first world problems

Harmes for Sparrow. Makes sense to me. Harmes kicks more goals, plays better in the midfield and can tag.

Getting TMac fit and ready is mostly to have a cover for injury, IMV. Would have to be flying on the track to dislodge someone but might be a handy in should we get a couple of injuries to talls (forward and/or back)

He’d be close to ready by the GF I reckon. I wouldn’t normally question his fitness, given he is always  in the top couple , but with the finals intensity not sure he’d last 4 quarters.

27oC and Sunny on friday

Far out I could use some of that!

Adds to the case against Harmes with the short break and tough slog.

I'd like to see more run from half back and the nearside (non-Langdon) wing so I'd be interested in seeing:

Bowey into the back line. Hunt to the wing. Jordon to the mid-field (can he tag?). Sparrow out.

Main concern with the above is what to do about tagging Neale.

I’m increasingly convinced that TMac will come back into the team in W1 of the finals unless he has a serious setback.

I seem to remember that he purposively opted for a surgery option with a shorter recovery time (plate over weak joint, or something like that) because of the chance he could return to play finals.  The last few injury reports suggest he’s tracking well, integrating into team training, and even travelling with the team to Brisbane this week.

That doesn’t sound like management of a player that is out for the season.

IN:  J. Smith, J. Harmes

Out: ANB, T. Sparrow

Can't see goody doing it, but i think we need another tall up fwd.

Harmes will come in to play on Neale i think

Agree you dont want Hunt to close to goal and defending one on one, but that all depends if we let their ball movement happen that way, We were pretty awful v Sydney, didnt have May there either that night, Tomlinson got destroyed and they exploited us down back. Reckon it will be different this time.

They can't play 3 talls and have Cameron go out of the square, the will but 1 maybe 2 of the tall on the bench and if that is the case don't be surprised if May plays on Cameron and lever looks to drop off in front.  May has done this many a time, and it means if the ball into Cameron isn't perfect he will mop up.

Cameron out of the goal square is a nightmare match up one on one, but if Bris set up that way the Dees wont let him have the leading lanes, and then Hipwood, McStay and Daniher have to become crummers

Harmes in for Sparrow or Rivers (both stiff!)

Laurie to debut for Spargo

Laurie with 6 tackles, a goal and 19 touches in a tight game last week. I reckon an injection of youth and excitement will help us. Hard to see us bringing JVR with Milkshake playing so well

I know Spargo brings pressure but he has to contribute with a decent number of touches and hit the scoreboard too. 4 touches in a huge game is not enough when combined with his average form

Harmes tagged Neale out of the game R15 and in the QF last year. This was instrumental for our midfield dominance in both games.  Surely Harmes must come in to do this job again.

I agree but coming off a 5 day break after playing in wet conditions at Casey? Seems a very tough ask.

I thought they might pull Harmes off after half time.

Agree I watched the Casey game and he copped a lot of physical pressure and it was a complete slog

Dont be beaten by what you know. Harmes has done well on Neale, of course he should play,  possibly Sparrow to Sub. But that will be the only change i reckon.

I can’t come to grips with Harmes playing the whole game last Sunday and then being called up for Friday.

I wonder if Goody has someone else in mind to tag Neale and then brings in the fresh Bedford, or Chandler, who didn’t play last weekend.

Didn’t Chandler and Bedford have Covid though?

I keep reading that the VFL standard is so much below AFL level that it's hard to evaluate form. If the standard is that much lower, does that also mean playing a full game does not require the same level of exertion? In other words, would a five day break be sufficient for Harmes given the lower level of intensity at VFL level?

I'll say it again.

How do people think Harmes will go off a 5 day break playing a full game in heavy heavy conditions?

I think it would be a coaching blunder to select him unless we had an injury.

Didn't someone post previously that he was aiming for Casey on the bye week

Don't reckon he'll be in much different condition to the AFL players who played a finals like game that finished 13 hours earlier tbh.

I missed that, but that is good news and aligns with a return to the seniors in week 1 👍

It seems like there are far fewer whispers about selection this season.

This is completely made up, so please ignore.

I have heard Weed is chance of being selected this week.

  • PREVIEW: North Melbourne

Can you believe it? After a long period of years over which Melbourne has dominated in matches against North Melbourne, the Demons are looking down the barrel at two defeats at the hands of the Kangaroos in the same season. And if that eventuates, it will come hot on the heels of an identical result against the Gold Coast Suns. How have the might fallen? There is a slight difference in that North Melbourne are not yet in the same place as Gold Coast. Like Melbourne, they are currently situated in the lower half of the ladder and though they did achieve a significant upset when the teams met earlier in the season, their subsequent form has been equally unimpressive and inconsistent.

  • REPORT: Adelaide

The atmosphere at the Melbourne Football Club at the beginning of the season was aspirational following an injury-plagued year in 2024. Coach Simon Goodwin had lofty expectations with the return of key players, the anticipated improvement from a maturing group with a few years of experience under their belts, and some exceptional young talent also joining the ranks. All of that went by the wayside as the team failed to click into action early on. It rallied briefly with a new strategy but has fallen again with five more  consecutive defeats.

  • CASEY: Coburg

The Casey Demons returned to their home ground which was once a graveyard for opposing teams but they managed to gift the four points on offer to Coburg with yet another of their trademark displays of inaccuracy in front of goals and some undisciplined football that earned the displeasure of the umpires late in the game. The home team was welcomed by a small crowd at Casey Fields and looked right at home as it dominated the first three quarters and led for all bar the last five minutes of the game. In the end, they came away with nothing, despite winning everywhere but on the scoreboard and the free kick count.

After four weeks on the road the Demons make their long awaited return to the MCG next Sunday to play in a classic late season dead rubber against the North Melbourne Kangaroos. Who comes in and who comes out?

  • POSTGAME: Rd 17 vs Adelaide

The Demons were wasteful early before putting the foot down early in the 2nd quarter but they chased tail for the remainder of the match. They could not get their first use of the footy after half time and when they did poor skills, execution and decision making let them down.
