    Also true of Jackson. He was OK enough to be worthy of a game in his first season, but he's now into his 5th season and is still improving. Against that, 5 years in and he's not exactly taking the comp apart, and the difference between 2nd year and 5th year Jackson is not all that flagrant. 9th in Fremantle's Best and Fairest, still not the finished article.

    Not knocking him, would love to still have him, but I'm not sure even Jackson is a good counter-example for rucks take time.

    He's staying at GWS.

    They're pretty adamant after talks this weeks and a few proposals put forward to them that he's staying.

    Just remember GWS have a history of this with Cam McCarthy.

    Time will tell if their stance is the same at the end of the trade period. I find it hard to believe anything the clubs say during trade whether it’s positive or negative towards us.

    I do think this needs to be more of a talking point across the AFL.

    I follow professional sports in other countries. In the NBA, I don't think I've ever heard of a player asking for a trade due to family reasons or being homesick. Its all part of the job and being a professional player at the highest level. Its just a given that its a business and a job where sacrifices must be made.

    Perhaps the ANB situation is a bit different as he has been a servent of the club for 10 years. I wonder if he were only a second or third year player if such a request would have been accepted. Might be one of two times I've ever agree with Kane on this that if you put your name in a draft that you are accepting as a professional sportsman to be picked by any side, possibly interstate and that you need to make it work for the club that picked you.

    The only the only other argument Wade has is that he wants more of an opportunity to play AFL as he's been two or three behind the pecking order as a key forward/back. GWS/McCarthy is now saying that due to players leaving this off season that there is now less depth and more likelihood that he might play.

    I'd still be [censored] if I was Wade.

    This is the club we cleared their best tagger to for a steal as they widely admit.

    Think it will get done late in trade period.

    It's not our struggle? He wants to come to us but he's in contract with a club who is losing 4-5 put of contract,, who rate him and have a history of holding players to deals. Unless you want us to trade with exhorbitant overs to wrench him out unsure what more we do unless/until they change position.

    Also plenty of deals currently with preferred clubs poles apart at the minute. Typical trade period half way through.

    I think the unfortunate situation here for Dirk is the move to the Dees gives him more job security ie 3 year deal. Currently 12 months left at GWS and that could be him done at the end of 12 months if he doesn’t play any AFL next season, gets injured ect.
     

    Dees are keen now by who knows this time next year.

    He really needs to say to GWS  -  ok you are going to hold me to my contract but I am fighting for my career here. I need a few more years for security and to prove myself. Trade me to the Dees or offer me a contract extension. 
     

    This loss of security of remaining at GWS is the  unfortunate situation.

    I am not knocking us, but rather the situation we find ourselves in.

    Not sure how highly they really rate him. Do you think they rate him ahead of Hogan, Cadman, Taylor, Buckley, Himmelberg, Riccardi, Brown and or Gruzewski? Given they are all staying and he hasn't got a game ahead of them yet, unless a few go down with injury, he is probably still not getting a game ahead of them.

    It is pretty sad. Even after winning a premiership and clearly being a window of success, we weren't able to attract any star players. We've done some weak trades over the the past few years to ensure good will and being a good trading partner too. If we can't get a deal done for a mature age battler who hasn't played a game, then that good will built was for nothing.

    We did have Cerra but not the draft capital, and Houston before the shambles narrative took over.

    If he shows form in 2025 and plays some AFL games then he will be offered another contract potentially a better one than he would get if he negotiated it now 

    His challenge is to push into a GWS team that has more depth on the list for players like him

    If I was him I’d be still wanting to move next year either way as they haven’t exactly acted in good faith given the circumstances

      Round 11, the second week of The Sir Doug Nicholls Round, kicks off on Thursday night with the Cats hosting the Bulldogs at Kardinia Park. Geelong will be looking to to continue their decade long dominance over the Bulldogs, while the Dogs aim to take another big scalp as they surge up the ladder. On Friday night it's he Dreamtime at the 'G clash between Essendon and Richmond. The Bombers will want to avoid another embarrassing performance against a lowly side whilst the Tigers will be keen to avenge a disappointing loss to the Kangaroos. Saturday footy kicks off as the Blues face the Giants in a pivotal clash for both clubs. Carlton need to turn around their up and down season while GWS will be eager to bounce back and reassert themselves as a September threat. At twilight sees the Hawks taking on the Lions at the G. Hawthorn need to cement themselves in the Top 4 but they’ll need to be at their best to challenge a Brisbane side eager to respond after last week’s crushing loss to the Dees on their home turf. The first of the Saturday night double headers opens with North Melbourne up against the high-flying Magpies. The Roos will need a near-perfect performance to trouble a Collingwood side sitting atop the ladder.

Both experienced periods of success at various times last year. The Demons ran out of steam in midseason while the Swans went on to narrowly miss the ultimate prize in the sport. Now, they find themselves outside of finals contention as the season approaches the halfway mark. The winner this week will remain in contact with the leading pack, while the loser may well find itself on a precipice, staring into the abyss. The current season has presented numerous challenges for most clubs, particularly those positioned in the middle tier. The Essendon experience in suffering a significant 91-point loss to the Bulldogs, just one week after defeating the Swans, may not be typical, but it illustrates the unpredictability of outcomes under the league’s present set up.

      “Max Gawn has been the heart and soul of the Dees for years now, but this recent recovery from a terrible start has been driven by him. He was everywhere again, and with the game in the balance, he took several key marks to keep the ball in the Dees forward half.” - The Monday Knee Jerk Reaction: Round Ten Of course, it wasn’t the efforts of one man that caused this monumental upset, but rather the work of the coach and his assistants and the other 22 players who took the ground, notably the likes of Jake Melksham, Christian Petracca, Clayton Oliver and Kozzie Pickett but Max has been magnificent in taking ownership of his team and its welfare under the fire of a calamitous 0-5 start to the season. On Sunday, he provided the leadership that was needed to face up to the reigning premier and top of the ladder Brisbane Lions on their home turf and to prevail after a slow start, during which the hosts led by as much as 24 points in the second quarter. Titus O’Reily is normally comedic in his descriptions of the football but this time, he was being deadly serious. The Demons have come from a long way back and, although they still sit in the bottom third of the AFL pack, there’s a light at the end of the tunnel as they look to drive home the momentum inspired in the past four or five weeks by Max the Magnificent who was under such great pressure in those dark, early days of the season.

    • CASEY: Southport

      The Southport Sharks came to Casey. They saw and they conquered a team with 16 AFL-listed players who, for the most part, wasted their time on the ground and failed to earn their keep. For the first half, the Sharks were kept in the game by the Demons’ poor use of the football, it’s disposal getting worse the closer the team got to its own goal and moreover, it got worse as the game progressed. Make no mistake, Casey was far and away the better team in the first half, it was winning the ruck duels through Tom Campbell’s solid performance but it was the scoreboard that told the story.
