Anyone know the record of holding the balls paid against a side in a game, because I reckon we witnessed history tonight.

Speaks to Brisbane’s hunger tonight. Unfortunately it was a statement game from them.

And the umpires. They just didn’t pay it consistently both ways. Could we were done are usually play on and a few of their obviously called play on. Very frustrating

So it’s Max’s job to stop 3 Brisbane on ballers from reading his taps? Or is it the job of our 3 on ballers to get their hands on the footy?

If our mids can’t read Max’s taps, then heaven help us. They’ve played together long enough.

Then if either of these scenarios are real( and I think they are) we got real problems!

How many of Maxy's hit outs end up in Brisbanes hands

We win double the hit outs yet get smashed in clearances.  Not having a go at Max’s effort and performance but it is so frustrating to have such a dominant ruckman (who trains with his mids for hours during the week on clearance work) have the opposition mids turn up on match day and appear to be reading him better than our mids. I think we had at most 2 clearances in the last that were clean from tap work.  The rest went the Lions way or were nullified.

Do we know when Oliver hurt his hand, what’s he done and how long to recovery? Was that his only ailement? Or his struggling to cover the ground?

He is nowhere near his best this year - hasn’t had a dominant game yet. I know he is carrying a bit of baggage. Maybe this is all we can expect from now on.

You know you're a [censored] when Dayne Zorko, who is your teammate, calls you out on your behaviour.

I hope we quietly remember Noah Answerth's behaviour tonight and on the return game in Round 16, we play well enough that we can give something back to that [censored].

Pathetic.

Clearly we had a bunch of our best players underdone (Trac, Viney, Clarry, Brown, May and Petty), but I do think we made a tactical error that was clear by the middle of the second quarter.

We played the 2023 game style with a really aggressive press without Kozzy - so as opposed to the deeper lying defence that we've played the last few weeks.

We also refused to set up for the switch from stationary situations at half back, and went long down the line far too often from this position and from kick outs, which slung shot straight back to Brisbane forwards.

We knew we were going in underdone given the 3 games in 12 days (insane, this doesn't happen in any other sport in the world and think about how physically and emotionally taxing the modern game is), I think what we should have done is gone really hard from the start and tried to put some points on them, and then accept we'd fade away in the second half. Instead we went too defensive with ball movement from the top, and what broke this strategy down and made any strategy impossible really is our contest around the ball and in the air was just horrendous. So perhaps even with the above strategy we'd have been in a fair bit of trouble?

You can't play a really high press and get smashed in clearances like we were and expect to win. I've never seen us lose around the ground stoppages so comprehensively (we were -18 at one point in just stoppage clearances alone), and much of that was being flat around the contest, poor tackling efforts (Viney was clearly exhausted, his meekest game ever) and Max's insistence that he'd try and take the ball out of the ruck every time and kick it 10m up in the air to no advantage. This latter strategy was clearly not working from very early on and yet he persisted with it until the final quarter, where he started to tap to his feet and keep it in close, and we started to win centre clearance at least.

Tom McDonald was brilliant tonight though, May solid too, ANB tried hard as always and that's about it. Max tried to lift in the last quarter, and did, but it wasn't enough.

Put this one in the rear view mirror, have a break and plan for Richmond.

Towball umpire 15 to the bush leagues next week

He always crucifies us. I don’t know how the players take the field when he turns up. Reckon they should protest haha. Not sure what his bias is but it’s heavily against us. Or maybe he is just completely hopeless and every supporter from all teams feels that way. Anyway I can’t stand him.
Daniher threw the ball straight over Levers head right in front of him no 50. May pushes Daniher back behind the mark and the clumsy git drops the ball. 50. GOTTA BE CONSISTENTLY SOFT IF YOU ARE GONNA BE THAT TECHNICAL AND SOFT.  The late hit on Rivers be 50 most of the time if it had been Kozzie. It was just that sort of night with the usual useless umpiring that unfortunately went all against us. Evening up for the port game

[censored] no.

TMac was one of our best down back tonight. He's playing good football, finally. We can't mess that up now.

Unfortunately for Petty he has to produce as a forward or go play VFL.

Oh, and I maintain what I said about Brisbane supporters in the run in to this game. They are as smarmy as Zorko and whichever nuffy sledged Petty about crying again.

The ratings on SEN's website. Sadly, they are pretty accurate.

Max Gawn - A

Well on top in the ruck all night, but the Dees struggled to make anything of it. Still, the skipper gave it his all.

Trent Rivers - B+

One of the few who tried to inject some speed and run into the game for the Dees.

Jake Lever - B

Held up well despite the avalanche of entries. Kicked a rare goal late.

Tom McDonald - B

17 disposals and 8 marks shows he was a factor in their attempts to move the footy, even on a rough night.

Tom Sparrow - B-

Ed Langdon - B-

Steven May B-

Brisbane did their best to keep him quiet and deep inside defensive 50, but he still had a few intercepts and took the game on with corridor kicks.

Jack Viney - B-

Brisbane kept the game uncontested and wide - not ideal for the inside bull Viney who had minimal impact.

Blake Howes - C+

Kade Chandler - C+

Trying to run and make things happen, but didn't have a whole heap of help.

Judd McVee C+

Caleb Windsor - C

Ran hard and tried to make things happen all night. Is going to develop into a very handy wingman.

Alex Neal-Bullen - C

Koltyn Tholstrup - C-

Provided some energy on debut.

Taj Woewodin - C-

Subbed into the game early in the first quarter, but struggled to find the footy.

Jack Billings - C-

Jacob van Rooyen - D+

Showed some signs in the fourth term after a rough night.

Bayley Fritsch - D

Ice cold after an early goal. Second week in a row he's been well beaten - though last week he got off the chain and kicked three in a 10-minute burst.

Clayton Oliver - D

After a very quiet first half, Oliver spent some time at half back as the Dees tried to get him involved. Well off his best from previous years.

Christian Petracca - D

Maybe his worst performance in a long time, unfortunately. Minimal impact in the first half and a few desperation plays in the second half that didn't come off. He'll bounce back.

Harrison Petty - F

Didn't touch the footy through three-and-a-half quarters... Not that the ball came his way particularly often. Tried to 'tag' Harris Andrews, but wasn't a factor.

Ben Brown - F

Ben Brown has not had a disposal in five of his last eight quarters of footy.

Christian Salem - N/A

Suffered a hamstring injury early in the first quarter and was subbed out.

Why? He’s in his physical prime, not a kid or a veteran like JVR and BBB, he is a good contested mark at times and excellent on the lead, he’s got speed, agility.

Why just allow him to be icing when he can do so much more?

Quite simply, I don't think he the development in him to become a rounded player like you seem to want him to be. He does what he does exceptionally well and I'm happy with that.

There were a few typical Fritsch moments tonight that I was not happy with at all, but it was the midfield where we were soundly beaten. Taking aim at Fritsch after tonights game tells me you have had him in the gun for awhile just itching to pull the trigger.

I get it that this is a place that you can vent after a loss and I have loved you as a poster in previous years. So go ahead. I will disagree if I see fit. If there is anyone in the forward line that needs a spray it's Petty. Equal amount of disposals as Salem. Just horrendous.

The putting words in people's mouths thing is getting out of hand. Most of us are NOT slitting the wrists but simply saying the performance was not good enough which it wasn't. I don't see an issue with doing this. Yes it was nice to have a little fightback at the end, yes it helps percentage but please don't mask the poor performance with the not giving up routine.

The fact that we didn't show a whimper since from the first 5 mins of the first quarter and only did something when Brisbane's cue was in the rack has to tell you something.

We aren't negative Nellie's for saying these things and we will be at the next game. No need to gaslight people.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
