Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Thank you for your continued support & understanding. Go Dees.

Best Melbourne 22 Seen In Your Time

Recommended Posts

I've put together a best 22 in my time following the Dees..  My earliest memories are from 1998... So basing this off from 1998 to current day.

FB: Whelan May Frawley
HB: Lever Rivers Jetta
C: Green Jones Yze
HF: Bruce Schwarz Davey
FF: Farmer Neitz Robertson
R: Gawn Oliver Petracca
INT: J.Viney J.McDonald
J. White N.Brown

Found it a little harder than I first thought..  Especially with the lean years around the Neeld era. Finding a CHF wasnt easy & the ox was past his best by then but couldnt think if anyone else.

I suspect there will be a few current players in this list in a few years time.

Will be interested in others teams.

It's hilarious being old -- I'd have to find room for Robbie Flower, Greg Wells, Brian Wilson, Peter Moore and a few others

One of the hardest parts of this question is whether a player gets named based on their whole career, or how they performed at their peak. If it's the former, it often tends to favour some older posts with complete careers!

I reckon for the era it's a pretty good crack though, well done.

I'd think Hibbo might give Rivers a run for that spot, Fritsch for Bruce as Wells mentioned, and I'd probably give Langdon the nod on the wing over Green (move to the bench over Brown).

Great job.

Started following the Dees in 1994 as a 7 year old.

Whelan May Wight

Davey Lever Brown

Johnstone T Viney Tingay

Yze Schwartz Robertson

Farmer Lyon Neitz

Fol Gawn Petracca Oliver

Int Stynes Green Jones Fritsch

Loving Neitz as the ‘third tall’! Tried to find a place for Jacovich - not actually sure I ever saw him play. Also, I had to pick the moustachioed Scotsman over Jetta.

Fun thread.

Pretty good - although I think you are way overvaluing Brown. If Brett Lovett was finished by 94, then I think Salem has easily got Brown covered, and Bowey will too pretty soon.

You’re right. Lovett was by far the better player. A lot of this was based on hazy sentimentality and I loved Brown’s pace off half back and for some reason, I don’t remember Lovett all that well.

Funny the players that stand out from your childhood. As soon as I saw the thread, one of the first players to come to mind was Sean Charles. (Might have squeezed him in on an extended bench.)

Davey Jakovich Pickett

Farmer Schwarz Lyon

Flower T Viney Tingay

B Lovett Neitz Lever

Wight May Whelan

Gawn Petracca Oliver

I: Stynes Jurrah Jetta Fritsch

E: Langdon Salem Charles Frawley Johnstone

That forward line would create havoc no? Whilst I'm not sure Jurrah earns his spot as he had his defiencies and didn't play for long his sheer X factor has him in my team.

Special mentions to some unheralded performers: Jamie Duursma, Paul Prymke, Ricky Jackson and Austin Wonamaerri.

Oooh, I feel like Werridee.

Here goes!

Jetta May Bowey

Lever Frawley Whelan

Langdon Oliver Yze

Lyon Schwarz Fritsch

Farmer Neitz K Pickett

Gawn Petracca J Viney

Stynes White Green Jones

Note, I was born in 1987, so don't remember Flower. Jackovich was great fun, but didn't play long enough. Loved T Viney's toughness, but like his son, his disposal was a killer. Bruce was a very dangerous player on his day. The Febeys and the McDonalds (Junior in particular) were good value, Tingay was solid, Jurrah was brilliant and Woey is unlucky not to make the list.

Lifetime goes back to the start of the 83' season I guess, but clear memory I'll go from the 92' season onwards.

I was in two minds about Ingerson, he was a great player. As I was doing my list I realised, that in my time, I have never seen a truly great CHB.

I always felt and even at the time that Ingerson was very underrated. Carey often got him, but he was no Robinson Caruso there. He always played really well on players like Lockett and Richardson.

Because there were so many stiff players to miss out, I've taken the liberty of naming a 2nd XXII to ease my conscience.

FB: Lever, Frawley, Jetta

HB: Hibberd, J. Rivers, Salem

C: Lovell, S. Woewodin, Johnstone

HF: Robertson, T. McDonald, Charles

FF: Jurrah, Bennett, Davey

FOLL: White, J. Viney, T. Viney

INT: Brayshaw, N. Brown, Jamar, Leoncelli

Some others to still apologise to. Kozzie Pickett, S. Smith, Shanahan, Grinter, M. Febey, G. Lovett,  Bizzle. But not enough to warrant doing a 3rd XXII.

Top team there Franky, but I'm surprised that you have included Phil Carman.

He only played one season at Melbourne for eleven games and didn't exactly set the world on fire.

I think a bit of poetic licence is allowed.

Bizzell wasn't the best either but for a couple of seasons he was brilliant.

Ditto Ray Biffin & if we'd had Biffin, Ditterich & Carman in the 2000 GF side Dean Wallis wouldn't have lasted 5 minutes.

LEADERS OF THE PACK by The Oracle

I was asked to write a preview of this week’s Round 8 match between Melbourne and Geelong. The two clubs have a history that goes right back to the time when the game was starting to become an organised sport but it’s the present that makes the task of previewing this contest so interesting. Both clubs recently reached the pinnacle of the competition winning premiership flags in 2021 and 2022 respectively, but before the start of this season, many good judges felt their time had passed - n

    TRAINING: Monday 29th April 2024

Demonland Trackwatcher Kev Martin was on hand at Gosch's Paddock for Monday's training session and made the following observations. About 38 to 40  players down at training.  BBB walking laps.  Charlie Spargo still in rehab, doing short run throughs.  Christian Salem has full kit on and doing individual work with a trainer. He is is starting to get into some sprints. I cannot see Andy Moniz-Wakefield out there. Jack Viney and Kade Chandler have broken away from the

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f
