I suspect that one of the reasons for our closed sessions is that deep down under the Casey Snake Pit we are cloning players only to release them on alternative game days.

Secretly the match committee meet and decide which one of our clones will play

it's obvious... why else would we be training in secret half way to Gippsland !!

Of course not. Despite the belief held by many posters on this forum that our gameplan has not changed since 2021, it has been adjusted each preseason due to changes in our list and the way the opposition has responded to it. However, once the season gets underway, successful teams adhere to their gameplan, so when players are injured, there are VFL players available to step in and carry out the plan. The issue we faced last season—which I previously discussed—was that we lost so many important players, leaving us shorthanded. The cupboard was bare. It is difficult to suddenly and drastically alter a system that players have become accustomed to and react instinctively to something different, especially during a finals campaign.

it's ok that's your view I don't agree with it, I just don't wear coloured glasses when I watch football we have faults you don't see them, I called it in 22 and 23 so i am interested to see in 24 how we go about it.

The younger boys, particularly the talls struggled.  Adams and Verrell were examples of this.  Sestan is not a natural athlete but is working hard on his fitness by the look of things as is Jefferson.  For a bloke of Tomlinson's size his running is outstanding.  He ran with Nibbler until there was about a lap and a half to go and then just went.  I thought he was on his last half lap when he broke away but no.  He was so strong and was really impressive.  But that doesn't mean he's a different footballer to last year, he's just an outstanding athlete.

When I go to these sessions I'm really only interested in the young blokes because in the main that's where the improvement will come from but it's such early days it's not really realistic to take much away. But in the wet last week I was impressed with how good the ball handling was from all players.  Verrell did some impressive stuff below his knees and it just shows he's got some skills which are rare in big men.  He may be a key position player prospect as well as a ruck.  His issue is his stamina, he couldn't play ruck at AFL level purely based on not being able to get to enough contests.

McAdam is another to impress.  He's just got that magical indigenous ability to make the difficult look easy and I'm really looking forward to seeing what he can do.  But he was another struggling with his running so that will be a watch.

As others have said The Kolt has swagger but it doesn't look like arrogance to me.  And he can kick it, both distance and accuracy.  He did a really good time trial so looks to have the fitness to play early.  Windsor hasn't stood out but what he's done he's done well.  Kicking is good and ball handling is clean.  I've liked what I've seen Kynan Brown do but he's as skinny as so it will be a while before he's ready even if he's got the skills, and Marty Hore just looks at home.

I've been a track watcher for a good long time now and I well remember watching James Strauss train and thinking he could be anything.  Training form at this time of year is very problematic in terms of predicting players development but we look pretty good.

As I've read the other posters comments the common comment is "I'm looking forward to seeing *insert player* get a go this year.  The issue of course is there will be very few spots up for grabs if we have a reasonably fit list.  Billings and McAdam can both play and would be in front of the young guys. Howes and Laurie (yes, I'm still a believer) have multiple preseasons under their belt and Woey looked promising last year for a second year player.  The question is "who for". I mean how does Kolt get a go?  Who does McAdam get in for and Billings as well.  Spargo has been impressive.

This brings me to my final point.  At this time of year we have unbelievable depth with far too few spots for the players.  But when we've lost a few games it's more like "we are just swapping the deck chairs on the Titanic".

Surely hunter could go, he looks so slow for a wingman, with little penatration in his kicking.

I don't agree with underestimating Hunter's worth! Here's a quick comparison with other prominent wingman types.

Hunter: games 197, av disposals 23

Ed Langdon: 157, 20

Bailey Smith: 103, 22

Isaac Smith: 280, 21

Not possible because NOT two people.

The Club may’ve got the idea from an episode of The Brady Bunch wherein a pair of glasses is all that separated Peter from his doppelgänger (see below). It worked a treat; even Peter’s siblings were fooled!

You are obviously not OK with my view. You immediately launch the tired accusation that posters like me and others that have a similar view are wearing coloured glasses if we don't agree with your view. Its kids playground stuff. It is simple to say that the game plan is the issue without providing any support or logic. Its lazy commentary. I find it unbelievable that you then double down on it and gloat about how perceptive you have been over the previous two years. Are you that single-minded that you cannot accept other explanations for the recent failures in finals?

This maybe so, BUT, weakness is slowness , and what you do with the pill.Got others  to put pressure on him this year in Howes, Woewodin,Windsor & Brayshaw etc.

Agree that hunter is not that quick.

From my perspective that is only an issue if there aren't enough quick players accross the team to balance it out.

But we didn't last season and it is no coincidence the two draftees are apparently good athletes who can cover the ground at speed. And as you suggest woey and Howes both have good toe. 

Such players should help hunter as opposed to being a threat for his role (which in time they no doubt will be).

It's a bit like kicking skills. I've long been of the view we haven't had enough elite kicks. And that hurt us last year.

But teams don't need more than say 5-6 elite kicks and 5-6 above average kicks. If they do they can carry some butchers.

The issue comes when there aren't enough elite and above average kicks as the turnover merchants, that every team have, have an outsize impact.

There was a lot of talk about our accuracy in our losses in big games, and fair enough too. In large part accuracy is a function of skill (sure ability to handle pressure is a factor but the stronger the technique the better mitigation of pressure).

But our turnovers on transition were just as big a factor, particularly in our last two losses against the blues. The impact of turnovers on transition often get overlooked I reckon.

Sure it's obvious when a turnover directly results in an oppo goal (and in our losses to the blues their score from turnover was almost double our season average - and ultimately cost us the semi with vineys turnover to weitering with 90 seconds to go).

But it's the opportunity cost from turnovers on transition that really hurt, whether the oppo score or not. That's to say a turnover breaks a potential scoring chain for us and costs us a scoring opportunity. 

Again, no coincidence that Taylor targeted players with good kicking skills.

On the DL podcast Taylor said they went best available, but I don't really believe that (though he did equivocate a bit to be fair).

I think they drafted more for need - specificlly speed, athletisim and foot skills.

I havre said it all before, so before I answer it why do you think we failed in 22 and against the pies in 23, 69 entries to 37 what does that tell you?
