Spargo on the wing was ineffective. I said he was a tad slow and a bit short and, I believe, he was shown up in both those ways. If Salem is fit to go I would bring him in for Spargo. A bit tough for him having been played in an unfamiliar position but the other players stood up well.

Salem to play his usual position and a number of players to rotate through the ‘defensive ’ wing. Hunt, Rivers and even Hibberd and Bowey might get a run through there depending on defensive matchups. Jordon as medi sub again?

I agree, stats are over-rated in football, you can have 40 possessions and waste half of them, it's what you do with them that counts, same as inside 50's.

Stats show that Carlton had six scoring shots in the last quarter - didn't do much for them, did they?

Spargo is not a wingman and is being played out of position.  Like Frittata in the 2018 Prelim - and he got bagged for his lack of input. He would be very stiff to be dropped .

I still have doubts over Jayden Hunt's disposal at times.

But at the moment he deserves to keep his spot.

Christian Salem back in to replace Jake Bowey when he has recovered from being sore.

Salem must come in, Melksham will be the unlucky one.

No way Melksham goes out.

Melksham is the General, no way he will be out of the side. I reckon his role has been pivotal to our forward line structure and the way he's playing I don't even think T-Rex gets a look in.

Does Sparrow make way for Salem, e.g. with Harmes back in last week and Brayshaw playing midfield the past few weeks we have plenty of grunt.

Melksham isn’t going anywhere. Without him we would be preparing for an elimination final (match winner against Blues)

Any evidence that Spargo played more than about 5 minutes on the wing?

Langdon played 100%. Harmes 79%. At most Spargo played 21% but I’m pretty sure Nibbler had a little go there and generally Brayshaw would cover that time.

Spargo having one stint on the wing is not reason enough to turn a backman (Hunt, Salem or Bowey) in to a wing or a forward. That would be a huge gamble.

Spargo clearly started on the wing, but it's hard to gauge what percentage of time he spent there because he was largely unsighted after the 1st qtr.

And we have a ready made wingman in Jordon, so we don't have to turn a backman into a wingman.

Stop making excuses for Spargo's lack of output.

By started do you mean at the first bounce below? Zach Bailey was tagged by Harmes and spent most of the night on the wing.

I was trying to work out on whom and where Harmes was playing

ANB wasn't getting caught last year, or even the first half of this year. He's out of form, pure and simple. He works hard, but should be playing better.

To all Demonland “devotees” of

NEAL-BULLEN, could you please advise the following,

- Rate, out of 10, his Offensive output, ie disposals, goals, assists.

- Rate where he would sit ( 1-22)  on form , in the 22 for this season.

- In nearly 150 games, how many times would he have been in the best 11/ best 50%.

- Other than “trying hard”, ( something every player should be doing, and more) what is his real worth to the team ?

Spargo started on the bench. After Brisbane scored their 1st goal, Spargo was on the wing and marked Gawn's errant kick from the centre bounce. He may have been one of many who rotated through there. But he definitely wasn't playing as a small forward, as he was rarely seen inside 50.

We are pretty much unbeatable when our forward and midfield pressure is elite, and that’s mainly down to Viney and our role players.  In 150 games, ANB has probably been top 4 or 5 for pressure and defensive acts in 90% of his games.  Friday was no exception.

Harmes did a really good and underrated job. Bailey is probably their most dangerous mid and he kicked 0.0 and only had 2 score involvements.

Unless we have some unforeseen injury or Covid issue, I’m almost certain it’s going to be:

Out: Bowey

In: Salem

Sub: JJ

Key matchups:

Buddy vs May

Mcdonald/Reid vs Petty

Hayward vs Lever

Papley vs Hunt

Heeney vs Hibberd.

Sydney have won 7 in a row and I reckon we’ve got them at the perfect time. They’ve had some really soft kills lately and their last game at the G was against Essendon which they lost.

I’m not giving any weight to the round 12 game. We didn’t have May, Petty got injured half way through, Sam Reid played the game of his life and we got killed by the umps.

There’s no way that happens again.

No change (from original posted teams)

Bowey and JJ stiff

less changes the better

I can see you have made up your mind by the stilted rhetoric of your post.

ANB does defensive work up and down the ground that are the reason we are so good. He also works hard to create space for Petracca in the forward half so that CP5 can get free. I’m sure that next year they will get Bedford or someone to also do these selfless things but right now he is a very important cog to your team and you might want to have a look and see a bit more than stats.

Yeah, he can lift, he can hit targets and finish off our good work.

But that doesn’t diminish his role and how much he works to play that role as well as he does.

Salem in,  crazy talk about him not being B22.

Bowie is unlucky but i think it is him that goes out.

Think that's the only change, i still worry about Melksham as our second tall, but can't drop him ATM

Could Bowser play Spargo's role??

If we are not set-up at the scene of ANB's ball possession or his intended points of disposal, he keeps possession and allows himself to be tackled, usually falling artfully with the ball and not getting a 'holding/incorrect disposal' decision against him, such is his mastery. In those few crucial seconds, the rest of the Dees are setting up or have already set up for the next play. This is a main value of the gut-runner, graduated and empowering team sacrifices. Just watch him, and when he does it. He occupies those seconds with a touch of class at all risks to his own well-being.

My son and I have dubbed ANB "The Tackling Dummy" for just this.

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
