Everyone make mistakes at work so how can we expect the umpires to be any different? They make mistakes and will continue to do so in the future just like everyone else. Why can't people just accept it and move on? But these aren't mistakes. This is blatantly being scared to award the opposition there correct free kicks for fear of crowd reaction, pure and simple. Are you saying it was just mistakes that saw us get 3 free kicks in 3/4, when we are up on possessions and ultimately win the contest? These were two very inexperienced umpires, one a local, who were obviously not wanting to upset a feral crowd. It's not good enough in professional sport. These umpires have to be spoken to and told, " pay what you see or that's it." 8 1 Quote

DeeSpencer 26,667 Posted July 3, 2022 Posted July 3, 2022 They put the good umps on for big games so it’s hardly a surprise they snuck a couple of local guys in for 1 v 13 in a twilight fixture. But the Brown ruck free kick, the Oliver coat hanger, the Langdon hold as he was set to receive a handball and the complete lack of free kicks was as bad as I’ve seen. I’d have been apoplectic if we lost 3 Quote

It was 23-9 but also so many missed free kicks for us. We have highlighted the Walker free … it was unbelievable. I think they called play on then the free kick. Oliver was hammered and two umps missed it … somehow. Oliver was scrapped by Berry all night and got nothing. He was held without the footy and not given one free. Keays free in the last (and goal) was another. They didn’t pay holding the ball for most of the night. It was a dog fight. Then 15 metrs out from Crows goal , Brayshaw gets pinged. I almost smashed the Tv. And frees to Doedee and O’Brien were actually met with surprise by them. Maybe chopping arms but that happened over and over again. BBB was smashed in the arms at every contest. Fritsch was held by one arm by Butts and didn’t receive one free kick. I agree the commentary is rubbish. Hudson and Dunstall and Ruccuito were clearly barracking for the Crows. They seemingly never questioned a decision (just thd Oliver one). Then they gave us plaudits once MFC had the game won. Clearly the home town crowd noise had an influence. We had to beat the Crows and the umps !! And we did … Go Dees Yeah that Brayshaw free for dragging it in was crap and right in front of goal. Replay showed an Adelaide player toeing the ball back in under Brayshaw as he was jumped on by other Crows. They showed the replay and I think it was Dunstall who paid a compliment to one of the Crows tacklers for his "skillful appeal to win a free in front of goals" wtf I'm all for putting the whistle away but then you get stupid 50 / 50 frees paid directly in front. The whole night consisted of Crows players getting tackled when they clearly had time to dispose of the ball and decided to go to ground or just drop it. Our typical pressure game was not rewarded. For those who say, just accept it, we won anyway. We shouldn't have to. This amateur standard in a professional game has already cost us a game at Adelaide oval and just wait for next week when the opposition is more competitive at another hostile ground. 5 1 Quote

Well if you want to put it like that, we should close down DL and all social forums and only deal/discuss the serious world issues. Probably a good idea to cancel all sport and leisure activities while we are at it. Blistering was making a joke, you do realize that don't you? Think you went a bit over the top don't you think? Webber 10,650 Posted July 3, 2022 Posted July 3, 2022 (edited) Just watched the replay (1st time), and was expecting the umpiring to be horrendous based on this thread. It wasn’t. Yes, several clangers, and as happens in ‘crowd’ influence games, the umps aren’t keyed into looking for Dees frees as much as for the ‘crowd’ team, so only award them if they’re unignorable and egregious. Experience and conscious awareness of this by umpires goes a long way, but the AFL won’t admit the problem, so won’t properly look to solve it. The best umpires don’t succumb to crowd influence, so we need better umpires. Over to you AFL. As to the commentary, it was a typical low grade ‘underdog’ barracking effort, except for Jason Dunstall, who loves the Dees, and is one of Clarrie’s champions particularly, for reasons that he articulates very well, and often! When the umpiring is egregious, it is likely to figure prominently in people's comments on the game. Why not? We don't have to prove how morally superior we are by chosing to overlook it. Furthermore when you can only see a match on TV, there is a lot you cannot see and therefore can't reasonably discuss, but the umpiring usuallly stands out. It has been pretty bad so far this weekend. So it will be commented on. To quote those who say "get over it", I say, get over people commenting on it. Quite frankly, a Royal Commission does not nearly go far enough. I would have thought a fully parliamentary inquiry with very broad terms of reference is required. Stan from Stradbroke Island should chair, as he has all the relevant statistics at hand. At the completion of the said inquiry, a Truth and Reconciliation Commission should be established, where former and current Demons are given the opportunity to tell their story. First called to the stand should be Roger Ellingworth, Peter Giles, Stephen Smith, Max Gawn and a representative of the Flower family. In witness protection should be Leigh Matthews and Razor Ray. Jamie Broadbent. Umpire 31 Paul Rebeschini had 8 AFL games before this year. Both would have been affected by crowd. Well I think that explains it a bit. Lack of experience- hopefully it gets reviewed and they get feedback and learn from it. it was a disappointing performance but I don’t but into the trying to get Adelaide to win narrative. They are human, they were overcome by the crowd. Maybe get them in Melbourne for their first 20-30 games before umpiring in their home state. Quote

Clarry was a shocker, Brown mark, Fogs? spectacular non attempt at a mark, Brayshaw didnt drag it in.... but the obvious reason for the discrepancy was that we had the ball. Quote

Straight Sets Simon 23,113 Posted July 3, 2022 Posted July 3, 2022 It will be just as bad in Geelong on Thursday. I hope our coaches are working with the players to cut out the silly free kicks that the umpires will be hot on. Quote
joeboy 3,186 Posted July 3, 2022 Posted July 3, 2022 Whilst there’s NO doubt the umpiring was rigged, Lever was given a lifeline when not penalized for fumbling ( deliberately) the ball over the goal line when under absolutely no pressure. 3 2 1 Quote

I don’t usually complain about the umpires and I’m fully aware that it’s a hard task recruiting umpires but fair go. There has to be a royal commission into what took place at Adelaide Oval today. Here’s an example of what I’m talking about. What in blazes is this all about? I thought this was a free to Tex. Mitch Brown looked at Tex and side stepped into his path (blocked Tex's run at the ball) which Rex exaggerated by jumping over Brown. My only criticism would be where our players were tackled without the ball probably 3 times, taking them out of play while we got pinged when we did the same in the 4th quarter. There was also the forearm that Clarry copped, but I was super impressed that he didn't complain and just went about his business. This said, I thought the umpiring was of an acceptable standard didn't have any really bearing on the result. The week before v Brisbane I thought the umpiring was superb, the umpires got the balance right in letting the play continue and not over officiating particularly where a player ducked their head to draw high contact. 1 Quote
