Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

I’m still confused by the language and the vastly different descriptions of exactly how Gus’s ‘retirement’ panned out.

Was it a forced retirement where the AFL said that he had to be medically retired, or was it completely Brayshaw’s decision?

I have heard both of these scenarios described in the media.  If it was the AFL’s call, then he should be paid entirely outside of the cap.

It was Gus' physician who told him it's in his best interests for his life going forward to retire.

How can you tell our club to pay his salary inside the cap when he's been medically retired by a coward dog after years without being concussed.

Re. Brayshaw’s payout;

”Fellow AFL 360 co-host Mark Robinson called for the funds to be taken from inside Melbourne’s salary cap.”

And then he goes on to qualify that with;

“My gut feel is if you sign someone to a long-term deal – I don’t want to be flippant about this but unless someone passes or literally can’t play football beyond circumstances it should go in the cap.”

ummm is being forced to medically retire pretty much exactly “can’t play football beyond circumstances”?

the Slobinator really Knows how to push my buttons.

I think in a round about way Robbo is actually arguing the case for Gus's contract to be paid outside of the cap.

I’m not sure he is capable of reverse psychology… in fact I’m not even convinced he knows which player he is talking about here

Sorry if it's been covered before.

Was Gus actually told by someone that he can't legally play or did he decide based on medical advice?

If the former who decides?

The club by advice from Drs?

Insurance company?

Afls board?

Cheers.

You probably wouldn't get out alive but you'd go down doing a good deed. Maybe if there were enough of us but I know I'd puke if I had to wear pies gear for even a second.

Best of luck mate. I admire you taking one for the team.

We will always speak fondly of you here.

Just Imagine how emotional Robbo would be if it was Zack Merrett. Not only back then,  but 6 months later now when discussing this media retirement topic. Instead he's cold and dispassionate (for once) to the suffering Gus has gone through. The bloke gets his knickers in a twist about anything else.

Could say the same about the rest of the media. If it was Daicos taken out and medically retired, how is McGuire arguing about whether it comes out of the cap or not, today? He would've erupted then and would still be erupting, flushed like a red tomato.  Lloyd and Merrett? L Mathews and Lachie Neale. Kornes and Rozee, Caro and Dustin Martin. All of these pr1cks would change their tune about the suspension and the cap talk, if it happened to their own player/club.

Instead it's remarkably quiet. Very Elephant in the Roomy.

You'll have to excuse me, I saw the incident again and saw that thug veer towards him. Roused me again into anger.

Even the announcement from the MFC in op says “”will be medically retired effective immediately “ not, “on Doctors advice Gus has decided to retire.”

I have seen it in a few places, the decision was made by others.

My view is if Brayshaw has acted on private medical advice, he forfeit's his contract ( unless there are specific provisions in his contract) and is ultimately able to draw down on insurance and other non salary cap related pay outs. .

If his retirement was forced by the AFL then frankly we shouldn’t be held liable and the AFL should exclude any payout from the salary cap.

So in both cases I don’t think there is much that MFC is liable for.

So , obviously you arent expecting a good outcome then,? What about if I smuggled in a bag of slitheras and discretely left the bag open and scarpered away, sledging Maynard, as I left?? GEEZUS i'm talking like a demented man now!🥴

I wonder if players have to pass a medical insurance review or is this a silly thought?

Rest assured JD it will never be forgotten by fans and players. A new rivalry has arisen and not in a good way.

I mentioned this on another thread but I think it is more appropriate here.

I liked how the GWS crowd booed that dog every time he got near the ball.  I hope that trend continues for the rest of the year.

(As an aside I really deplored how fans from all teams booed Goodes- it was not on. Similar for that young bloke who moved from North to Port [North supporters excepted]. Perhaps I’m a bit one eyed and biased- but I believe the Maynard situation is different. The difference being he deserves it, simple as that)

I think player managers and the AFLPA will be pushing hard for the Brayshaw money to not be put under the salary cap as well.

If it is, clubs are going to become extremely careful with signing long term deals and this would be a bad result for them.

I was wondering if that was because of his behavior on the day or the Gus incident.

Think it was more to do with the Toby Greene incident... but still happy when he gets booed either way

As a rule, I'm against gratuitously booing oppo players.

But all rules need some contextual flexibility, and im willing to make an exception in Maynard's case.

THE MEANING OF FOOTY by Whispering Jack

Throughout history various philosophers have grappled with the meaning of life. Aristotle, Aquinas, Kant, Nietzsche, Schopenhauer and a multitude of authors of diverse religious texts all tried. As society became more complex, the question became attached to specific endeavours in life even including sporting pursuits where such questions arose among our game’s commentariat as, “what is the meaning of football”? Melbourne coach Simon Goodwin must be tired of dealing with such a dilemma but,

Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n
