We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

Any danger we can actually play a final round game (ie -round 24, previously round 23) at the MCG?

The last time we played a final round game at the MCG, was 2018 against GWS and we ended up having a good finals campaign.

2019 V North at Hobart

2020 V North at Hobart in the pre covid fixture

2021 V Geelong in Geelong

2022 V Brisbane in Brisbane

2023 V Sydney in Sydney

The compromise is we typically play at home round 1. When did we last travel interstate round 1? 2020 v wce and before that I think we've only done it two more times ever.

Spot on.

Round 1 2020 @ West Coast

Round 1 1998 @ Freo

Round 1 1991 @ West Coast

It's actually remarkable how little amount of times we've travelled in round 1, and never outside of Perth.

I hope people realise that if we didn't have the Alice Springs game, we'd be given a home game at Marvel instead, just as Collingwood and Richmond have. There are no extra MCG games to be had.

I would more than happily punt the Alice Springs game in exchange for a home Marvel game and retain our 13 games (10 home/3 away) at the G.

Aside from a giving the locals a game of footy to watch and the "feel good vibes", I'm struggling to see the upside from a footballing department perspective of playing games in the Alice.

I wonder if Goodwin gets excited when the fixture comes out and sees that we're in the Alice in round 16 followed by the inevitable 6 day break at the fast paced Marvel.

Don't we still have academy rights in Alice Springs? Losing the NT game might mean we forfeit that. I personally don't mind the Alice game ,I like the community stuff the club does in Alice and I'm sure the players like to get away from the Melbourne bubble too and it gives me a warm fuzzy feeling watching the local kids with their Demon merchandise on. And warm, fuzzy was definitely required there this year with the weather.

You either missed my point or I didn't explain myself clearly enough. If the latter, I'll clear things up now.

Of course we would get 11 home games in Melbourne if we chose to call time on the Alice Springs game. No club plays 11 home games at the MCG, even Richmond and Collingwood are forced to play home games at Docklands, but that wasn't my point, whether we play 11 at the MCG or 10 at the MCG and 1 at Docklands.

We play a certain number of interstate games a year - all bar one being away games. We play a certain number of away games at the MCG and Docklands. My point was that one of those 'away' games at the MCG or Docklands would probably end up being interstate if we pulled out of Alice Springs (for instance, against Hawthorn), so we would in effect play the same number of interstate games, whether we kept the Alice Springs game or got rid of it.

I hope that clears things up and show's that my opinion probably does have some accuracy to it. Well it's not really an 'opinion', it's a suspicion...

I don't think there is any guarantee that would happen continually each season. The fixture is a movable object and not all seasons draws are alike. It may occur but not as a definite part of our fixture annually and I can't see the Club asking for it necessarily. But it could nevertheless happen on occasions.

Hi Jaded. I'm of course speaking about why I like that we play in Hobart. I don't think Maxy was too complimentary of the surface in our last game but North play there four times a year and I can't recollect any major injuries they've suffered over that time so I'd put it down to coincidence. By way of comparison Rick Lever's ruptured ACL and T-Mac's Lisfranc were both done at Docklands. The exact same injuries as Tommo and Petts.

I thought that Lever did an ACL at Alice?

Collingwood is the other participant on Kings Birthday but they manage to get a proper bye - they played the Sunday after giving them 13 days break vs our 10 for a Thursday night game. Just because we play certain games doesn't mean we should be punished for it. The AFL compromises the draw enough I'm sure they could figure out a way to give us a proper break over the midseason bye.

Could, of course, buy why would they given that we roll over and accept it every year?  (and the same for KP)

if we do away with the alice game that's over $1m off the bottom line as it does away with the nt govt sponsorship

given the current economic climate, i'd love to know where people think that a $1m sponsor is coming from

We have had a pretty good record at Alice and other than this year it has always been played under excellent conditions.  (This year I believe was the coldest, and one of the wettest days ever recorded there)

Where did you get $1mill. ?

it's always been $500,000. It's most likely we could have this game substituted by a Marvel game which could be any if the home ground Marvel teams. A game vs Bullies or Saints is an away fixture and any interstate team we wouldn't make any real profit from anyway.

Despite this our record at Marvel is good since we started winning there. We could get 28/30,000 plus vs Saints or Dogs not sure if that's a profit or not.

This post is in response to Dr Gonzo's above about a $1million he believes we get out of the  NT sponsorship.

I have no confidence in the AFL fixture for 2024. Dont be surprised if we get flicked interstate in R1 or 2, punishment for going out in straight sets in '23.

Collingwoods draw will be the one to watch followed by the Swans and Bluebaggers.

Expect AFL  to show enormous amounts of love for Carlton next season. AFL want a Blues flag now that Pies snagged one.

We dont count.

Yeah I like the Sunday 1:10pm games. Game is over by 3:45pm and you've still got the late afternoon/early evening to do stuff after.

Also hoping for more Saturday 1:45pm/2:10pm games.

Don’t hold your breath unless we slip out of GF contention. Poor rating time for the media. We are destined for a lot of night games again which is good for sponsors but poor for me.

It's the next leg of the journey to being a bigger club.

The other thing we will lose if we stop going to Alice is maybe 5-10k of memberships as these deals are often partly paid by the Govt taking out memberships which allows them to give out free tickets

Yep expect that:

  • We will likely play Carlton and Collingwood twice which would be 3 Friday nights and 1 Monday
  • We want front ended interstate trips so that the back end of the season has less travel and more games at the G/Marvel.

I'd like the following to not occur which seem to have plagued our fixtures of late:

  • Not to travel in the final round.
  • Reduce our non Gather Round interstate fixtures from 7 to 6.
  • Not to play Geelong on a Thursday night in Geelong.
  • Not to play Geelong in Geelong, period.
  • None of this 10 day break nonsense after Kings B'day. Give us a proper bye
  • A 7 day break post Alice Springs. Not 6 days as per last 2 years.
  • No back to back travel either before or after Gather Round.
  • No 4 week absence from the MCG which occurred in the second half of 2022.
  • Not a previous issue, but not to play GC in Darwin, but I fear our turn will come soon.

Other than that I don't think our 2022 and 2023 fixtures were overly disastrous and unfair.

I understand the need for the dollars from the Nt game plus it's good for footy.

But we have a better record at the G and less fatigue from travel by playing at home.

But ultimately we want flags. Focus on wins and cups and we will be better off. Given the amount of travel we did this year including the never ending compulsory trip to Kardinia, I'm all for giving the Nt venue a miss.

Seriously any team that has to play in Darwin needs it to be immediately before their bye, or at very least an 8 day break.

teams we'll play twice:

  1. brisbane
  2. carlton
  3. collingwood
  4. fremantle
  5. gc17
  6. port adelaide
  7. western bulldogs

teams we'll play once:

  1. adelaide
  2. essendon

  4. gw$
  5. hawthorn
  6. north melbourne
  7. richmond
  8. st. kilda

geelong at morder, north in tassie, and probably peptides for gil's gather round again

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
