SEN: Dees the Best Side on Paper

Half back Brayshaw makes me feel a little bit ill.

Get Bowey and Rivers in. We need speed and flair from half back.

Harmes, Sparrow, ANB, Spargo and even Gus and Hunter competing for one less spot in the 22. Left over is the sub.

Similarly it’s too tall and JVR, Brown, T Mc and even Grundy are competing for 3 spots. JVR had a great start to summer. Tommy moving well. BBB apparently very up and about in the recent match sim. Grundy settling in. It will be a good battle for spots.

It's a pretty good side.

Agree only two of McDonald, Brown and van Rooyen will play. Chandler, Jordon, Bowey and Howes will be in the mix. I don't think Hibberd, Harmes or Neal-Bullen are sure things after average seasons last year.

No Bowey Melksham or Tomlinson on the bench.Thats a very strong side.

ANB Spargo and Sparrow better pull their socks up and kick some goals consistently otherwise omitted.

How SEN could embarass themselves claiming Carlton has the best AFL first 18 is hilarious.

Cant even make the 8.

They may not even make it in 2023 with their poor training program. Same as us in 2019. Carlton is running out of time.

Last year Goody was obsessed with players eventually getting better whilst playing in the best 22 when there was players worthy of coming in and having a crack in the same position. Grundy/Gawn, Tmac, Brown and Rooey is too tall yes but I hope if one or two are left out of the best 22 we can learn to bring in one of them if they’re playing well in the 2nds and someone in the 1s isn’t. It was driving me nuts last year! He was obsessed with keeping the same team every week which I get a tiny bit but if someone is now in their third/fourth week and they’re playing average well they need to learn it’s not acceptable and you will be replaced

With Fritta as the third tall, and with both Gawn/Grundy on the field, IMHO we can only have one of BBB and TMac as the No 1 forward target. Both have the turning circle of the titanic and apply little forward pressure when the ball hits the deck. JVR for me is the second tall given his followup work at ground level. I'd give the extra spot to Chandler or Milkshake.

I’m inclined to agree, but Tommy at his best is so important to our ball movement as a link man, and BBB is a proven goal kicker.

JVR in theory cover both roles and give more defensively but if he isn’t nearly as effective in attack that won’t really matter.

I’d like to know how we think we can get more out of Grundy and Fritsch if we go with the older less mobile talls. Can Grundy  truly swap on ball as a big mid allowing both rucks to play midfield as the same time? Can Fritter play high half forward and defend to a reasonable level. One or both of those things would make it far easier for the big talls to do their thing without being exposed defensively.

I like the SEN side Michael Hibberd if 100% possibly pushed JJ out of the side, Sparrow is an automatic for me and we have another six in the wings ready to go.!!!

I want as many players as possible to revolve through that side, with two simple provisions. We are winning. We are covering like for like, with minimum injuries and the right folk, notwithstanding everyone getting a shot, at the end of year on the park.

Big ask, I know..

Where would you have Brayshaw then? I certainly preferred him in that defensive wing position from 2021. He was put there to plug a weakness and did a great job. I'm not sure if we need him there anymore.

I would probably have him as first rotation off the bench to fill that role and plug gaps. It would potentially move Harmes out of my best 23 which might be a reality by the end of the season.

Looks great in terms of depth, looks a nightmare at the Selection Table.

Salem won't be playing for a while so forget about him.

Brayshaw should be half back played his best football there.

B: Lever, May, Hibberd

HB: Brayshaw, Petty, Bowey

C: Langdon, Petracca, Hunter

HF: Pickett, van Rooyen, Neal-Bullen

F: Fritsch, McDonald, Gawn

FOLL: Grundy, Oliver, Viney

IC: Rivers, Sparrow, Harmes, Melksham

SUB: Chandler

Comes in to consideration down back a bit more if Salem is out, but I only really want him down back if Lever is out. Intercepting is what he does well down back, manning a zippy half forward opponent or fast ball use are certainly not strengths.

In general I’d have Gus as the 3rd winger and 4th or 5th on baller. He’ll be needed as a tall winger or tagger at times.

Won't Brayshaw remain as an inside midfielder as stipulated in his contract?

That wasn't a real thing.

Pretty sure Brayshaw even said this himself on an episode of Gus and Gawny after he had signed

Yeah I'm not convinced because he played on the wing in 2021 and then was playing in defence last year until late July and during contract negotiations he said he wanted to play inside mid.  He signed the contract and all of a sudden he played inside mid the very next game and stayed there for the rest of the year.

Aren’t your bottom six needed to win the flag?

Four Premiership players on the bench and a top 10 draftee.

Melksham and Tomlinson not in.
Nor Bowey and Jordan. Guess Bowey for Salem.
Handy bottom nine.

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k

OVER YET? by KC from Casey

The Friday evening rush hour clash of two of the VFL’s 2024 minnows, Carlton and the Casey Demons was excruciatingly painful to watch, even if it was for the most part a close encounter. I suppose that since the game had to produce a result (a tie would have done the game some justice), the four points that went to Casey with the win, were fully justified because they went to the best team. In that respect, my opinion is based on the fact that the Blues were a lopsided combination that had

    CENTIMETRES by Whispering Jack

Our game is one where the result is often decided by centimetres; the touch of a fingernail, a split-second decision made by a player or official, the angle of vision or the random movement of an oblong ball in flight or in its bounce and trajectory. There is one habit that Melbourne seems to have developed of late in its games against Carlton which is that the Demons keep finding themselves on the wrong end of the stick in terms of the fine line in close games at times when centimetres mak
