Apart from those three minor details, we've got ourselves a little gem

So you think he’s a chance?!?!

First picked

He came cheap, he's depth. If everyone's fit he probably doesn't get a game, at least on current output. Let's see if another pre-season - with the knowledge that it could be his last unless he steps up - makes a difference.

Just needs to practice kicking goals, he's fluffed too many, the rest of his game is okay but goal kicking is weirdly awful.

Also keep in mind before last season he had played 11 games in 2 seasons.

It can take a while to get back confidence in your body after injuries, Petty is in the same boat.

Let see if he is any better next season with a full, uninterupted preseason.

Agreed - especially on the cheap part.
When a player of Billings' talent is available at that price, you roll the dice; similar to Hunter the year before.
Sometimes pays off, sometimes doesn't.

I was very pleased when we picked him up and there is plenty of time to turn it around.  He's been the scapegoat for a lot of our short comings this year and, in a team with Petracca and Oliver playing at their best, his skill set would be better utilised.

In our final two games this season Billings had 23 and 18 disposals. That represents a good return for the position he was playing in. The problem we have is that posters form an early opinion of a player and it's very difficult to change that perception. I think we need to acknowledge improvement. I'm sure the coaching panel has!

There is a reason why players are ‘cheap’ or ‘depth’…..especially when they were high draft picks.
We don’t need any more list cloggers.

Define "list cloggers"

In fairness, he played 16 games for the year - that suggests he's genuine depth and considered in, at least, the top 26 players on the list.  By all reports he got a good character, trains well and keeps out of trouble.  Definitely worth having around, especially with Casey struggling with mature talent.

At last, a bit of a balanced approach.

Billings accumulates possessions but his disposals don't stand out and are not dynamic

And he freezes in front of goal. Depth only but how many depth players does the club need?  The issue with depth players is there is often very little upside and they often can't play an effective role

But to single out Billings alone would be unfair.  We've got about 10-12 players in a similar vein (some have upside and not all are midfielders)

In a good team there isn't room for too many depth players but it must be said that we are no longer a good team.  We're an ok team which once had a stellar midfield

Now that same midfield is B- at best and bottom 6 material

Watching the finals highlights how far we've fallen away with regards to midfield strength

Retirements, injuries, loss of form, age, lack of leg speed, effort, energy, application and endeavour are all contributing factors

And our midfield teamwork has dropped right away.  As well as that, our delivery forward is often below standard

It's time for a midfield rebuild as Gawn & Viney are getting old, Brayshaw is finished, Oliver is well below his best (2 years now) Sparrow hasn't come on and who knows with Petracca?

Rivers has been good and Kozzie could be an effective midfield weapon but we need an injection of new midfield talent

Windsor & Tholstrup look to have bright future's but both are in the development stage

Ideally, 2 midfield additions in the upcoming draft but that means we have to get hold of another top 10 pick

While Jack hasn't been a Demon for long and not admired like others, he is one of us so would like to congratulate Jack and Sarah on the arrival of their new baby, Oscar.

Hope he doesn't fumble. 😉

That comment needs one of these 😉, the closest emoji to 'tongue-in-cheek' coz I know you weren't serious.

  • REPORT: North Melbourne

It’s late February. Two teams widely predicted to finish near the foot of the AFL table in 2026 face off against each other in sweltering 30-degree heat deep in outer suburbia in a match simulation with fresh new faces and uneven team numbers. There are no nearby sheep stations on offer; the result promises nothing more than bragging rights for the winner. Nevertheless, the loser appears hopelessly adrift, whereas the other seems to have found its footing after a couple of years of struggle – perhaps a hint at bigger things to come?
