  2. Bernie gets a $1,000 fine for a blindsided hit with the umpire - deemed 'careless contact'. Guthrie gets off for pushing the umpire out of the way and he gets off - deemed "It was the view of the panel the contact was not unreasonable in the circumstances" http://www.afl.com.au/news/2017-05-15/match-review-panel-full-statement-round-eight I'm convinced the MRP has it in for Demon players.

  3. Clean sweep of the coaches votes! 10 Viney 8 Hibberd 5 Oliver 5 Petracca 2 Vince That is a seriously dominant performance by our midfield (and Hibberd). Well done guys. Btw Oliver is now 3rd on the leaderboard with 36 votes, to Sloane (42) and Yeo (43), leading such luminaries as Ablett, Bontempelli, Selwood and on it goes.

  4. Honestly, I thought Bernie was always going to cop a fine for that. But the fact that Guthrie, who literally pushed the umpire out his way with force gets nothing, is an absolute farce.

  7. Given that none of the feral crowd, players or umpires picked up on it, I'm going with it being an optical illusion.

  8. My understanding is that the area directly behind the ump is the 'protected area' you should stay out of. The umpire moved directly backwards into this area. Vince was in there, and he wasn't pushed in by anyone else, so I can't see how it's surprising he is receiving a fine.

  11. Melbourne player with goal of the week ??? No that doesn't sound right ? Let's instead just drool over another Eddie betts goal, or show Monday love for Joel Selwood again wearing a headband (cue gerard Whateley) , or downplay Cotchins jumper punch , or lament Cyril's bad luck at that knee in the back that went wrong... media are so predictable

  12. with Hogan out though both Pederson and Tmac went forward with great success kicking 5 or so between them. So I think if we try to replace Weeds with Hoges and still play a similar gamestyle and let Hogan fit into our structure rather than constantly waving, pointing, gesticulating and telling everyone what to do, we might be improved. If he tries to take over the forward line and set things up his way maybe the forward line may go back to the non-functioning outfit we've seen at times. As for Hannan I thought his second half was terrific against the crows. He got up the ground a lot more and used his speed to advantage. I thought it was his best half of football he's played for the club and I think he's just working out how to be useful to the team. I'm pretty sure the coaching staff would be happy enough with him to stay in the side.

  13. A MURDER OF CROWS by George on the Outer The collective noun for a flock of Crows is a “murder” (please don't ask me why) and MURDER was exactly what the Demons did to the top-of-the-ladder Adelaide Crows by playing the type of emphatic and decisive football that coach Simon Goodwin has been talking about since his inauguration. The “type of football we want to play … our brand …” Well it all came together on a near balmy Adelaide night as Melbourne ran out 41 point victors to send a deathly silence around the Adelaide Oval among the 47k+ people who attended the game. The poor locals were witnessing murder committed right in front of their eyes as a relentless, aggressive and committed Demons put their beloved Crows to the sword. Murder happened, but it was the team of assassins that kept killing any hope or resurgence that the Crows may have mounted. None more so than 200 gamer Bernie Vince who was assigned a tagging role on the dangerous Rory Sloane who probably heads the voting to date in the Brownlow. Our man Vince held him to a miserable three possessions to ¾ time! For the final quarter he was taken from the middle of the ground and relegated to half back, where he managed to pick up a further 8 touches, but only because Bernie was no longer tagging him. Meanwhile, Vince accidentally took out one of the umpires for good measure but hopefully nothing should come of that. In the middle, Clayton Oliver was intimidating and causing mayhem with the remainder of the Adelaide midfield racking up another 30 possession game. Critically he kicked a goal from an impossible angle in the pocket when the Crows were within a goal. Another dagger to the heart, as Melbourne then piled on nine unanswered goals from late in the second quarter to the end of the third. But they didn’t stop there with a five goal final quarter effort including two early in the term to put the game beyond any doubt. Yet this was the Adelaide side that came into the game with only a solitary defeat for the season. The Adelaide side that had two tall rucks in Jacobs and Jenkins (with another in Lynch if needed ) against Melbourne’s Cam Pedersen standing at a mere 193cm. Jacobs managed 74 hit outs yet Pedersen nullified his direction and forced him to drop the ball close to his feet where the Demon mids feasted. The result - Melbourne won the clearances both in the middle and around the ground. Pedersen topped off his gargantuan effort with three goals of his own and he had some willing helpers in Tom McDonald and Jack Watts when he needed a rest. They caused enough trouble on their own as Tom moved forward and finished with two goals, showing his strength in marking and contesting by beating his opponents comprehensively when challenged. It was a day on which coaching was truly a stand out for Melbourne. The Vince tag was critical and it denied the Crows much drive. Atkins as another mid was left unmarked for the whole night. The coaches had obviously determined that he was not as much of a threat and it was preferable to have that additional Melbourne player around the contest. No ruck, no full-forward for the game, and yet this was probably a game performance equal to and probably better than the win against Hawthorn last year. In Simon Goodwin, it looks like we have a “good-un” Tom up forward, Oscar left down back to take on Jenkins was another piece of brilliance as he simply ran off him and spoiled, Jenkins having really “soft” hands in marking contests. When that wasn’t happening Frost and Hibberd, in particular, had a dream run and we are now seeing the same insights that Goodwin had when he convinced Hibberd to leave the Bombers. Twenty-eight touches to ¾ time and 34 for the game from half-back was incredible. But it is his reliable left foot that hits targets 50+ metres away and in tight situations that simply changes the momentum of the game. Then the backs have Salem and Jetta to clean up any scraps. Jetta assigned Betts for the night gave him a miserly nine touches. Not too many others can claim a record like that. Salem with 31 touches deep in defence was another stalwart and also with a lethal foot and surety of hand never wastes a disposal. Have I mentioned Jack Viney? Well, he was back to his best with 31 touches including 15 contested, and when you check that Oliver had 15 contested, as well as Petracca with 15 of his own, then Jones with 11, it is easy to understand the absolute dominance that Melbourne had around the ball. This all combined to turn Adelaide Oval into a crime scene and come the end of the gamea message had been sent to the rest of the competition. If Melbourne sustains the same level of intensity and game style in coming games, in the absence of its AA ruckman and one of the best up and coming forwards, then more murders might occur in the future including a long-awaited Kangaroo cull next week. 19. there is one footage (front on) where the ball seems to change direction round about the time it passes the right hand goal post. i wondered whether it might have been a video artifact, like the video had a stutter. if it did clip the inside of right hand post then it would be hard to explain how it then continued to the right of the left hand post, given the angle of the kick. given no-one claimed it clipped the goal post at the time i'm inclined to think it was a visual trick as the ball revolution altered (due to the banana effect) or that part of the video had a technical artifact event

  20. For those that don't follow Titus O'Reiley here's an extract from his " The Monday Kneejerk Reaction" enjoy:) Adelaide (66) v Melbourne (107) Clayton Oliver may be the greatest person who has ever lived. I’m a bit biased, but the idea of Melbourne having a real football star is something I thought would never happen again, like having someone love me. While love remains elusive, a sure-handed clearance machine has arrived, and I am finally starting to believe that the Demons are heading somewhere that isn’t painful. The Crows were meant to bounce back from a terrible outing in Tasmania and thump the Dees but instead struggled to handle opponents not letting them do whatever they want to do. Rory Sloane was tagged by Bernie Vince, and Sloane’s teammates took one look at Vince’s aggression and said, ‘You’re on your own there Rory.’ Time and time again, the Crows players couldn’t handle the defensive pressure of the Demons. Neither could the umps, with Vince taking out one of them and the fill in going down with cramp. It meant the game got down to two field umpires, instantly halving the number of umpiring mistakes. Does this mean the Dees have finally clicked and the Crows are done? In this crazy season who knows? This season is drunk. - See more at: https://titusoreily.com/afl/monday-knee-jerk-reaction-afl-round-eight-1#sthash.IXqLcwDs.dpuf

  22. Dunno how many times I've tuned in to a game on TV or radio with us up, and then the team proceed to leak goals and the match. It's like they know I'm there. But this time I tuned in during the second. Crows kicked two and that was the night for them. Some very un-Melbourne things in that win: * Leaking goals at end of quarter -- this time we got the late goals (Crows had their chances but fluffed them) * After the game is iced, letting the opp get some easy junk time goals to make the win look less convincing and hurt our percentage. But we won it going away Second half, every goal they got, we answered quickly Those things make this game seem more of a turning point than our other previous turning points. GO DEMONS!!!!

  25. In his first game against GWS in Round 1 last year, Oliver had 7 clearances and 22 disposals from 58% game time. How on earth could you have thought Oliver was anything like Toumpas after that debut? Sounds like MFCSS still pervades that mind of yours, mate.

  28. Correct which is why it isn't surprising Bernie got a fine even tho he was blindsided and it was the umpires fault. The problem is Guthrie literally manhandled the umpire and deliberately pushed him out of the way but was cleared. The inconsistency of interpretation is the issue. Which is what riles me as our players seem to get the raw deal more often than not.

  31. I've seen enough DX ... we get a good run with injuries and we'll get to 13 wins. Winning the way we did on Sat night is worth more than 1 win. The whole squad should be brimming with confidence now. Collectively our midfield can perform at A class. We might hit a wall for a short time but every team will experience that with the type of footy that is being played this season.

  32. I agree Adam. The critical thing for me was that we got things back on our terms mid-quarter. When we've regained the initiative in earlier games, it has generally been at the breaks, when the coaches have re-set things for the next stanza. To wrest the momentum back mid-quarter was a sign to me that our list and on-field leadership is learning and maturing. Hope I'm right!

  42. I think Hogan is a massive asset but we need to work out how to get everything ticking with him in the side. On the weekend, we played a four man forward line at times. If one of those 4 was Hogan, I think he would have had a field day with that much space. He is a great one on one mark, we need to work out how to isolate him. I don't share the sentiment that we are better without him. If we hunt and tackle like we did on Saturday night and move the ball quickly and with decent efficiency, Hogan will cause massive headaches for any back line.

  43. Talking about whether Hogan has a physical illness or not sits uneasy with me. None of us know the situation and we shouldn't speculate at all after what hes been through. I just want Hogan to be happy again and enjoying playing footy with his best mates.

  44. Absolutely no chance. There will be a token minute or two on his football career. He might even mention he played for Melbourne. It will be about his gambling addiction, as Febey's was about his alcahol and drug issues and Balls was about snotting Terry The Tan Wallace. It shits me to tears. It's the same format every time - brief mention of footy career, then Mike apologises for revisiting whatever the controversy* is or was, or promises to just briefly touch on it and that's it. The whole show is then about said issue. They then return to the player's football career in the last minute of the show, if that. *There are, of course, former players who see 'Open Mike' as an opportunity to draw attention to their issue/cause and rightfully so, but there are others who would like to be remembered for their footy.

  49. After getting all my uni work done a little earlier than expected tonight, I’m going in for the replay now. Giving the first half a miss though, as I want to get to bed at a somewhat reasonable hour and I don’t really want to watch those awful umpiring calls again... 3rd Quarter: Good tackle from Weiderman in the first 30 seconds of the 2nd half, and another from him 1 minute later So glad Hunt didn’t break his jaw going in like that on Sam Jacobs, but he knocked the ball loose and we gained possession to get the goal that sparked the run Clearance by Petracca and quick entry gives us a 1-on-1 which McDonald marks and goals with the first of his floater goals Mark of the night from Bugg after Frost sprints through the middle and we have loose men in the forward line; this means our two-way running from defense to offense was superior to Adelaide's defensive running Adelaide’s structure 1 kick their offensive side of the play fell apart in the 2nd half; they were obviously shitscared of our offensive tackling pressure and wanted to neutralise contests in our forward-50, but the ball just kept coming back in because they didn’t have any marking targets outside our f50 OLIVER!!! Tom McDonald’s ability to make a contest as a forward and then gather the ball at ground level and hit up Pedersen with a 15.1m kick (who goaled) was fantastic; short marks inside 50 have been something we can never seem to get but TMac figured it out One of Bernie’s greatest strengths as a tagger is that opponents know he’s dangerous if he gets the ball; Sloane was obvously scared of that so he couldn’t be totally offensive all night Hannan did enough to earn his spot Watts needs to learn how to extend his arms and take a mark in his hands That Frost/Jetta/Salem tag-team goal saving defensive job with 4:30 to go in the 3rd quarter was something special Soft free to Garlett running back, but again our offensive running is superior to Adelaide's Watts was spare man in defense when Jenkins took a sliding mark and goal; OMac was his direct opponent but Watts didn’t position himself correctly to influence that contest A great contested mark from Tyson (sticking the boot out if you don’t mind) leads to a Petracca-to-Viney goal; I loved Tyson’s increased physicality in the 2nd half Jayden Hunt be like: “Ooh! FOOD!!!" Vince is like: “Slow it down Jonesy! There’s a minute to go!”, and Jones is like: “Yeah, I know mate. I’m the captain for a reason." TMac’s tapdown to Kent was superb; Kent bangs it in and Garlett takes an all-too-easy mark in a 1-vs-2 situation; love those last minute goals (when they go our way of course) 4th Quarter: Salem’s tackling pressure and silky disposal is a wonderful combination Kent is just barely best-22; he needs to kick on soon or he’ll be trade-bait That deliberate rushed rule is a joke Does Kent run hard all night or is he a junk-time specialist? Either way I like players who kick goals Wagner’s disposal reeks of “OH CRAP I’M PLAYING AFL FOOTY” but his tackling is top-notch. Oliver’s tackling pressure is beautiful; he’s basically the perfect inside footy player Again Adelaide’s two-way running is found wanting when compared to ours; they have absolutely no-one forward while we have a few back, and a good chase from Hannan stops their flow forward Watts is turning into quite a capable negating backup-ruckman, and his ground-level ability is far superior to full-time rucks like Jacobs and Co. Oliver, Kent and Hannan combine for a junk-time goal; make of it what you will Petracca is a bleedin’ bull! Yep. He’s a bull. Weiderman goes ok; he’s still very raw and shouldn’t be in the team ahead of Pedersen (if Gawn is fit), but he’ll be something one day I think I’d pay a lot of money for Clayton Oliver to teach me how to handpass a football like he can
