  1. From Roger Mellie's training thread last Friday: ".....Just a bit of shooting out handballs under pressure. He may or may not have been kicking shortly afterwards but I couldn't be 100% sure (lost in a sea of blue). All I can say is he moved well."

  2. I have been reading Demonland posts for the past couple of years and really enjoy the way that all contributors "go at it". Being a die hard Dee supporter (18 year member) I cant get enough info on what I think is happening and what is really happening inside the MFC Zone. I am now a fully paid up member and now look forward to a reading all and sundry posts without those pangs of guilt at not being a paid up member.

  4. Why do you always make this issue about politics? If you are trying to argue this issue scientifically, then political ideologies should not matter. Is it because this is the basis for your own belief that climate change is a hoax is simply an extension of your political allegiance? Or did you settle on the science first, and then just find it was a happy coincidence that it aligned perfectly with your political ideology?

  5. A small morsel ... It's second hand from my brother, who was also at training (doesn't post here although he's been reading for nearly a decade). He said that in one section of the ground for those not joining in "full training", such as newbies and others on a modified program, a coach would throw the ball in the air, or on the ground and two players competed in a 1 v 1 contest to win the ball. For example, Oliver was pitted against ANB, and Jones and Petracca went head to head. Petracca and Jones pretty much squared the ledger. Oliver beat ANB at least 9 times out of 10. He was adamant it was that lopsided, such was Oliver's effectiveness.

  8. They may be morally bankrupt but Gill and his henchmen are laughing all the way to the bank. His salary is prodigious. Unfortunately in this capitalist dog eat dog world capacity to earn has nothing to do with worth. I much prefer those simple souls who earn a lot less but are actually helping others. I do not include writers who are self absorbed and neurotic with a tendency toward addiction.

  12. Steady on. We were 18th in the midfield this year. That would be a leap of ridiculous proportions.

  14. Champion Data rate each list purely according to CD ranking points (aka SuperCoach scores). Elite is the top 10% in each category. Above average is the next 20%, average the middle 40%. Context is everything when using this data. A side that isn't very good, or at least has a number of poor games, is going to end up with lower overall CD ranking points than one that is consistently winning. Naturally, player who play in better teams are going to end up with a higher ranking, even though they may not actually be better players. Another issue is that it backward looking, and in no way a prediction of future performance; so it is a poor basis for making an assessment of the future prospects of a team. To use the dogs as an example: most had them bottom 4 before the start of the season. Guys like Murphy, M Boyd, Bontempelli, Stringer and Wood were in the average category before the season. All had career best years - well into above average or elite - and drove them up the ladder. Stats would never have predicted that.

  16. Well, sort of ... I don't fancy the Pats, Detroit, Saints or the Colts and I do rate Pittsburgh & the Giants (at least for this week anyway) Whether that all converts to me picking up a precious point is another thing though

  19. When you say that available resources played a role in the selection of Dean Bailey you are wrong. Plain and simple. Fact not opinion. When you say you have "no conclusive proof" for your claim I put it to you that you have no proof whatsoever. Days of AFL funded overpaid $1.5 million coaches were years in the future. As is usual with these appointments discussions about salary were undertaken only after the preferred candidate was identified. The amount Dean could command as a rookie coach was modest by industry standards in 2007 and entirely affordable for MFC. After all, we had made a profit in each of the previous 3 years and were to make a profit in 2007, the year of Dean's appointment. There was no potential coach we did not approach because of considerations of affordability. There was no available coach who did not pursue an interest in the opportunity out of consideration of the available salary. As for not being a destination club, Hardwick clearly disagreed.

  20. Not even just a sense of where to run but to gut run and keep running until the 'play' is finished. Someone said that run was from wing, thought it started deeper in defence and he keep on pushing through each line as he saw space open up in front in him and he didn't leave it to 'someone else' to finish it off. Great to watch.

  21. I remember when I first saw Paul Poupolo and thinking he was a bit of a scrubber. While lacking the class of some of his teammates he's become a handy contributor, who has a knack of doing something important just when it was needed. While different sorts of players, I have the same feeling about Neal-Bullen. I reckon when the team needs it he'll kick that goal or lay that tackle. I think he'll will himself to be a regular part of the 22 and get the most out of his God given talents. Just a hunch.

  22. An AFL recruiter said that he thought ANB could be a real steal for us and that he thought he could be a top footballer. Only on what I have seen so far, I far prefer Stretch of the two and haven't yet seen what the recruiter saw in ANB. He is not big and not overly fast. However, he has time on his side to show us what he has got. I hope the recruiter was right. Oliver to me just seems a see it, get it footballer. As someone said, hopefully he becomes our Ollie.

  24. Wouldn't it be great, if our midfield improved to the extent, where we didn't care less about whether we get Prestia or not?
    2 points
  25. The club is all over Prestia and is quietly confident. The fact we traded out next seasons 1st round pick is of little consequence. We can trade 2017 first round for a start. If Prestia says he wants to be traded to Melbourne, he will be a Dee in 2017. Our performance this season is very important for Prestia and perhaps Hogan, but I also hear that contract negotiations for Hogan are going very well and he could be signed to a mega deal before round 1. Fingers crossed!!

  28. Well, it seems the science IS settled according to those who matter... I suppose that for you, the science would only be settled if the whole climate meeting in Paris had been abandoned. But of course, you obviously are far more educated and better read in matters of climate change than those who advise world leaders.

  29. The post in question was offensive and misquoted me in a number of ways but the vile part was to suggest I made up a conspiracy when he knew very well that I had confidentiality obligations yet he covered for you on the basis of confidentially. In my book, that's disingenuous and dishonest ... and vile. If you want to continue this discussion, you can continue by PM because the subject is now closed. I will be asking my two sources if they want to confirm what they told me three years ago. If they agree, I will post.

  32. I reckon that if Frost is good enough as a lockdown defender we should throw him to FB and Dunn to CHF/FF. We would then look something like this: Jetta-Frost-Garland Salem-Tmac-Melksham Vince-Viney-Stretch Kent-Hogan-Petracca Garlett-Dunn-Kennedy Gawn-Tyson-N.Jones Int: Brayshaw, Watts, vandenBerg, Neal-Bullen

  33. another uninformed muppet taking a shot.. no mention of jetta, dunn, salem, vandenberg, garlett, tyson, garland or frost... and apparently he's got no time for Kent or Watts. Fairly handy group of players to add to the 9 that are mentioned I would have thought. Then there's the 3 recruits and the other youngsters in Harmes, ANB and Stretch, our cattle is OK thanks very much data man. PS I'd like to add that this group was good enough to finish ahead of 5 sides, and beat 5 others on the day - two of whom finished in the 8... and is fairly self-evident that a team you have acknowledged to be very young is likely to improve over the next few years. Maybe the writer hasn't glanced at the ladder since '13. Grr.

  34. True ... but I think that's only natural given that we rigorously put every player under the microscope from the moment they're recruited (and often well before). I was looking back into our archives on Demonland and found our team lists from 2011-2012. Irrespective of whether or not we're still as young a side as we were back then, I'm confident that we're in front on quality and depth but more importantly, well ahead in terms of fitness and commitment to the club than where we were at three or four years ago. We need to be more consistent from week to week but inconsistency is what you get with youth. That's why we've invested heavily in our development team. With that and the combination of Roos and Goodwin set to take a better list into 2016, I'm looking forward to being better equipped to produce a more attacking style of game that will have us competing with the AFL's big boys in the not too distant future.

  35. What I like is that we're putting together a really balanced multifaceted midfield. They're not all extractors, or receivers, or bulls, or gut-runners. It's the midfield as a unit, not any single midfielder that's the key. Having said that, the one thing it probably does lack is speed, but it's possible to make up for that with quick ball movement. Which would also be a welcome change.

  36. With ANB it's not what he has in terms of stand out traits but that he shouldn't have too many weaknesses and will be a really nice bottom 6 player. He's fit, finds the footy, uses it pretty well and whilst not big or fast he's not small or slow either. He'll also be a good culture guy. Stretch has a bit more x factor being a really good natural outside running type.

  38. I get the bit where the Vikes want to get closer for the field goal ... they can't throw it in the field of play (with 13 seconds remaining) but a "sack" isn't counted on - that's worst case scenario. Everything is just about a risk in this sport and I suppose without risk there's no reward. You're not out of it cbh and that's a decent effort by your blokes in Arizona.

  39. Thirty years ago in my late teens, early twenties I used to frequent the Top Bar located in the heavens of the members. Aside from having the planets most durry/beer/bourbon proof carpet I remember it for being 90% Melbourne supporters. Your friends supporting other teams were very much in the minority. The Long room and Dining room were possibly even more Demon. Now if I'm ensconced in the Bull Ring and there is a big roar during a game I'm still surprised to see that it was an opposition goal. Perhaps a sustained period of success with this team will tip the balance back to where it belongs

  42. I might be a one-eyed Dees supporter, but I think we have the best 'young' list in the competition. Hogan would be silly to leave IMO. If you look at Freo's list, its going to at the very least stagnate over the next 5 years. Even with Hogan, they'd still have to replace Pavlich, Mundy, Sandilands, McPharlin, Johnson, Crowley, Barlow and Pearce. Even with those players I don't think Freo are in the window anymore.

  47. Calculated risk, Richmond wouldn't have requested the test, nor MFC allowed it had either side thought it'd re-injure his Navicular, or it'd already gone again. imo we simply wanted Jake Lever, Richmond expressed an interest in Trengove, we knew there was a chance he may not make it back even being generous and saying trenners was 30-70 to make it back, that'd become the tigers problem and we'd get a high quality player in with no injury history, it was a deal to good to be true. I reckon it's as simple as, RIchmond made a great offer, we ran it by Trenners and he was happy to stay or go, he didn't pass the medical and we move on, clearly there is no bad blood, i'd argue Trenners is as invested in the MFC as anyone, the way he's handled himself this year, and helped Petracca along is a credit to himself and imo inspirational.
