  1. Pedersen signs on for 2016 Just a one year contract but am absolutely delighted to see Cam available to help Jesse for one more year! Go Dees!

  2. I was very worried about this - the first test of the Restricted aspect of the Free Agency package brought in three years ago. Eventually, a team would have a player that wishes to leave for a contract that they would be happy to meet: Patrick Dangerfield $4.8m over 6 years. If this were the NBA, the Crows would have 'met' those terms and Danger Mouse would still be a Crow for another 6 years. That is how their RFA works. The AFL's version has meant that the club has to trade that player or risk losing him for nothing in the draft - essentially the same as an OOC player like Howe will face if he is adamant to leave the Dees. So RFA in the AFL is meaningless. An avenue for a club to keep a star player on the players terms - the reason why the NBA has it - is mitigated. The players have to forfeit some power in the new landscape or we will continue to have a lopsided competition. They don't even have to forfeit this - I would fight to take away their Trade Veto - that would make the game a great deal fairer. But the players should be careful no to ruin the game they profit from...

  3. Just been to the VWFL awards night (Brownlow) and Daisy just capped off an amazing season taking home the medal. Not a bad year, winning the Dees Vs Dogs games, winning the MFC B&F, a premiership and now the league B&F. She just passed Debbie Lee as the most awarded player in the VWFL after winning a record breaking 6th league medal (in the past 7 years!) Absolute legend, fantastic role model and great asset to the MFC. Well done Daisy

  8. I know I'm well and truly in the minority here but if we've been patient with Watts I think we should give Toumpas at least another year. Still think he will end up being a solid player.

  9. Women breaking into the previously barred areas of AFL participation will have a significant and overdue effect on the game. At the simplest level, the talent pool for coaches, support staff and ultimately yes, players, will be boosted. For Melbourne to be in a deserved position to ride at the crest of this wave will be a short term bonus and a long term bonanza, provided we keep up our commitment. The other aspect is that being the club that chose to get involved, chose to be a leader, will be an aspect of our history that will continue to bring us respect, support, and even quite material gains in sponsorship and membership for many years and decades to come. The current generation of new parents in Australia grew up in the 90s. They might have been able to just roll their eyes and focus on the game when the likes of Sam Newman or Picket Fence are around, but why would they go to the trouble of introducing their kids to something that even now feels to them like a cultural anachronism? So yes, Daisy Pearce being an eloquent and charismatic speaker is a terrific benefit to the club as well as to the progress of women in football.

  11. You've made my day Bub. Heard from the axiomatic 'reliable source' that Roosy is currently walking around with a smile he just can't wipe of his face. Apparently he is pretty chuffed at landing another 'big fish', which will be announced when the time is right. I just hope my 'reliable source' is correct.

  13. Less than one in one thousand boys born in Australia each year will ever play a single game of AFL football. Jordie is one. Of those who ever play a game, 80% will have shorter careers than Jordie. Better career stats than Crowley. Jordie (pick 1 2009 rookie draft) 79 MFC games v Scully (pick 1 2009 national draft) MFC 31 games. Massive respect. The generosity of spirit shown by the contributors to this thread stands in stark contrast to the meanspiritness of the knockers and the naysayers who have ridden on this honest kid's back over the last 7 seasons.

  14. What if we accept that he ain't comin to us no matter what the offer!
    4 points
  15. Absolutely. Giving him away for chump change now would be essentially giving up on him, which would run contrary to everything Roos was saying prior to this season. Toump can still become a decent player. We've seen the talent he has in glimpses. It's just going to take patience. I'll be disappointed if we basically chuck in the towel and give him away for nothing.

  16. I hope Hogan is just guessing about where Frost will be playing in 2016. He's far more suited to the back-line.
    4 points
  17. Definitely - they'd found some rhythm up front before Peds got injured.

  21. Might be the same source Gia used when he said Melbourne were giving Danger 1.5 million reasons to think twice about where he was headed. Damn him for not taking the money and choosing to go home and play for the club he likely grew up supporting. Bastard.

  22. This will be interesting. Dangerfield ending up in the draft is a worst case scenario for all parties involved. It would mean that Adelaide will not be compensated, Geelong will likely miss out on him, and Dangerfield himself runs the risk of ending up in Queensland, Sydney, or at another Victorian club. Adelaide will obviously be keen to maximize their return from Geelong, however they won't want to lose him for nothing by letting him slip through to the draft. If Geelong are unable to satisfy Adelaide's demands will he become open to moving to other Victorian clubs for fear of heading north? Will Geelong accept Adelaide's demands? Or will Adelaide give in and accept Geelong's best offer? It's a high-stakes game that these three parties are playing, and it's going to be very interesting to see who folds first.

  24. I could understand why, but again, accepting $700k less, to avoid traffic? You see where im coming from right? Something doesn't sit right here. I cant see how a 3rd party deal is not involved.

  25. We don't need a $1.5mil a year player. I'd rather save the money for Hoges, Brayshaw, Viney, Petrac etc. He obviously wants to play for and live in Geelong. Let it go.

  27. It says free agency will remain until the end of 2016, then what? A review? Compensation is based on a formula determined by the AFL. The Hawks were rightly shafted when Buddy left, regardless if their compensation pick came directly after their 1st pick. I'm a fan of the first 18 picks bring untainted. No more priority picks and 1st round compensation. So if Danger goes to Geelong, Crows get an extra first rounder and Geelong keep theirs. Yet Collingwood get Treloar and loose their first round pick and possibly a first or second round pick from next year. I do like the trading of future picks, there's a sense of unknown there and it can be a risk. Scrap RFA and make clubs trade current picks, because in reality the Crows should get Geelongs first pick this year and next. That would be fair. I don't mind the URA. I'm sick of the Freeman/Boyd/McCarthy situation, with the incoming pay rise should be the player movement without consent. Sick of people citing family reasons, they can move back after their career is over.

  28. We've been patient with Watts...and hes still not there. We're so enamoured we've shopped him and no takers. This is the reason we should persist also with Toumpas ? Haven't sold me !!

  31. I can see a problem with accusing a number of people with the same view point of groupthink... Frankly, it's an easy out for an individual who shares a view with a minority of people to simply dismiss the majority of having 'goupthink.' State a case, defend it, let people decide, change your mind if the facts demand it, or stick to what you think. Rinse and repeat.

  32. Not embarrassing. Shows that money is an important component but not the only one. Danger was probably ever only going to Geelong or remain at Crowland. He seems like a principled and honest person and had been in discussion with the Cats for some time. It is clear that he wants to return home making the Cats the logical choice. In a car congested city like Melbourne (quickly becoming the most unliveable city) why would you want to commute from the Bellarine Peninsula to AAMI park. Unless you were going to throw in a helicopter.

  33. In that case their should be investigations into under the table payments by Geelong to Dangerfield or his family/missus There is no logical reason why hed knocks back that sort of money

  36. Apologies if this has already be done to death. But I thought I'd set out the team we currently have for next year now that players have been delisted. I guess for most of you this will be a bit obvious but doing this for my own benefit to wrap my head around the players we have and where we need more depth/talent to continue to improve. I understand more players will go and be traded etc. But this is IMO our most competitive side of current players. I would like players like Garland, Lumbumba, Pederson to be pushed out by younger guys throughout the season. Let me know who I have left out B Frost Dunn (V) Garland (22) (28) (27) HB Salem T. McDonald Jetta (20) (23) (25) C Tyson Viney Brayshaw (22) (22) (19) HF Pettracca Pederson AVB ® (19) (28) (23) F Kent Hogan Garlett (21) (20) (26) Fol Gawn Vince N. Jones: (23) (29) (27) Int Watts Harmes ® Howe Stretch (24) (19) (25) (19) Depth: Backline: Lumumba (28) Grimes (25) Terlich (25) O. Mcdonald (19) White (19) ® Midfield/wing: Michie (23) M. Jones (27) Trengove (24) ANB (19) Forward: Dawes (27) JKH (20) Newton (23) Hunt (20) Ruck: Spencer (25) King (20) ® ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- So its clear that the team needs some depth at each position - Regardless of whether Howe and Garland are leaving we do need another backman. Need another steady player to go alongside Frost, White and O'mac while they develop. - Obviously we need another ball winning midfielder to add to our depth. I think with the boost of Petracca and development of Brayshaw, ANB and AVB the midfield will be better but we need some more steady players to back them up. Would be good to have another younger player pushing the midfield. I would like to see Jones and Vince take on different roles next year where they carry less burden and are able to move away from their tags. Another player to keep knocking on the door with Michie would be terrific. - As stated by others a marking forward who could go into the Ruck in a pinch. I think Pederson could fill this void until we find someone. But a younger tall would be great. Now who could fill these gaps?

  37. For those who believe that Dangerfield is going anywhere else but Geelong it's worth pondering over the pain the Cats have gone with regard to letting some of their all time greats leave the club. Stevie Johnson would IMO have been kept on if they weren't absolutely sure that Danger was coming to them and it will happen - it's just a matter of how he gets across.

  38. 1977 and norff are being beaten badly. Half time. Barassi: "Right you blokes, haven't you listened to anything we've been talking about this year. You're absolutely hopeless. It's time to get back to basics." Holding up a football in front of the players, Ron says "this is a football". Crackers Keenan in the back of the room: "hold on coach, you're going to fast". QD.

  46. My honest opinion is i would put him in the same boat as Malceski, Lumumba, Byrnes boat. These players are made to look good with a strong team around them but struggle big time when reality kicks in and they are in a bottom 8 team because their teammates around them aren't as good. So in other words... NO
