Thanks for these posts mate. I know this email will likely fall on deaf ears but it's a good email and I'd definitely be forwarding to some other outlets.

Cheers Layzie. Have been listening to Gerard this morning and he is very much in our camp which is good. He certainly has influence on AFL thinking. I deliberately hadn't listened to Cornes, knowing how he 'thinks'. Apparantley he has said 'only people who have never played the game would believe Maynard to be guilty'. Gerard took a couple of calls after that who, whilst not reaching Cornes' unmatchable low, still pointed the finger a bit at Brayshaw.

They have convinced me to look at history differently. JFK should have seen the bullet coming. He has to accept some of the blame.  FFS!

Would our perspective be different if we were on the other side of this?  Not sure...I'd like to think our players have a bit more sense than to jump full steam at another player running full stem right towards them like a game of chicken.  That never seemed like a good idea, pretty obvious outcome whether you get the spoil or not, someone is going to get pretty badly hurt.

That's exactly what Kozzy did earlier this year. He was suspended and the act was widely admonished on DL, quite rightly. I was certainly one of them. I empasise that it was the act, and not the person, that disappointed us. He got his right whack for his action. So must Maynard.

I am really struggling to see how people think Maynard’s thought process was anything other than ‘if I don’t get the smother, I’ll take a body’.

His intent may not have been to absolutely hurt Brayshaw, but he definitely made the decision to jump knowing body contact would happen. This is where it begins and ends, he went ahead with his chosen action knowing contact would happen.

NBA players can run full steam at players to try and block passes/shots in the exact same fashion and this outcome doesn’t occur.

You just have to look at his previous 'body of work' to know that this is highly likely.

Poor Bullet got the full force of JFK's skull 😭😭.

Honestly I am fuming and don't get me started with the mob out there on Twitter, absolute clowns or blatantly lowlifes making fun of Gus.

This 'debate' about a football action is irrelevant.

If you choose to tackle or bump or smother and KO someone you are out. Doesn't matter what your intentions are.

[unless you are from 'big' club and its a final] So corrupt

Precisely. At some stage before he left the ground he would have known contact was inevitable and unavoidable and he did nothing to mitigate the extent of impact, in fact he did the one thing that would almost ensure a disastrous outcome by turning his shoulder.

Support the club, don't consume any other AFL media. If you had an AFL membership just burn it and get an MFC membership.

I've never contemplated AFL membership. I feel like getting one just so I can burn it. I have been a MCC member for 25 years but never relinquished my 45 year full Melbourne membersip. There is no AFL to me without my club. I am also listening a lot less to the AFL media. I haven't watched any Ch.9 footy show for many years and others are being dropped regualry.  Thank God for the Demonland Podcast. The only thing you can guarantee I'll listen to.

The boys club mentality of former players and media agitators is infuriating. Even David King, the so called cheerleader for protecting the head, has failed to condemn the Maynard act, stating I won't be surprised if the ban is upheld. Glad I wasn't there on the night, would have been a test trying to keep it together amongst the insensitive arrogant Pies supporters.

I have been left so angry and upset since Thursday night.

I'm angry at Maynard who did this to an apparent friend.  Jeez, if I had friends like that, who needs enemies?  I'm angry about his crocodile tears, about his decision to charge (I maintain it was a charge, not a smother, given he went at him full pelt, feet off the ground before Gus even kicked the ball) then turned the shoulder instead of attempting to push Gus, which would have had a totally different outcome.  He is a dog, and I don't care who I upset by calling him that.  From now on I'm referring to him as The Dog.

I'm angry at the Collingwood filth for chanting "Collingwoooooood" while Gus was unconscious on the turf, for cheering The Dog every time he went near the ball, for daring to complain about Viney remonstrating with The Dog (jeez, if they're more outraged by Viney pushing and shoving than they are about The Dog's act of flattening Gus, their values are screwed), of trying to excuse the chanting and cheering as a response to The Dog being booed, of not showing one ounce of concern over Gus, and for their putrid behaviour on social media. They vindicated my pure, unadulterated, visceral hatred for The Filth.

I'm angry at the media for not only putting this down to "a football act", "what could he have done differently?" but then in the case of Tom Browne and Tom Morris, putting the blame on Gus.  Those two can join The Dog category.  They deserve to lose their journalism accreditation for that piece of filth.  That's not journalism, that's equally a dog act.

More than anything I'm upset for Gus, the impact this has on him, and the fact this could have longlasting affects on his future wellbeing.  I would be very surprised if he does play football again, and I would not be surprised if he decides to pull the pin on his career after this.  He is an intelligent man, he'll make the right decision for him.  I just hope his health will not be adversely affected by this dog act.  But if he does decide it's the end of his career, I hope to hell he sues the [censored] of The Dog.

Don't forget to add Cornes to that group, and we may be missing a couple more.

Who’s actually taking in football media these days? It seems everyone I know can’t stand it anymore and has switched off. I can’t help but feel the afl is headed for trouble with its poor management and horrific media arm. It has some serious things to sort out

Knowing Peter its possible that he could be politicising the situation; he has fought the 'head-in-the-sand' then 'lip-service' approach the AFL has taken for more than 15-years re concussions issues. If Peter doesn't have inside information about Angus's condition and is politicising the situation then I can understand why many people will find this to be distasteful, but I can understand why Peter would do it.

"What could Maynard have done differently?"

For a start, not making a largely unrealistic attempt at a smother by leaving the ground at speed and then turning your shoulder inside to knock someone in a completely vulnerable position into next week, causing the likely end of their AFL career and potential long term detrimental health issues?

Amazing how we see players smothering the ball 100's of times week in week out yet only (to my memory) have we seen such a catastrophic outcome in this case alone.

Huge line in the sand moment for the AFL, they've done the right thing by grading it appropriately.

Footy act or not (what a stupid term that is by the way), severe impact is severe impact and it must be punished.

In Maynard's defense I felt he hung near Angus trying to check on him. And I don't believe he intended to do this kind of harm.

But it's a bit like the bloke who throws a shove or a punch at a pub and then gets a shock when his victim drops. Of course he didn't mean to knock them into next week but when you play stupid games you win stupid prizes.

Maynard deliberately tried to put physical pressure on the kicker. And did it in a careless, uncontrolled manner that resulted in concussion.

Deanox this is probably the most reasoned post that sums up the situation perfectly.

Yes.  A definite line in the sand moment.  Will they crumble under Collingwood and media pressure?  Wouldn’t put it past them.  “Poor guy is remorseful and could miss a premiership”.  For this reason alone I hope that whoever meets them in the preliminary final beats the hell out of them, and wipes the smug “premierships a cakewalk” smirk off their faces.

However is there any higher grading available ?  There used to be an infraction known as a charge - is this still there?   This was a brutal assault, after the play, and deserves whatever maximum is available for said infraction.

Clearly lots of challenges ahead for Gus.
He was knocked out for two minutes. Two minutes.
Despite all the media chanting the fair go for Maynard, to be clear, Gus is the victim.

He will have reassess his future with Danielle and his family and his medical support. Serious concussion is highly likely to refer to challenges later in life. Gus will likely soon be having a young family and his long term health is the priority.

Yet it’s disgusting that there has been very little concern from the media, including ex AFL players (not experts, ex AFL players) and especially from irrational journalists like Tom Browne and Tom Morris.  I’m disgusted at their lack of understanding.
Duty of care. Changed body to turn and bump.  High contact. Severe impact.  That’s the facts.  That’s the Truth. That’s at least 4 weeks.

    WILDCARDS by KC from Casey

Casey’s season continued to drift into helplessness on Sunday when they lost another home game by a narrow margin, this time six points, in their Round 13 clash with North Melbourne’s VFL combination. The game was in stunning contrast to their last meeting at the same venue when Casey won the VFL Wildcard Match by 101 points. Back then, their standout players were Brodie Grundy and James Jordon who are starring in the AFL with ladder leaders, the Sydney Swans (it turned out to be their last

    LIFE SUPPORT by Whispering Jack

With Melbourne’s season hanging on a thread, Saturday night’s game against North Melbourne unfolded like a scene in a hospital emergency department.  The patient presented to the ward in a bad way. Doctors and nurses pumped life-saving medication into his body and, in the ensuing half hour, he responded with blood returning to his cheeks as he stirred back to life. After a slight relapse, the nurses pumped further medication into the bloodstream and the prognosis started looking good as the

    THE HUNTER by The Oracle

Something struck me as I sat on the couch watching the tragedy of North Melbourne’s attempt to beat Collingwood unfold on Sunday afternoon at the MCG.    It was three quarter time, the scoreboard had the Pies on 12.7.79, a respectable 63.16% in terms of goal kicking ratio. Meanwhile, the Roos’ 18.2.110 was off the charts at 90.00% shooting accuracy. I was thinking at the same time of Melbourne’s final score only six days before, a woeful 6.15.51 or 28.57% against Collingwood’s 14.5.89
