’t sponsor clubs at the moment due to their involvement in gambling. Good on the club.4 points

All well and good but reminds me of that idiot that shut down power stations BEFORE an alternative was in place !! Need to get this right or bottom line will be shredded. Still...the club seems to have a better handle on the register these days. Hope this goes well.4 points

really? I've been following this team for over 20 years and i'm still finding it hard to understand how they play.4 points

O Mac is developing nicely, he has led the most distance covered for us in both games so far. They are running him around a fair bit so far and for him to limit their output has been nothing short of impressive.4 points

By trying to limit the mismatches. Numerous times in Hobart last year Jetta was left one out with Brown. Realistically, there’s not many defenders that can stop/spoil Brown when he can mark the ball at its highest point. Zach Guthrie was left to man Roughhead 2-3 times on Monday in the last quarter and Chris Scott mentioned on 360 that was not the plan. A breakdown occurred somewhere in the defensive structure, we need to limit them.4 points

I’m not so sure Lever plays like a Tall. I think Lever plays more like a Hibberd than a KPD. I think it is absolutely critical to bring in Frost so Lever can go do his unaccountable, sometimes creative, sometimes big defensive spoil type thing.4 points

It was a typical Lewis game, outstanding when we needed him in last quarter and a couple of stupid brain fades, wouldn't be Lewis4 points
