HEY! Why am I your instant go-to when somebody mentions โ€˜derangedโ€™ supporter???

ย

Very harsh to be having a pop at the strength and conditioning team because the team looks sore this year. Didnโ€™t hear too many complaints during finals last year ย when the team dominated and swatted every opponent.ย

Who are you saying said that then? I will assume you're referencing @rpfc's "reckless" comment, but that comment didn't necessarily mean it was in the context of player welfare, you're assuming that. It could have meant in terms of the impact on our performance and results, it could have meant in terms of it impacting the ability to get back to 100%, it could have even been in relation to how it impacts the ability to keep our depth players when sore/injured players are consistently picked ahead of them.

Players getting back to 100%? Are you crazy? Even the fit players are only at 75% optimal levels now. Haven't you been reading the loading thread?

My apologies, I forgot that we do an epic preseason over the next 7 weeks to get three quarters of our fitness!

No chook, disagree with you on this - deranged is just fine! ( I'd also accept maniacal)ย

So please clarify, is this captainโ€™s run only for the 26 named? ย For example no mention of Joel Smith.

Sounds to me like Gawny's got a dose of the trots.ย

We also have a whopping 3 players on our injury listย

One of which is expected to make a quick return from a very bad injuryย

Yep fair enough.

I suspect once the season is done we will hear that quite few plyer have been carrying things this year.

Maxy has never looked right all season to my eye, nor May since his out with concussion.

You can add Salo, Rivers, Jordon and Lever as well i reckon.ย ย

I would suggest our inside 50 conversion and goal kicking accuracy is more injured than the players

At the start of the session the players gathered in a circle in the centre , and clapped and cheered someone. They often do this when a debut is announced.

Perhaps it was Laurie. It wasn't Van R.

If thatโ€™s what it was it was very tame.ย

whenever you see one of those selection announcement videos from Training on social media all the players are jumping on top of the player, ruffling his hair and whooping it up. That did not appear to happen here so I doubt that anyone is debuting.ย

I could of course be wrong.ย

More likely someone in the team has some news from their personal life like and engagement, baby news or similar

@binman; Salem kicked the ball 35m in the 2nd minute of round one with a strapped knee and was out of the game for 15 minutes, then put back on, then subbed out for 11 games.

I am not worried about his โ€˜welfare,โ€™ I am worried about my welfare!

You donโ€™t eff around with your star players and I felt that that decision to play a clearly hampered player went over the line from resilience to โ€˜whatever-word-defines-a-star-being-out-for-three-months.โ€™

Thatโ€™s the wager they are making with this โ€˜resilience training/playingโ€™ and I think it is fine with bodies that are fresher than we were after a long season playing a strenuous and demanding style.

Just seen a number of our better players playing clearly hampered this yearโ€ฆ

ย

Your โ€˜recklessโ€™ argument in this thread is constructed on assumptions and hindsight. Injury management is galaxies from being an exact science. It may have been perfectly sensible for them to put Salem back on, if they were thinking heโ€™d just jarred the knee, and could run it off in game time. In this way, itโ€™s a form of injury assessment. This happens. All players carry niggles throughout the season. If I had $5 for every time Iโ€™ve advised a sportsperson - โ€œnow letโ€™s just suck it and seeโ€ - you know the story. Rarely are players niggle free, particularly as the season runs on. Ergo, the decision to rest-play is a risk-reward scenario. You seem to be suggesting they should always honour the risk. Thatโ€™s never going to happen. There are obvious advantages to the team and player to playing through imperfection. Also, you (and others) seem very confident in assessing who is injured, and itโ€™s so often just based on form - Maxy, Salem, Jordon, it goes on. The number of times I read โ€˜heโ€™s obviously carrying something, they shouldnโ€™t have played himโ€™ is immeasurable, and mostly a rationalisation to explain a variety of factors influencing form. This belief that the MFC are somehow defying convention by having players play through soreness and mild injury is also nonsense. All clubs do it. There wouldnโ€™t be many players running around if they didnโ€™t. Itโ€™s just a risk-reward policy exercised over a very imperfect, multi-factorial game and season.ย

I think the more likely explanation is a player telling a jokeย  or something like that to kick off the session. I know that Richmond do, or used to, do this before a game as a tension reliever.

You should have, he would have been on Punt Road before he kicked.

Webber, we appreciate your input as a medico. But I think the point that rpfc is making is that surely you would be more cautious going into round 1 with a player carrying an injury? You've had weeks to assess the injury, compared with maybe a few days once the season has commenced. The injury was a chipped cartilage. Does that type of injury heal withย rest, or is surgery the only solution?

Oh, I donโ€™t deny that. My rap sheetโ€™s a mile long. But surely Iโ€™m not the only deranged supporter. Thereโ€™s probs heaps on here just as deranged. Right? Somebody? ANYBODY???

Deranged is not a word Iโ€™d use for you WCW.ย
I think โ€œspecialโ€ is way more appropriate.

โ€œSpecialโ€ can mean many things. Iโ€™m gonna assume in this instance itโ€™s a good kind of special. ๐Ÿ’•

  • AFLW REPORT: Gold Coast

The forecast said wind. The ladder said mismatch. The scoreboard said obliteration. Melbourne didnโ€™t just beat Gold Coast โ€” they dismantled them: 13.15 (93) to 0.6 (6). An 87-point obliteration, the Suns held goalless, and the Demons delivering their second-highest winning margin and third-highest score in AFLW history.

It was a tough ask for him to break through as a 199cm ruckman in the shadow of an all-time great in that position who is also the club captain. He had some good days at Casey but was unable to progress and was delisted at the end of the season.

The 33-year-old Campbell has yet to play AFL football for Melbourne, but his Casey form has been strong and he has been retained as a ready-made ruck depth option who is widely regarded as someone who is excellent for the culture of the club.

The Demons acquired an interesting player in Sharp, who narrowly missed securing a spot in the Lionsโ€™ premiership team last year. The 22-year-old medium forward played in the opening round this season and ended up with 18 senior games, although he was substituted in or out in for ten of those matches. He demonstrated glimpses of form, but ultimately ended the year on the margins of the team.

  • AFLW PREVIEW: Gold Coast

On Friday, the Demons return to our Casey Fields fortress where they have a 77% win rate. The scent of September is in the air and the struggling Suns are on the horizon. The Cranbourne weather forecast? Ominous, like the match itself: a strong chance of carnage. Letโ€™s be honest, last weekโ€™s first half against the West Coast was a training drill but we dropped our guard in the final quarter. While this match is a mismatch on paper โ€” second versus seventeenth โ€” football is won in the wind, the contests, and the moments.
