For the benefit of those who can’t access the Facebook album, here are a few shots taken by my son Liam at yesterday’s AFLW training (posted here because it seems the AFLW forum gets very little traffic).13 points

Couple of notes from this morning Balic just has a minor niggle Weed hopefully with main group after Maroochydoore To the knockers, great one on one drills today with Omac and Frost, probably a draw, Omac not outmuscled, coaches encouraging ferocity in the contest Pics later on Insta and a lot later on here8 points

With the MFC I tend to go with Occam's razor - someone in the PR / IT dept accidentally deleted his profile while downloading porn on a lunch break and is now pretending they know nothing about it. Still it's nice to know that we are a united group. We all panic over nothing together.3 points

I watched Rodney Grinter hand out more than a few 'punishments' over several years. Whilst 'stupid' behaviour, we still loved him and appreciated the intense pressure he applied.3 points

And what about the property deal where he and Dodoro pocketed 15 mil between them off land that their mate Justin Madden rezoned? How convenient.3 points

My bet would be a lot ADC..... Their transformation during 2007 was almost overnight. The demolition of Richmond that year was something i will never forget. But if stimulants were involved, we will never know now...it’s too long ago3 points

We chased McKenna for a reason, just had a rotten run, he has a year, they will reevaluate then, he is rated within the club Same with AVB, has a year contract, we all know what he can bring, if they can get him back As I have stated before, with injury these days the Club does it properly, joked with Boxing Coach that he was the leash for Viney, to ensure he only did what he was supposed to Of the rehab on Monday Kent - full shoulder reco, so no contact work, probably knows the longer in rehab further down the pecking order Jones - has had a calf niggle Petracca - same, niggle in the leg, not sure where, think the quad Joel Smith - building back after a couple of serious injuries Tim Smith - same Balic - was in rehab, didn't seem restricted or uncomfortable, so probably reported a niggle Weed - coming back from ankle op3 points

In my recollection, team in general played like crap against North and we probably didn't really deserve to win. But Bugg did have a number of fairly regulation shorts at goal which could have (and really should have) swung the game in our favor, which has stuck in my mind ever since (it still really gates with me that we lost to North twice last year, when they were crap for most of the year excpt pretty much against us). And he certainly had the yips for a big part of last season. But overall, I think he has the ability to reliably hit the scoreboard as demonstrated by his goal kicking in his first year with us in 2016, when he kicked 7 goals 2 and always looked sure and sound in front of goal.2 points

Best 22 no doubt. The side lost a lot of its intensity once Tomas was out of the side2 points

Agreed. Also when fit he is very mobile for his size but not in the same league as any genuine midfielder. Midfielders need to be agile and fleet of foot. Jesse has struggled with fitness and injury concerns. He seems very fit this year but how will his body stand-up once the season gets underway. He will not be much use in the midfield with any tightness or niggles. I always saw Jesse as a roaming forward, a bit in the Wayne Carey mold. A guy who could use his strength and agility to pop up all over the forward line and at times be a diversion for others. Will be interesting to see how he is used but first of all Hogan needs to put together games without interruption from injury.2 points

Looks like we will get a rundown on players for the next few weeks. Today Baker to Bugg http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2018-01-04/list-update-baker-to-bugg Its interesting to get the coaches of view of player progress. Some extracts that caught my eye: Goodwin: Oskar Baker has demonstrated some elite fundamentals, from a kicking perspective within our program. I like the sound of the elite kicking - just what we need. Goodwin: Harley Balic has been outstanding at training. He won one of our training ‘player of the week’ awards. I wouldn't be surprised if he got a game earlier than later. (Interesting to know we have 'player of the week' award for training). Goodwin: Angus Brayshaw is starting to emerge within the group, in terms of his training standards. Determined young fella - slow and steady will be good for his confidence Goodwin: Tomas Bugg has been working closely with the forwards. Sounds like he is keeping his head down working to regain respect. Admire him for that.1 point

Totally [censored] off he has a minor niggle, was as noted, looking really good as the pre season progressed Think personally he was told to ease into the training and then started to do extra1 point

In Goodwin’s words: Harley Balic Harley arrived at the club in the off-season from Fremantle. After settling in, he’s been outstanding at training. He won one of our training ‘player of the week’ awards, which is a credit to him and his development in the time that he’s been involved in our program. We’re really looking forward to seeing him play in 2018.1 point

His goalkicking killed us in one or two games (the North one in particular?) But I think he started turning it around and he has shown he can hit the scoreboard. Some were calling for him to be dropped but others argued it was worth persevering. A few comments doesn't make it universal.1 point

Not sure I can equate him with Grinter, but we played much better last year when he was on song! If he can get his agresion at the ball back and kick straiter or more composed. May not be the AA champion but our opponents will crap themselves when the ball gets near him. My pick along with O Mac to improve and be a regular best 22 Go Dees how long to go now to first game ?1 point

Grinter certainly applied himself and his consequences to the game outcomes. He was an enigma for the team and for all opponents. With great skills, mobility, excellent run and kicking 'to position' or up the ground, he redeemed himself for his aggressive style many times. But aggression was only a small part - it really was 'drive' and 'driven' was a mantra that Grinter exuded. Bugsy is a different player, a different athlete to Grinter but displays some characteristics of Grinter's drive and enthusiasm. This can do no harm to the team at all if the 'stupid' behaviours are controlled. There is no reason to suggest that these are not under control at this point. He trains hard and shows contrition for what occurred as a 'rush of blood' last season. We need him.1 point

The sting went out of our season immediately after that punch. Tomas brings an edge to the group. That's why he will be in our 22 at the start of 2018. But now they will come after him, harder and in numbers. It will be interesting to see what he is really made of.1 point

Jack was singularly responsible for his drop in trade value We got market price after 9 years or erratic and poor perfomances and a percieved lack of commitment Good luck Jack at Port I, for one ,no longer cares what he does1 point

Posted this in the Training Thread but also relevant here: Viney is super human!! If his foot is ready there will be no stopping him next year.1 point

Working for a small corporate who does sponsor an AFL team and having worked at a medium corp who sponsored the Hawks there are so many layers to these kinds of things. Is it a brand only play? If so how much is the spend/over how many years? How long is the season so the brand is in play for as long as possible? Can you use those $$ in other ways to drive more brand or sign ups? Can you get more eyeballs through a billboard on Citylink or more from digital spend than this sponsorship? How big is the member base/how much access to them do you get to pitch your product (whats the reach)? Is the club on the up and potential for new members in yrs 2 and 3 etc. Does the product you have align/can it be sold to the members/fans? What kind of acquisitions do you think you can get out of the members and other fans who may see your product? The old company did well out of Hawks, they signed up just before hawks won the first of the 4 flags. Lower cost, lower CPA for first couple of years, decent take up by members with an ok CPA. How well do you work with the club? We have an awesome relationship with our club who work hard to provide value to the partner. In our case what kinds of values does the club have and do they align with or exceed our values? We are constantly pitched to by NRL clubs... no fkn wwwaaayyyy mate! What kind of access can you get to other sponsors/partners/anyone else associated with the club or code? etc etc It is pretty subjective especially if it is a brand play only (but clubs provide "value metrics" you need to pick apart), acquisitions and CPAs are easy to measure.1 point

Looks like they're easing him back in after 6 months off. Hopefully that means they've learnt from previous foot injuries at the club destroying careers. We need him fit and firing during finals next year.1 point
