Caps off a fantastic year. Considering the team won a total of 4 games I thought this was an incredible effort. It was obvious he would top the polling for us, but 14 was more votes than I thought. Well done Jonesy.12 points

Nathan Jones Brownlow vote: 14. Total Melbourne votes: 27. Jones is 52% of our whole team - yeah that sounds about right.8 points

Grossly mismanaged by Port Adelaide, get him back down to his proper playing weight and he can make it, he'd also come very cheaply. Worth a punt imho4 points

i wouldnt mind putting him on the permission to train list. see how badly he wants it.4 points

Presumably, Deep Throat is the foremost authority in the world about player movements. I'd almost completely forgotten about him (or her ) but I suppose it was only a matter of time before he/she reared his/her ugly head. What we really need is a special thread for unconfirmed trade/FA/draft rumours so we can check in December how many of them actually worked out as rumoured.3 points

Having seen all but a few interstate games this year I can honestly say that I have never seen a single player carry the load like NJhas had to this year. The gap between him and the rest of our side in Browlow voting is a more accurate reflection of what I saw on field than we got at the Bluey. Granted, a different voting system but he has been head & shoulders above the rest.3 points

Screwing Junior over for the sake of a year was a monumental [censored] up. He had valuable leadership attributes that we desperately needed and wanted, and was an examplery player for us. Sometimes I shake my head at some of the stupidly idiotic decisions we have made with our list. Newton got an extra year but Junior didn't. I mean FFS! It was an epic fail.3 points

Opened up the thread thinking it was about Jack Watts, he did poll 3 against the Bombers3 points

To all those that want rid of Stef. He's a 198cm fast, agile player. Has some deficiencies for sure but is a 1000 times better than Spencer and possibly Gawn. Was outstanding in the ruck last year. The way Jamar has played since winning AA is worrying. Maybe has the beemer disease. Who rucks when Jamar goes down?? Please don't tell me Spencer. We have spent time developing Stef who was a late starter to AFL. It defies belief that some of you ppl want to get rid of him.3 points
-
With so many potential players leaving I dont see any real value in getting rid of Stef? He is agile, can mark, can kick goals, can run. Another good pre-season and try to bulk him up and he could play potentially forward in the pocket which would soak up another tall backman taking some of the load off the other forwards. He can also play ruck and back in a pinch, a bit of coaching to help improve his shepherding and tackling would certainly not go astray. He may occassionally run into some wrong spots but when you have a side that goes backward as often as we do what where is the RIGHT spot. Stef would do very well at another club, because that club is likely to provide far better support for him than melbourne players do for each other which will allow him to mature and play better. We have some decent draft picks, and the potential to pick up some reasonable FA's that will add to the quality of the team.Yes I believe we have some quality players, but we also have some lazy players who turn the ball over far to easily which kills us. If we now just kill of the 'zone' or lazy mans defense and spare man in defence and maybe we would be more competitive. I would keep Stef and play him forward and concentrate on getting some more depth in the midfield and defence with our picks and FA signings.2 points

That's interesting. They must think Fletcher only has 3-4 years left. I thought they wanted mids, like us.2 points

We did get it wrong. It may not look like it from a glance over our playing list, but 2011 & 2012 showed what a footy side looks like without any real leaders. Even if Junior had been injured for some or most of 2011, Green as a stand in captain with his mate Bruce playing along side him may have given our list some decent leadership in tough times.2 points

That'd be the only place. Got narky in the Brownlow interview with Lingy when they suggested he was running in the GF sprint off 40m - everyone else had the [censored] taken in good spirit (see lie-detector) but he couldn't handle it. Total (short) [censored].2 points

Spending all of my time at Essendon, I thought it was standard practice that every player was monitored throughout every session with GPS data to get 100 per cent accuracy on workload and fatigue. This, obviously, costs money but I was shocked to hear that in 2012 only some players at the Dogs and Demons can be monitored each session as they don't have the funds to monitor all players. Maybe just me but I read that as rather unambigious. He says we dont have the money for enough GPS's and as such cant monitor all players.. Its exactly what he says !!2 points
-
There is a future for you as a spin doctor. So the interpretation now is that we have enough GPS units but are not using them.. Odd thing for Llyod to mean in an article which talks about clubs being under resourced. So for your interpretation to hold water, he must have meant lack of money to employ people to analyse the data. But It is hard to believe the club would not collect every bit of data it could even if it did not have the resources to analyse it week by week. Disk space is cheap, and one can always do a bit more analysis when time permits. So your defence of Llyod is extremely weak. BTW I don't think he is kicking us while we are down. I think he is a poor journo just looking to jump on the 'resource divide' bandwagon to fill up his copy. I don't deny the divide is reall -quite the contrary.2 points

Give him some credit.... He did come up with the light in the handbag idea. And he's quick to realise if you crunch your packet of chips before opening, you get more chips that way.2 points
-
Mate your kidding yourself, he's not a fringe player at all. When he hasn't had injury concerns over the past two years he's easily been in our best 22. And he has a lot of upside. Ever notice how the elite players like Scott Thompson, Dane Swan and Jobe Watson (just a few examples) are very intelligent? So is Stef, plus he is the most agile ruckman in the comp (excl. nik nat). Trading him will prove to be an error imo. With a clear run at it, he is ready to excel. Collingwood obviously knows this.2 points

and the club pays the Bills. As i said earlier Jnr's hammies were dodgy and if he had pinged them early in 2011 we would have been a man down. I very much doubt he would have played in 2012 unless he had had that "Gap" year. Jnr was not Kicked Out. A tough decision was made.2 points

Great effort Jonesy and there were many calling for him to be traded a couple of seasons ago, let that be a lesson to all on this forum who slag off our young players at every opportunity. Some very good kids on our list and some good honest footballers, once we sort out the mix we will get there. Again great effort Jonesy it's a tribute to your dedication and efforts2 points

FCS. The intimation from Lloyd was that we don't have enough units, as evidenced by Neil Craig also inferring the same: "we’re not sitting here as a club wishing for more in the area of GPS units." Lloyd wrote a bad article with ONE piece of circumstantial evidence open to subjective interpretation concerning our lack our resources and it was refuted by Craig. Craig then 'flipped the script' and changed the subject onto personnel being more important than facilities when facilities are homogenous across all clubs. At which point I nodded my head with Craig and shook my head at the idea that I gave a crap what Lloyd thought.2 points

On the verge of greatness ? You're funny. Martin is a very athletic gumby. He'd be really handy at Collingwood and I'll back the club to do a trade if they think they can improve our list. That's what it's all about. I agree that Collingwood's second pick isn't enough and I'd rather a player (no older than 25) that is going to immediately improve our side.2 points

Collingwood's second round pick will be in the 37-43 range. Computer says no.2 points

Stefan is too good ,quick ,mobile and skillfull to trade. He is on the verge of greatness. Trading him now will bite us on the arse .2 points

no we don't disagree. I just think the club was in a true Rock & a Hard Place with Junior. If he had pinged his hammy again early in 2011 all hell would have broken loose.2 points

We are not to be a charity club whom gives games purely for being a good servant...this attitude is the reason we are where we are.. Admittedly junior could have stayed at the club, however not as a player.2 points

Congratulations to Jonesy! 15th in the Brownlow with 14 votes in a team that won only 4 games. We have one real A grader who has done it through sheer hard work. Now a few others need to follow his lead. Go Dees!2 points

I'd want to be a whole lot more certain that Gawn and Fitzpatrick will make the grade and Jamar can prove me wrong and return to some decent form before we trade Martin. If it is in fact a done deal, then it better be a good one.2 points

Watching the Swans on Friday night I was awestruck by just how good this footy club is. They have hardness and determination in spades and an appetite for the contest that is utterly mental. They don't get ruffled by the mind games and they don't swallow the bait when teams try and goad their players. Except for Malceski maybe. I'd give my left nut for the MFC to have 1/10th of whatever it is they have But anyway on with the theory Being in an NRL city seems to have really rubbed off on them by certain stoppage tactics they employ. I noticed that in the packs one of their players would often hold the ball in close with one arm, duck their head and attempt to "tunnel" through opposition bodies. When they get through they stretch upwards and handball backwards over their heads or shoulders where time and time again, three Swans players would be waiting. One guy grabs the ball, the other two shephard which gives them that spli-second they need to clear it. They did this a lot against Collingwood and it was bloody effective. Other teams, notably ours, just try and knock it forwards or, (more often than not), panic, drop the ball, and just go to ground. We share facilities with the Storm, arguably one of the greatest NRL teams of the modern age, I'd be filthy if I found out the MFC was not trying to engage the Storm to learn these pack busting style techniques. Considering Neelds style of game we need to become like the Swans in this area.1 point

you wouldn't think he'd quit if he didn't have an offer elsewhere... either he was going to be delisted and went first, or he has at least one club that's interested.1 point

WJ, who cares when it isnt us. all those draft picks etc will be for naught because of scully. they wont win a flag soon. because of scully. its great1 point

Jones will win it one year - I have no doubt. Just need to win more games for the umps to take notice and vote accordingly. Hard to win it in a team beaten so regularly. Note. Toby Greene, GWS = 4 votes.1 point

No-one to take votes off him. Pitiful, but nothing we didn't know.1 point

Congratulations to the GWS. They have the highest paid player in the history of the game, who (earned) make that, was paid, $2million this year and didn't get a single vote in the Brownlow. Well done.1 point

We only ever gained the OPPORTUNITY to draft another young player, regardless of who it was, but some won't realise that and will focus on irrelevancies...1 point

I got Norms Smiths autograph in 1957 or 58! He really didn't want to sign,- "No you don't want mine, I'm not one of the players." I was an 8 year old footy mad Dees fan and said, "I know who you are and I'd like your autograph please!" He kinda looked around hoping no players were looking.1 point

I make a comment about an opinion on a player I'd rather have in our clubs stable, and you call me on ignorance of the free agency situation? I have opinions on players and I've given my thoughts on Byrnes. I rate Banfield higher because he is a specialist for that role and has more years ahead in the system - being a younger player - than Byrnes does. Which IMO suits our needs and enables longevity in the role. Regardless of it costing a 2nd/3rd r pick (example only). I understand a FA costs us nothing in terms for picks, but what is significant in list management and quality of players is - you pay for what you get most/some times.1 point

I was expecting to seen him in his battered trade-mark over-coat ah well, such is la vie1 point

Very impressed to see Geelong fielding basically a full contingent of listed AFL players in their VFL side yesterday. Just amazing how a successful club with a winning culture is keen to see their best young players taste premiership success and experience grand final intensity, even if it is at the lower level. Contrast that to the MFC, and the loser culture that it has perfected over the past 48 years. If this club can't see that a VFL finals campaign is not of greater benefit to players like Fitzpatrick & Spencer, then a few weeks of fitness training in November, then I can't see any prospect of us becoming a premiership contender in the next ten years.1 point

I don't think you could get two diametrically opposed opinions than these two. Who's right you ask? Neither. Arguments using extremes are rarely right.1 point

Surely Stefan Martin will be up for trading- Would any club take a look at him? I can't help but think Sellar is in front of him now in the ranks. Bate and Dunn would probably be less attractive but with Moloney we have a little worth . Anyway I think we should target Aaron Edwards- capable of kicking lots of goals, accurate set shot but has just fallen out of favour with the Roos. As well as Shannon Byrnes. Both are 28 i'm pretty sure but in my opinion there are a lot of gems who are outside of the best 22 at top 8 clubs that we should look at1 point
