According to Demonland statistics at the time of writing this post there are 1,110,105 posts on the Melbourne Demons forum. That means 33,303 are not guesses. I find that number hard to believe.8 points

I think Viney and Oliver would sit comfortably above Kent/Dunn on the list of signing priorities. And Hogan is ALREADY signed for next year. Smile a little.6 points

I think our efforts at marketing this sort of thing have been just below awful. Bring him back when the time is correct not for a marketing reason.6 points

It's because we are in a great position to front load contracts. We advertise they it's a contract extension. But that's not really accurate. It's more likely that we have renegotiated his original contract from 2 years to 4. Instead of paying him the standard new player salary for 2 years, we can pay him a heap more now and next year and then greatly lower the amount in the final year/s of the contract. Oliver wins because we give him a massive pay rise right now based on potential, and ends up getting paid slightly more than he would have by waiting. And we end up winning because we have front loaded the hell out of the contract a d have more to splash around later on. The big risk for the club is if Oliver doesn't kick on like expected, or if he gets a serious injury. There is a reason why his manager has recommended he takes it. It's a great deal for his client. The only reason why we can do this is because we have been rubbish for a decade and struggled to meet minimum salary cap spending. We have been employing this tactic for a long time now and won't be able to do it if all the young players on our list kick on like expected over the next few years. A good problem to have.6 points

"Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people." Eleanor Roosevelt Yes, we (me) all fall into that trap, Stu. But it's a quote worth remembering.6 points

FFS Stuie, you can't just say "My view differs to yours, i accept that you do not see things my way" can you? Why do you always belittle people if they do not see things through your eyes? Cam is a handy player, he is no ruck man and is an ok back up.5 points

and to Pedo's credit he gets down back and helps out and he tends to impact the score board as well, imo he's a handy role player.5 points

I am thinking Viv was given specific instructions and he carried them out against the Dogs. He went from being named on the extended bench against the Suns to being named in the starting 18 (does not mean he will start) and ahead of the more fancied (on Demonland) Salem in a team coming off a loss. Obviously the coaches felt he did well. He provides (in basketball terms) the outlet. Yes he did not get many contested possessions but in my humble opinion one of our faults is that we have too many players at the contest and not enough options for outlets if we win possession. This leads to turnovers. If you watch the Dogs they had one hard at it player in the contests and 2 or 3 on the outside waiting for the throw. Viv's delivery by foot and hand is excellent and he has been applauded by Plapp in public for his link up work between the back and forwards. Maybe we experts on Demonland not being fully aware of what players are asked to do and can only judge them solely on personal expectations. Viv does not kick goals but many of his possessions result in scoring opportunities. I would love to see a player evaluation of the 1sts the same way Casey players are assessed.5 points

Oliver: "It was a very easy decision ... I thought I'd get it out of the way and get it done with because I was going to sign eventually." I wish some of our other players took this approach.5 points

Dont believe these words actually came from the mouth of a player manager, without first fielding offers from other clubs. “It was a very easy decision. My manager said ‘just go with it’ and I did. Whoever the manager is, i wish he looked after all our guys.5 points

Nice of Jordie to put it to the top of the goal square with a rain-maker from 35 metres out.5 points

Barrett again questions the swap of Tyson and GWS pick 12 for MFC pick 2. Tyson had a great game against the Dogs (after a very good start to 2016). He was runner up in Demons B&F in 2014. Salem is still developing and must stand up in 2016 if the Dees are to improve. Josh Kelly is a star and all class but its 2 for 1 so its probably still a win-win trade.4 points

http://www.melbournefc.com.au/news/2016-05-20/harmes-the-latest-to-sign-on JAMES Harmes has become the latest Melbourne player to commit to the club, signing on until at least the end of 2018. ...4 points

Im impressed that at 194cm he doesnt get smashed in ruck contests - but he doesn't - now he doesn't win too many and his taps to advantage are negligable but his job is to give Gawn a rest and not have us pulverised in the ruck when Gawn isn't rucking - he plays that role well. What he needs to do is more when he is not rucking - he has games when he does and...... he has games when he doesn't4 points

Pfft.. Pederson is 193cm and spud Vickery is 200cm tall. Of course Vickery should have the advantage but we are not asking him to have hit outs, we want him just give a good contest and give Gawn a chop out. And thats what he does perfectly.4 points

38,666 Wow, I wasn't expecting that. Club must be working the phones. That's an increase of 564 in the past week. The previous week's increase was only 336. We will definitely crack 39,000 now. The question is how close to 40,000 we are going to get. Go Dees.4 points

I presume that your question is rhetorical. Clearly Gil's primary agenda is to ensure the survival and success of his marquee clubs and the rest can just take it or leave it. There can be no possible excuse for not scheduling a bye for both competing teams following a game in Darwin.....no excuse whatsoever. If I were to meet Peter Jackson I would ask him straight out - "Peter, why have you not demanded a bye (for both clubs) following the Darwin game. If not, why not. If so, what is Gil's response?" As far as Alice is concerned, this should be no greater problem for either club than any other interstate travel.4 points

It might make more sense if OMac comes in and Garland plays a different role with Jetta out. That's what I expect.4 points

Good to see VDB back at Casey. Hopefully he runs himself into good form soon.4 points

Well the way I see it is as follows, Dunn is a better kick, longer and more accurate, he is a better mark, is physically stronger, is less intimidated by opponents, is more effective up forward, is prepared to run and take the play on, is quicker and is better on the big guys. Think that is a good start. He was our regular full back and was pretty good over the last few years. To me Garland is a timid flanker being asked to play key position and it is not working.4 points

You can go off stats or you can go by what his perceived role is. Watching the game it was obvious that Hunt and Wagner were running forward offensively at stoppages and Michie was filling a hole in general play. He wasn't playing as an inside midfielder who will rack up high tackle counts. He got a game this week which says to me that he did what he was asked to by the coaches3 points

While i agree Garland was poor and Dunn was good at Casey, i think the coaching staff might be trying to make a statement with Dunny, clearly he's doing or done something they don't like. Personally i'd much rather see O'mac in the side getting experience, can cop mistakes from a young player but when a senior player makes basic skill errors under no pressure you can't excuse it.3 points

R5: Lynden Dunn: Dunny was fantastic on the weekend. He played a defensive role for us after being dropped from the senior team. Dunny came back and worked on a few areas of his game, which he was able to do. He had 26 possessions, five marks and five inside 50s, which was a pretty solid performance. Dunny showed great leadership and great organisation with our back six. R6: Lynden Dunn: Dunny had 28 possessions and made several effective tackles. He was really solid for us in defence and was really strong in a lot of one-on-one contests. He came forward in a lot of contests, which we encouraged him to do. He set up a lot of our offensive play, because he kicks the ball well and can get some distance. Dunny put the ball inside 50 five times during the game, which was a really good effort. He competed really well and it was a really solid game for him.3 points

You're honestly not sure why we've moved to re-contract Oliver this early? I think the evidence is relatively clear.3 points

'rp', I can see the potential in Kent but I believe he has a long way to go to realise it. Yes, the small forward role can be difficult and at times it's still like the old days of starvation corner as the HFF used to be called. ...but he can be a very lazy footballer & in our loses he has been poor. He's almost like our barometer, in the St Kilda game I was worried when in the first Q Kent was not chasing and didn't look switched on. Turned out I had good reason to worry. Kent needs to really watch someone like "Poppy" at the Hawks and model himself on that kind of work rate then he will get somewhere, at the moment I think he is coasting.3 points

I find what Oliver is doing more extraordinary. Weitering is a ready-made gun. His intercept marking, reading of the play, maturity and calmness is almost unprecedented for a young tall, but Oliver's story is just as compelling, if not more so. Oliver's poise, vision, clean hands, ability to execute under pressure and phenomenal decision making under immense heat is incredible for an 18 year old in his first year. He doesn't fumble and rarely makes a mistake. This time last year he wasn't going to be drafted. Oliver plays in the most physically demanding area on the ground. There's rarely a respite from bruising contested ball. Over 50% of his possessions are contested. Weitering plays behind the ball, which is far easier. Btw, I'm not knocking the ex-Demon supporting kid Weitering, who looks like a future hall of famer, but I reckon Oliver's exploits are even more extraordinary given the circumstances and position he plays. If anything, Clarrie deserves more plaudits than he's getting.3 points

You don't think he will be around the 22 in 2019? AFL asks clubs to invest in players, teenagers, with a maximum 2 year deal. We have essentially turned Oliver's into a 4 year deal. It is so smart. Why bother waiting and pay more in a year's time?3 points

A loss would be disastrous. For it to happen again after Essendon would look pretty bad. It'll go one of a few ways: 1. We will smash them from the first bounce until the final siren. 2. We will smash them out of the gates and then play putrid for 3 quarters. 3. We'll play average for a half then smash them. 4. We lose and Demonland servers crash.3 points

I don't have the energy to argue the point on Garlo, Stu. I really don't. I don't see him as bad as others do, and I don't see that he's been awful the last few games either that warrants him being dropped. I see a few jumping on the bandwagon and calling for his head. There have been others that are under performing that should go before him - Salem being one and it sets that example. If others want him dropped, then that's fine. I don't totally see it that way but I'm not going to fill up this thread arguing the point as it will get me nowhere.3 points
