We play Geelong at their hoe ground every year. Collingwood haven't played there for 24 years. Their last game there was in 1999. The AFL don't treat team fairly we should stand up to them and demand a fair go.

    Because the filth breed like flies and have not learnt to swarm down the highway and maggotize a place more than a few clicks from filth park, like the MCG.

    Write to the club and tell them. While you are at it tell them not to sell home games interstate.

    If you are respectful and constructive they’ll listen and respond.

    Was that 6th word a typo or a descriptive term for their ground?  Surprised it passed the auto censor 😮

    The answer of course is that we are Melbourne and they are Collingwood, and Geelong get to pick and choose who they play where - the AFL have no interest whatsoever in fairness of the FIXture.  It is all about $$$$$.

    Because the draw is unfairly biased towards the wealthier bigger drawing clubs.

    All about money in the coffers, nothing else.

    It's bizarre that the competition doesn't alternate between home and away. Its fair and common sense. It's how it's done in every league in every sport that I know of.

    This is a given, but what I don't understand, is why play a top drawing earner at Tax Payer Park with a ground capacity of 21,000 when you could have pulled 60K+ at the G or even 40K+ at Marvel? Both venues were free on Saturday.

    Money of course. At least we’ve had a crack at Geelong on the G in 18, 20 (write-off), 2021.

    The more bizarre fixture quirk in recent times is not playing the Eagles at the G since 14. Maybe they’ll give us a 10yr reunion next year.

    I’m hoping with the upgrades to their narrow little dung hill this might change and some of the protected clubs such as Collingwood, Richmond, Carlton May finally get shunted down there from next season

    Because the same argument applies to every Melb-based club and particularly Collingwood, Richmond, Essendon and Carlton. 

    They have to play some Melb-based clubs at GMHBA (they currently have 9 games there and can’t host all 8 interstate sides so there are 2-4 games a year for Melb-based clubs to play).

    It routinely means it’s us, St Kilda, the Dogs or North. 

    The AFL continues to let them play two home games at the G. I don’t know whether that’s the AFL forcing Geelong, or Geelong asking for it to make money and/or get more games on the G. Regardless, until that ends and Geelong plays all 11 home games in Geelong, which is what should be happening, we will continue to be overburdened with trips down there to offset the absence of the bigger sides. 

    In the interim, it beggars belief that Hawthorn, in some respects a smaller club than us and currently a weak on-field club, gets to avoid the trip. They should be down there next year. So should Carlton and Essendon, two sides who haven’t succeeded in finals in a decade.

    And as I said to the cats supporters around me if they built a proper size stadium they would get finals there.

    But since they decided to add on only a tiny amount of seats for a ridiculous amount of money instead or razing it to the ground and building a 60-70k seater enjoy the home finals in Melbourne.

    Still it is quite remarkable that extinct Fitzroy has played there more than Collingwood.

    I would buy this argument in 2011-2021, but not anymore.

    The AFL missed out on 30,000 extra attendees if they played this game at the G on a Friday or Saturday.

    19,000 people at a Victorian game featuring the last 2 premiers, both Victorian sides, is a stinker from a financial and brand perspective.

    The AFL just completely stuffed this fixture up.

    fair point. but i imagine the Cats and the ground are guaranteed so many home games per year. the AFL picks the lowest drawing teams to play there

      Of course, it’s not the backline, you might argue and you would probably be right. It’s the boot studder (do they still have them?), the midfield, the recruiting staff, the forward line, the kicking coach, the Board, the interchange bench, the supporters, the folk at Casey, the head coach and the club psychologist  It’s all of them and all of us for having expectations that were sufficiently high to have believed three weeks ago that a restoration of the Melbourne team to a position where we might still be in contention for a finals berth when the time for the midseason bye arrived. Now let’s look at what happened over the period of time since Melbourne overwhelmed the Sydney Swans at the MCG in late May when it kicked 8.2 to 5.3 in the final quarter (and that was after scoring 3.8 to two straight goals in the second term).

      Casey’s unbeaten run was extended for at least another fortnight after the Demons overran a persistent Essendon line up by 29 points at ETU Stadium in Port Melbourne last night. After conceding the first goal of the evening, Casey went on a scoring spree from about ten minutes in, with five unanswered majors with its fleet of midsized runners headed by the much improved Paddy Cross who kicked two in quick succession and livewire Ricky Mentha who also kicked an early goal. Leading the charge was recruit of the year, Riley Bonner while Bailey Laurie continued his impressive vein of form. With Tom Campbell missing from the lineup, Will Verrall stepped up to the plate demonstrating his improvement under the veteran ruckman’s tutelage. The Demons were looking comfortable for much of the second quarter and held a 25-point lead until the Bombers struck back with two goals in the shadows of half time. On the other side of the main break their revival continued with first three goals of the half. Harry Sharp, who had been quiet scrambled in the Demons’ first score of the third term to bring the margin back to a single point at the 17 minute mark and the game became an arm-wrestle for the remainder of the quarter and into the final moments of the last.
