I hear what you are saying but in team sport everyone stands up for their team mates age is no barrier. There are only 2 players out there against 11 so when one is coping a verbal barrage he has to stand up and be counted.I do understand where you are  coming  from though

Expand

A verbal barrage???? Jasprit wasn’t talking to Uzzy, he was complaining to the umpire about Uzzy wasting time at the crease. I don’t think that warrants interception from a teammate.

And you mentioned “age is no barrier” which should also apply to having respect, not just for the opposition but for the sport of cricket in general.

Just out of curiosity, how many tests will Konstas need to play when he will be deemed appropriate to participate in on field gamesmanship.

That wasn’t gamesmanship IN MY HUMBLE OPINION. Merv Hughes-ing at fine leg on day one of his first Test speaks volumes, again IN MY HUMBLE OPINION. Shaking his hand-warmer in front of a bay of Indian fans while the “Kohli” chant rang out is ok for footy or even Big Bash, not so for Test Match cricket.

He came out and made a swashbuckling half century which was awesome but that shouldn’t give him licence to act like a superstar. Compare him to McSweeney, they’re complete opposites. And don’t say yeah but McSweeney bombed because that’s got nothing to do with it (Cam Green didn’t set the world on fire initially, either).

As for needing characters in the sport, someone like Marnus is perfect. He’s cheeky but doesn’t act like he’s the GOAT.

THIS IS ALL IN MY HUMBLE OPINION!

Jasprit addressed this concern with the umpire AND it was Uzzy at the crease, not Konstas. I can’t believe anyone would think Konstas telling Jasprit to get back to his mark is ok. It’s so not ok.

These guys aren’t playing parlour games like charades on Christmas night.

They’re playing cricket, a game with a hard ball, playing for their country. And we learnt on the last day of the Sydney test it is also a game of attrition. It’s a competitive sport and all the ancillary going ons,  which includes crowd involvement, are an important part of the game.

Bumrah was trying to unsettle Uzzy with gamesmanship, Konstas was his only teammate on the field and he had a team responsibility to get involved.  He flew the colours and earnt the respect of his team mates I would say.

Or perhaps you would have preferred Konstas wait until he has played enough test cricket to get to a level where it would be considered appropriate he be involved in the verbals that go on out on the ground and in this instance say sorry Mr Bumrah, Ill promise Ill bat at the pace you would like me to.

Bunny, think about it logically. Do you really believe that McDonald would instruct Konstas, in his first test, to do that? That would be like Goody telling Langford in his first game, to rough up Maynard. If it happened I’d be incredibly shocked.

Expand

I think it depends on how you phrase it.

Our top order had become quite stifled, and was scoring slowly. It was placing a lot of pressure on the top 5.

So the instruction could simply have been "Play your natural game, play your shots. Its ok to have an aggressive strategy because that's what we want you to bring - fast scoring. We know you have u orthodox shots, feel free to utilise them. We won't hold it against you if you go out being innovative and aggressive. Don't let the Indians intimidate you, so take the game to them."

As soon as a kid shows his personality we hammer it down through the media, the commentators, the ex players and the viewers. Then we complain that life’s become boring and predictable. I can’t stand conformity. Stick it to the man at every opportunity. Life’s way more interesting when feathers are being ruffled. The fact a 19 year old kid has the balls to do it shows he’s made of some good stuff.

Ironically its 100% absolutely IS CRICKET.

The only unusual thing about Konstans chirping to Bumrah in the 'get back to your mark' gate is that it was only his second test.

That sort of chirping has been occurring since WG Grace made the game a mental battle as much as technical battle.

Many people have a distorted view of what the game of cricket is like at the international level. The myth about 'the gentleman's game' and how it is played at its best between rival countries was put to rest shortly after it began in the second half of the 19th century! The list of on and off-field controversies, verbal and physical clashes, threats, outright cheating, and manipulation of the rules since then is as long as your arm (and leg!). Many of these incidents involved the most revered players from 'name your era'. Here's a few names from that list...

Douglas Jardine

Dennis Lillee

Javed Miandad

Greg Chappell

Hansie Cronje

Saleem Malik

Harbhajan Singh

Michael Holding

Colin Croft

Cameron Bancroft

The behaviour of Sam Konstas was insignificant in comparison. I suggest that everyone who has ever played the game in competition has at some stage baited an opposition player. Its just as much a part of the game as wearing protective gear when batting. You may not like the way Konstas looks, or enjoy his gamesmanship, but that is a matter of personal taste... its not a matter of bringing the game into disrepute!

Simply because his action was captured on-field for everyone to see. I'm not moralising about who on my list is more culpable than another, simply listing players who have been caught in controversy before Sam Konstas.

SCOOP JUNIOR'S PRESEASON TRAINING OBSERVATIONS I went down today in what were pretty ordinary conditions - hot and windy. When I got there, they were doing repeat simulations of a stoppage on the wing and then moving the ball inside 50. There seemed to be an emphasis on handballing out of the stoppage, usually there were 3 or 4 handballs to
