I wouldn't count on it.  A big bonus if he ends up becoming a regular at senior level.

That's probably unfair as im only going on his brief highlights and career stats and genuinly hope he turns out to be a handy player at the Demons. 

But aside from his ruck work (where he has a slight edge over Shack) and forward work (where, believe it or not  Shack has a slight edge), him and Shack have eerily similar (poor to very poor) career averages in the rest of their general playing stats.

Anything's possible i guess but i reckon he would probably need at least 2 pre-seasons in our system before posssibly showing any significant signs of improvement.

Is he signed on for the '25' season?

From memory, Curnow had some issue with police… in his draft year. It may have been drinking driving. He dropped down the order as a result.

I thought this was something that Carlton were happy to have out there (given they had his brother they knew all about him) which enabled them to get him (and McKay) in the one draft!

Might well have been. Curnow had been hovering around the best 4 or 5 rated players for a chunk of the season and in the mix for our selection before dropping late. A few thought he was the most talented player in it at the time.

Correct there were disciplinary issues with drink driving that popped up. Recruiters were also unsure what position he was suited to as he seemed like a bit of a tweener. At 192cms he seemed too small for a KPF role and he'd be playing bursts in the midfield looking to develop as an inside mid. Hindsight shows his athleticism ensured he made it as a KPF, but it did take him him 6 years before clicking properly from both injury and form perspective. He's 27 before next season starts, so he's not as young as some think, further proof tall forwards generally take time. Its why JVR is extremely impressive for a 19 year old and well on his way to being one of the best KPFs in the league. Interestingly we were interested in Curnow as a big bodied midfielder rather than a forward but went with Weideman after selecting Oliver as an inside mid. 

On Caddy, he doesn't have the same athleticism that Curnow does. He doesn't have an explosive burst of pace off the mark, doesn't have much of a leap on him, struggles if he doesn't mark it, and kicking lacks penetration (barely makes it 50 metres).Though they're similar height, Curnow is far more physically blessed than Caddy appears to be. Really the only strengths I see with Caddy are aggression, and ability to read the ball in the air well and clunk marks at full extension when one on one. Not sure those strengths are enough to make it as a good AFL KPF at his height and don't think he's a top 10 pick personally.

I think you’re underselling Caddy’s athleticism, his agility is great and his pace is good given he’ll have a powerful frame and won’t be matching it with skinny back flankers.

His kicking penetration looks fine to me too, but he’d be in for a fair amount of work with Choc Williams to get consistency. 

Would be nice if he was a little taller or a little cleaner with the ball but to me it comes down to how sticky his hands are. If the belief is he’ll hold a good share of his marks then I’m fully on board.

I was with you at the start of your post about Curnow, but this last part is very different to my observations of Caddy. 

Curnow slipped and I think you're right that it was very little to do with the drink driving and almost entirely about questions regarding whether he could play key forward at AFL level with his size ("only" 192cm) or whether he'd have to be a midfielder/flanker. Ironically, the exact issues people are discussing with Caddy. 

As for talking about Caddy's athleticism, I think you're completely wrong. Caddy is a very athletic and powerful player, which are some of his real strengths. He jumps at the ball, is strong at ground level and strong defensively. He is a powerful kick over distance and wins contests that are very difficult to win. Like Curnow he plays taller because he's got long arms. I think you've misjudged his ability because you've started at the wrong spot with his power and athleticism.

Recruiters and coaches don’t worry themselves over a couple of centre meters. They look at the ability to play a position, their skill level, and their attitude/character. 
 

JVR and May stand at 193 cms. Cripps is 195cms.

I'm personally not keen on him at our first pick, but will back JT in as he doesn't make many mistakes.

Just think one of Curtin or Sanders would be the smarter option if we keep pick 6.

Yes, if this was the first and only video of Caddy then he'd be lucky to make Bell Park's list.

But have a look at his VFL game for the Blues or one of the other games they have on video. There's a reason why others have suggested he's a likely top 10 pick and with Sanders earmarked for the Dogs at No.5. we have to look closely at him.

If Sanders is earmarked by the Dogs for 5, which may well be true, because the kid is a gun, it means one of Curtin or Watson is going to slide to us. i suspect that's who we will take. 

there is definitely talk the club rates Caddy highly though so i wouldn't rule out a trade up. if we could flip 11 into 7 we could get Caddy and Curtin and that'd be a pretty good result overall.

Watson to the Hawks at 4, Sanders to the Dogs at 5 is the early mail, which makes it Curtin the only one standing from the so called top 6 (non-academy).

But I always stress at this stage of the process the narratives about sliders and bolters are always nonsense, it's a small sample size of both media and games for these kids. Cal Twomey and the Rookie Me guys are about the only ones who are seriously studying the draft and clubs are tight lipped about their orders. Most of the other journos just repeat the same stuff. For all we know Curtin might have been overvalued the whole time, Caddy might be undervalued and there could be a stack of other names in the 6-11 range 

I remember Twomey never had Jackson near his top 3 and was surprised by it when he learned of Melbourne's intentions and then after the draft a number of clubs confirmed they had him very highly rated too.
