I missed this one due to being overseas, but listened on afl radio with genuine interest and excitement. X is sounding like a winning pick at #9!

Well done to those who showed up, I'll be there for the next one.

In 2 weeks we have the Suns on a Saturday Arvo and no GP. Will we beat today's crowd?

I'm in two minds about this, Demon supporters are champions at making excuses for why we don't go to games. But we also have a smaller fan base playing out of the largest stadium in the country which can make it appear worse than it is. Whether we draw crowds or not shouldn't be on the supporters but unfortunately it is a reality of our sport that failure to draw crowds puts you in the spotlight, either about where games are scheduled (MCG v Docklands) or at the extreme whether you have the support to be viable in a national competition.

I am happy to get stuck into us when we don’t show up. 5k dees supporters rocked up when they normally don’t and instead of eating ourselves alive we should note the progress and move on.

I saw Caroline Wilson on Ch7 having a dig at the Dees crowd, she can be so annoying.

23K isn't too bad considering the F1 GP, playing GWS and the weather was truly horrid for March. I was intending to take my young son to this game and bailed a few hours before the start because the weather was too cold and wet for him. We watched on tv instead.

Interestingly, on this very same date last year I took my son to watch Dees v Doggies and it was a pleasant, sunny autumnal day and 44K turned up. I would guestimate 10K for the Bulldogs, a few thousand neutrals leaving around 30K Dees fans. Solidly good if you ask me.

People like winners ... and that's the World over

Besides which, what do say to a member who pays $350 for a membership and only goes to a few games?

It's estimated that on average, only about 25% of supporters use their membership in any given match

There's a truckload that consistently stay away

But the money is handy for the clubs

So membership in relationship to attending has a large disparity

And it's been that way for a number of years now

Many are happy to plough their money into the club but not attend

What research or otherwise are you basing your opinions on the make up of the crowd at AFL games???

Ir is it just your opinion or is it  a stab in the dark which very much seems the figures you are posting.

Regarding the average no’s of members per game attendance last Thursday on Fox during the Tigers vs Blues about midway through the 2nd quarter one of the commentators indicated there were 56,000 Tiger members in the crowd which was finalised at just about 89 over 80,000.

Thats 70% Wrong for your info.

Can you imagine is Sst night that of the 63,000 the Pies had  ONLY 16,000 MEMBERS?  Ie 25%???  No  Wrong sgain!!!

Finally Crows.  and Eagles had 42 and 46,000 on Sunday. If your guess is 25%!then only 10,600 and 11,500 members are attending.  REALLY ???

And even the Dees on Sunday 6,000 would have been the figure of approx. 24,000 as members ( AFL and any MCC double uppers)

Your figures are pure guesswork at worst and rubbery at best completely out of touch with the real world of AFL crowds.

FWIW I think the nearly 24,000

was OlK given the horrible pre match conditions the F1 and the minimal 500 GWS contingent. Would have been about low 30,000s if no rain or FI.

If we best Kangas  and score well 30,000 vs Gold Coadt is quite likely. If weather ok.!! .

I was there and felt it might have been closer to 28-30k.

Living in regional Victoria this year I’ve committed to 6 games, 3 of which will be the first 3 rounds. Loving the family friendly schedule this year, as I cannot attend night games easily.

How many members / supporters travelled to Sydney for our first game last year? Not too many I would think. My wife and I try to get to at least three games a year in Melbourne plus finals if we make them. For every game there’s airport parking, flights, sky bus to the city, motel room plus meals. It’s all relative.

Most people do what they can.

Stop your whinging.

Start of the season, first game after 6 months and the players run out to empty stands… we are a pathetic fan base.

We got over 23000 in the death time slot, in bad weather and against the Grand Prix.

I hardly saw a Giants fan there. They were all Dee’s fans, with most sitting undercover, which makes it look like less people.

If it was the Dogs or Roos against the Giants, it would have been lucky to get 10000.

Given better weather, I am sure we would have got over 30000.

PS: Title in fairness should be changed to “Some Demon supporters are pathetic”.

Nevermind the F1 was on and we were playing GWS

This post is more pathetic than the crowd size

I think Victoria is crying out for a smaller boutique stadium around 30k.

Princes Park was perfect. I loved going there.

Once the new Parkville Metro Station opens it would make it easier and quicker to get to via PT from many parts of Melbourne than is currently the case.

I used to live a mere 15 minute stroll from Princes Park which was very handy.

However, after a day on the cans the walk home took closer to an hour.  The difference was staggering.

I'm moving from Perth over to Melbourne in a few months, so along with my wife, there's an extra two to add to the mix. Hopefully that should shut Caro and the rest of the media up.

Sorry @Go Ds, all im hearing are excuses…………And pitiful ones at that.

The 20,000 of us that did bother to turn up sure did make some noise.

I bet it’s the type that don’t turn up to games that will complain the most if Trac leaves for a bigger club. We are not one, and going by todays paltry effort, never will be either.

Still………….id rather be in the company of the rusted ons than the bandwagoners who turn up when times are good.

You have just described the Hawthorn Football Club 🤣

It also doesn't help when TV/Highlights on social media make the G look empty.

Lots of fans sit MCC side which isnt picked up on the main camera, and the rain forced people undercover on Sunday. So it wasn't a good look.

Hoping we can shut the media up when we play the Suns, I'll try bring some mates with my additional GA tickets.

I watched the game on Fox Footy, they actually showed a lot of the MCC side during the broadcast. Not sure if it's the same feed for channel 7.

The 'Pathetic' word should be removed totally.  It's demeaning to the site

It's inappropriate and quite frankly, wrong

Why are we always singled and criticised for this? We just don’t have the same supporter base as other clubs.

We’re singled out because there a couple of other clubs (Blues, Bombers) who thought they were going to print money at the Darklands and when that didn’t happen think they deserve our MCG spot.. they can p*** right off..

I do not think pundits realise the impact of live TV has on attendances (particularly wet conditions).

While the crowd was slightly disappointing the reaction does not surprise me.

This thread is pathetic

Someone please end it

Nothing worse than Demon fans bagging the team, players or fellow supporters.

100% agree...we are a smaller club with a small hardcore fanbase, why is that so bad?

In the Redlegs we were making plenty of noise....

So sick of these so called "supporters" joining in with the media to stick the boots in, what good does it do anyone??

Went on Sunday and sat out in the open on level 1 of the Southern stand, got a little wet here and there, but thought it was a great atmosphere created by those that did come.  The collective clapping that the crowd with the Irish dancers doing the jig was awsome.  Actually liked being able to be close enough and quite enough to here the players and vice versa at boundary throw ins.

If we had have come away with the win, it would have been one of those days out at the footy to remember for mine.  It's one of those true joys being there as a die hard and savouring those moments and wins when all the band wagon jumpers and half hearted supporters have given up and don't bother to come and show their support.

Just wish the club would recognise those that do show up to the lesser games like GWS week in week out more when it comes to the big high crowd drawing games, when they want to cast us asides into the depths of the top level unless you are willing to pay top dollar for reserved seats.  Yes they want to profit off those big games, yet if we didn't show up to the GWS type ones, they'd be screwed.

  • WHAT’S NEXT? by The Oracle

What’s next for a beleagured Melbourne Football Club down in form and confidence, facing  intense criticism and disapproval over some underwhelming recent performances and in the midst of a four game losing streak? Why, it’s Adelaide which boasts the best percentage in the AFL and has won six of its last seven games. The Crows are hot and not only that, the game is at the Adelaide Oval; yet another away fixture and the third in a row at a venue outside of Victoria. One of the problems the Demons have these days is that they rarely have the luxury of true home ground advantage, something they have enjoyed just once since mid April.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

From the start, Melbourne’s performance against the Gold Coast Suns at Peoples First Stadium was nothing short of a massive botch up and it came down in the first instance to poor preparation. Rather than adequately preparing the team for battle against an opponent potentially on the skids after suffering three consecutive losses, the Demons looking anything but sharp and ready to play in the opening minutes of the game. By way of contrast, the Suns demonstrated a clear sense of purpose and will to win. From the very first bounce of the ball they were back to where they left off earlier in the season in Round Three when the teams met at the MCG. They ran rings around the Demons and finished the game off with a dominant six goal final term. This time, they produced another dominant quarter to start the game, restricting Melbourne to a solitary point to lead by six goals at the first break, by which time, the game was all but over.

  • CASEY: Gold Coast

Coming off four consecutive victories and with a team filled with 17 AFL listed players, the Casey Demons took to their early morning encounter with the lowly Gold Coast Suns at People First Stadium with the swagger of a team that thought a win was inevitable. They were smashing it for the first twenty minutes of the game after Tom Fullarton booted the first two goals but they then descended into an abyss of frustrating poor form and lackadaisical effort that saw the swagger and the early arrogance disappear by quarter time when their lead was overtaken by a more intense and committed opponent. The Suns continued to apply the pressure in the second quarter and got out to a three goal lead in mid term before the Demons fought back. A late goal to the home side before the half time bell saw them ten points up at the break and another surge in the third quarter saw them comfortably up with a 23 point lead at the final break.

  • POSTGAME: Rd 16 vs Gold Coast

The Demons did not come to play from the opening bounce and let the Gold Coast kick the first 5 goals of the match. They then outscored the Suns for the next 3 quarters but it was too little too late and their season is now effectively over.
