Discussion on recent allegations about the use of illicit drugs in football is forbidden
  • IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING

Posting unsubstantiated rumours on this website is strictly forbidden.

Demonland has made the difficult decision to not permit this platform to be used to discuss & debate the off-field issues relating to the Melbourne Football Club including matters currently being litigated between the Club & former Board members, board elections, the issue of illicit drugs in footy, the culture at the club & the personal issues & allegations against some of our players & officials ...

We do not take these issues & this decision lightly & of course we believe that these serious matters affecting the club we love & are so passionate about are worthy of discussion & debate & I wish we could provide a place where these matters can be discussed in a civil & respectful manner.

However these discussions unfortunately invariably devolve into areas that may be defamatory, libelous, spread unsubstantiated rumours & can effect the mental health of those involved. Even discussion & debate of known facts or media reports can lead to finger pointing, blame & personal attacks.

The repercussion is that these discussions can open this website, it’s owners & it’s users to legal action & may result in this website being forced to shutdown.

Our moderating team are all volunteers & cannot moderate the forum 24/7 & as a consequence problematic content that contravenes our rules & standards may go unnoticed for some time before it can be removed.

We reserve the right to delete posts that offend against our above policy & indeed, to ban posters who are repeat offenders or who breach our code of conduct.

WE HAVE BUILT A FANTASTIC ONLINE COMMUNITY AT DEMONLAND OVER THE PAST 23 YEARS & WE WOULD LIKE TO CONTINUE TO BE ABLE TO DISCUSS THE CLUB WE LOVE & ARE SO PASSIONATE ABOUT.

Pre-season Intensity

I'm not sure I'm buying this revisionism. We came out and won the first 10 games in convincing fashion. I'ts not like we didn't hit the ground running. We were clearly the best side  in  the comp till the half way mark.

A more likely argument would be we went too hard early and were phyicially spent by the end of the year compared to other sides. and that might be just one factor.

It's worth considering. Teams that time their run just right to peak at finals, win finals. Is our training intensity now, or 'going too hard early' going to show at the back end of the season? Or is our intensity more of a mental hunger rather than physical?

I still reckon Tomlinson should get back on the wing - with his increased fitness (even greater running ability across a game), build and two seasons of decent backline skilling and nouse, and an increase in his professional footballing hunger, he - the space maker - is going to blossom as one of our greatest receivers and playmakers into the forward line. No kidding, I reckon he's got it and could very well bring it out this coming season.

Pray tell why would we recruit Hunter if Tommo was to go back to the wing? Where will Hunter  play ?

No I think Tommo will prove handy in the backline With much greater pace flexibility snd run as he is much fitter and lighter hollowing his ACL two years.

Well done Must look to book myself.
one of the best games will be the opening night vs Bulldogs who have more players like us to display. Will be a great match worthy of our 2021 clashes.

Reslly hope we get a big crowd to all the home blockbusters vs Dogs Swans Tigers Freo Pies  Blues Lions and away ones vs Tigers Dons Hawks Saints? And Blues and Swans.

Anyone that reckons Tommo can play fwd or wing, needs to re-watch the games when he played there.  He's been tried many times at Giants and with us.  He can only run in straight lines.  He is a decent/good backman and that's it imo

Agree DD but I feel he will be good this year after another season after ACL and more flexible and faster but still only suited to the backline, not the wing.

Just an opinion when prompted by an article to consider his footballing role. I do rate Hunter whilst at the same time consider him to be very suitable for HFwd Flanking and using his good kicking to score on occasion. That left me thinking about the other wing and the speculation that he could fill it; or, was there someone else who could do the same? Tomlinson once again came to mind, simple as that in the argy-bargy about who, what, where, when ('23 season), why ... etc.

I agree with this - if they are being asked to play the same role.

To be honest i thought it was worth trying Tomo in that role last season. Unfortunately Weed wasn't up to it and i would have considered giving tomo a crack at it, such is the structural importance for us of that role.

But as i said, Tomo is little undersized i think to be true KPF. Which is why i think a mobile forward role might be his best option. And to play that role he has to almost change body shape from previous years, become lighter and more like a 800 metre runner than a 100 metre sprinter (who are generally strong, power athletes). Or more like say Grundy than say hawkins - tall but lean.

And he definitely has to improve his lateral movement and agility, something he has, like most players (eg Lever) struggled with post ACL.

He doesn't look much different in this photo from training the other day, so perhaps I'm of the mark.

But I'd be interested in the views of regular track watchers whether he is more agile and moving better this preseason - and what role he has been playing in match sims and in drills.

Binman I would just say Weid, TMac and Tomo are all of similar height and weight so all are big enough to play CHF just that TMac has the best tools.

I'm not suggesting tomo plsy chf this year - quite the opposite.

I did say I thought he might have been worth trying in that spot to REPLACE tmac after his injury last season.

I'm suggesting I think his best option to get a regular seniors game is a high half forward role (and even then he'd be pushing it up hill to get a spot).

But would need to be more athletic than he has been over the journey.

By the by, on his size the MFC website has him one cm shorter than tmac, which ain't much.

But he is only 94 kg - 7kg less than tmac. That's quite some difference for a kpf.

He"s close to being big enough for chf, but as I noted I reckon he's a touch undersized for that role.

I agree Binman I guess that I am just lamenting the fact that when we were bereft of talls in the finals we refused to play Weid or Tomo to provide an option. So glad that Weid left and we have an injection of height into the team that we may use.

Tommo will go to the wing if Hunter was injured. However, Hunter is way ahead of Tommo.

Maybe Hunter can play half fwd?

Just because he has been a wingman doesn't mean he will stay one.

Please excuse my ignorance..  I know that there are 6 backs,  6 forwards and 2 wings.  That leaves a ruck, ruck rover, rover and centre  as well as the interchange players.

Excluding the ruck, I presume ‘mids’ is a collective for the other three mid fielders (ruck rover, rover and centre). I am guessing that one or even possibly two of the interchange players may also be classified as mids (player rotation).

My presumption being that the team sheet titles (ruck rover, rover and centre) are in a sense are now outdated.

Happy to be corrected/ educated or even ridiculed because of my ignorance!

I don't think Tommo will ever go to the wing. Howes, Jordon and Woewodin would be given shots on the wing before him.

I'd say the club are now just waiting out until Tomlinson's contract finishes, while also having a pretty solid depth option at full back if required.

I still can't believe his contract doesn't finish until 2024.... that is probably the worst long-term contract we've done out of the current crop.

I wonder if things got tight, can we pay him out the final year to get it off our books? Or would it still come under the salary cap?

Yes, the titles have changed a lot over the years.

When I was a kid growing up in the 60s, these were the positions on the field:

B:        Former rover who has lost a yard          Loneliest man in the world        Rock of Gibraltar

H/B:    Enforcer        Key Defender       Jack-of-all-trades

C:        Real goer       Pivot        Racehorse

H/F:    Avenue to goal      The hardest position       Will-o'-the-wisp

F:        Resting ruckman       Spearhead       Goalsneak

R:        One kick behind the play       Prime mover      Borer into the bottom of packs.

19th:    Utility      20th:  Big-hearted trier.

A host of exciting young prospects, natural left-footers, honest battlers, bean-poles, big occasion players, nippy small men and club stalwarts who have all been knocking on the door have just missed selection and will be running around in the early game.

============================================================================

Things started to change back in the 1980s and a new terminology came into being.  Teams now looked like this:

B:       Tagger       Stopper       Sweeper

H/B:   Rebounder     Negator     Springboard

C:        Breakaway     Instigator     Linkman

H/F:    Runner      Tall option     Receiver

F:        Crumber     Converter     Finisher

R:        Tall     On-baller     Small

I/C:      Overlapper     Tag breaker

===========================================================================

As of 2023, we now have three backs, three forwards, twelve rotating mids and five on the bench.

Yeah definitely not cool.

Yeah I thought it was 4 as well, but then last year I recall someone on DLand mentioning it was 5!!

If so, that is a terrible bit of list management and hopefully doesn't stop us from re-signing Kozzy!

Hence why I was saying if it came down to it could we take a small financial hit to get the contracts off the books?

Edit: I will say Tim Lamb has been pretty good in the list management role to date, but this is probably his worst effort.

Yeah definitely 5 years, far from the best list management move we've made even if he has played some good footy.

Btw really glad you've kept your name!

To be fair, his knee injury threw a spanner in the works. Wiped out his 2021 season (when he was in the starting 22).

And he never seemed to regain his mobility and lateral movement (which was not great even pre injury) in 2022. That's pretty common though.

Hopefully he is back to his optimal physical shape this season.

Though even if he does I think it is unlikely he'll make the ones

    DISCO INFERNO by Whispering Jack

Two weeks ago, when the curtain came down on Melbourne’s game against the Brisbane Lions, the team trudged off the MCG looking tired and despondent at the end of a tough run of games played in quick succession. In the days that followed, the fans wanted answers about their team’s lamentable performance that night and foremost among their concerns was whether the loss was a one off result of fatigue or was it due to other factor(s) of far greater consequence.  As it turns out, the answer to

TIGERS PUNT CASEY by KC from Casey

The afternoon atmosphere at the Swinburne Centre was somewhat surreal as the game between Richmond VFL and the Casey Demons unfolded on what was really a normal work day for most Melburnians. The Yarra Park precinct marched to the rhythm of city life, the trains rolled by, pedestrians walked by with their dogs and the traffic on Punt Road and Brunton Avenue swirled past while inside the arena, a football battle ensued. And what a battle it was? The Tigers came in with a record of two wins f

It's Game Day and the Demons once again open the round of football with their annual clash against Richmond on ANZAC Eve. The Tigers, coached by former Dees champion and Premiership assistant coach Adem Yze have a plethora of stars missing due to injury but beware the wounded Tiger. The Dees will have to be switched on tonight. A win will keep them in the hunt for the Top 4 whilst a loss could see them fall out of the 8 for the first time since 2020.

There’s a touch of irony in the fact that Adem Yze played his first game for Melbourne in Round 13, 1995 against the club he now coaches. For that game, he wore the number 44 guernsey and got six touches in a game the team won by 11 points.  The man whose first name was often misspelled, soon changed to the number 13 and it turned out lucky for him. He became a highly revered Demon with a record of 271 games during which his presence was acknowledged by the fans with the chant of “Oozee” wh
