I think J Smith comes in and will take one of Riewoldt or Lynch which will free up Petty to take on Levers role. He is just ahead of Tommo based on athleticism but Tommo is definitely an alternative option.

TMac could move into the wing which will allow JJ to rotate through the middle and cover Viney leaving Weid and BBB in the forward line.

But I think the more likely scenario is Dunstan in for Viney as a straight swap and TMac/Weid for BBB.

Move on from 2018 please

Tmac has played about 5/10 mins in about 10 games in 2018 on the wing as warm up only, before he went firward.

When since then had he played on the wing? And is he as agile now as then.?

He Probably will go down back for the tall timber or play loose like Lever. Smith might even play intercept.

JJ or Angus and/or Dunstan can go into the midfield.

We have options no doubt and great flexibility.

This is the perfect occasion for Dunstan to show us what he can do. We need to know early in the season whether he is capable of filling a gap. Let’s not wait until a finals emergency to find out.

Surely Viney would be the first player in the league to be sidelined twice by the heath and safety protocols. (First one was the practice match V North)

Agree, would be like the Titanic turning in a bathtub!

Beware if it is an ice bath though.

Although named in the 18 together, i can't see TMac, BB and the Weid all playing. They've played together once, against Carlton last year i think it was. It was not considered a success by the brains trust and was not tried again

My guess is:

BB for TMac (50/50 call. could well be the Weid)

Dunstan for Viney. I though it was for this exact scenario that Dunstan was brought in. Like for like replacement

Smith for Lever

Once they're named in the starting 18 the only changrs that are required are from the extended bench.

This is why I'm just as confused why all of a sudden all three of McDonald, Brown and Weideman are named to play when Goody specifically said they wouldn't have them all in the one team.

Looks like we’ve decided that the rest of the competition doesn’t measure up so we might as well experiment: in one of the biggest games of the year

Indeed - even in yesterday’s presser, when specifically asked the question whether all three could play in the same forward line, he said “the short answer is we won’t”. There’s no room for TMac back with Smith in, they won’t play him on the wing, but all three are named on the field.

Goody is playing funny buggers. One of the three is injured or otherwise unavailable which won’t be revealed until the final teams are out. It’s the only way I can make sense of the selections as they are.

We should know more by late this afternoon when final teams for Sunday are announced.

Yes, let’s wait until then for well thought opinion and also on whether Demonland takes @WERRIDEE’s house as agreed earlier in the week if Brown is playing.

But my bet is Andy needs to go and organise the locksmith…

Unless Dunstan can go up at least two gears, he can continue to plod around at Casey.

Gus needs to stay in defence for now, so I think it's Sparrow, Harmes and JJ to get extra minutes in the middle. Pickett might have a few more there cameos too. I really cant see TMac going back nor three tall forwards, so I'm expecting one of them or Jackson to be a late out.

I can't see Goodwin making huge positional changes. It is not his style.

Smith/Tomlinson play the Lever role.

Dunstan plays Viney's.

JJ stays on a wing.

Sparrow and Harmes continue to play as a defensive forwards with stints in the middle. One might even permanently run with Shae Bolton.

Brayshaw plays quarter back until Salem returns.

Tmac, BBB and Weed battle it out for the two key forward spots.

Bedford is medi-sub.

I would have thought Bedford gets in before Dunstan, but plays half-forward with Neal-Bullen taking over Viney's role. Melksham a big chance to be medi-sub. He's on 197 games and I suspect the club will try to get him to 200, using the medi-sub role, just like we did with Jones getting to 300.

TMac won't play back with Smith and Tomlinson waiting in the wings.

If they lose a KPD during a match, maybe as a stopgap, but not as a selection.

I agree.

TMac down back in Round 1 was a necessity because we lost Salem mid-match.

But we have Smith and Tomlinson ready to play, both of whom are fit and better defenders than TMac right now. Why would we force a square peg into a round hole by trying to make TMac a defender when we have Smith and Tomlinson who've already played a tall defender role (and well, too) in 2022?

It's possible we want to use Smith to replace Brayshaw, so that Brayshaw and/or Jordon can make up Viney's minutes in the middle. But even if we did that, we should still be playing Tomlinson over TMac as a key defender.

There are only two realistic options IMO. The first honours the "rule" that the 18 picked are the starting 18, with emergencies to come from the extended bench. Honouring that "rule", I wonder whether Jackson may be out injured. That would mean Weideman/TMac stay in to play Jackson's role.

The second option is that the starting 18 is prone to change and one of TMac/Weideman will actually be dropped.

As an aside, what is Melksham doing in the squad? Hasn't he been in zero form to speak of all year?

Well for what its worth, i don't think we need him down back given the depth and better options we have in J Smith and Tommo.

I disagree regarding the agility. The main attribute you require on the wing is not agility - its endurance. With TMac he has the added benefit in being able to take a contested mark and play a defensive role (if he is on the defensive wing). However, JJ is probably doing the role well enough to hold it and tbh it makes more sense in his development given where he is in his career and as stated the most likely outcome is Dunstan, J Smith coming in to fill in the Viney/Lever roles. The question is whether BBB comes in and then who goes out as a result.

One minor positive from Lever being out with covid protocols is that he has an extra week to get completely over his rolled ankle or whatever it was.

There's no way they will tinker with Gus's role at the mo.  Working a treat.

Jordan to cover more mid minutes with more TOG or Dunstan comes in.  Can't say ive seen/heard anything from Casey that would see Dunstan knocking the door down as a direct Viney replacement.  Maybe he's done enough though.

Thank god I'm not a gambling man! I was wrong but I was right about them not playing the 3 tall forwards as McDonald will go back.

Brayshaw will definitely play midfield he can be covered by Bowey, Rivers, Hunt and Smith down back. Dunstan won't come in.

We'll agree to disagree W... Gus is starring in the Winger HB role.  No change there imv especially if they bring Dunstan in vs Bedford.

I doubt that Angus will play on ball, he's doing too well at HB and/or on the wing. The coach will 'make do' with JJ/Sparrow/Harmes/Nibbler/Kozzy to fill Viney's absence. I wouldn't mind seeing Harmes having a 'run with' role with Bolton.

No way TMac will play on the wing. It was tried before and was a failed experiment. I doubt that he will play back either, although that would be my preference. Smith is clearly Goody's love child, so he will get the gig replacing Lever. Not sure where that leaves TMac. 3 talls forward isn't an option, so perhaps he's dropped or med sub.

Heard a snippet on the radio that AFL are not following the Victorian close contact rules on the basis that they give Vic and NSW clubs an advantage over other States.

Not sure I agree if that is the case

  • REPORT: Western Bulldogs

The next coach of the Melbourne Football Club faces the challenge of teaching his players how to win games against all comers. At times during this tumultuous season, that task has seemed daunting, made more so in light of the surprise news last week of the sacking of premiership coach Simon Goodwin. However, there were also some positive signs from yesterday’s match against the Western Bulldogs that the challenge may not be as difficult as one might think. The two sides presented a genuine football spectacle, featuring pulsating competitive play with eight lead changes throughout the afternoon, in a display befitting a finals match. The result could have gone either way and in the end, it came down to which team could produce the most desperate of acts to provide a winning result. It was the Bulldogs who had their season on the line that won out by a six point margin that fitted the game and the effort of both sides.

  • CASEY: Brisbane

The rain had been falling heavily in south east Queensland when the match began at Springfield, west of Brisbane. The teams exchanged early goals and then the Casey Demons proceeded like a house on fire in the penultimate game of the VFL season against a strong opponent in the Brisbane Lions. Sparked by strong play around the ground by seasoned players in Charlie Spargo and Jack Billings, a strong effort from Bailey Laurie and promising work from youngsters in Kynan Brown and  Koltyn Tholstrup, the Demons with multiple goal kickers firing, raced to a 27 point lead late in the opening stanza. A highlight was a wonderful goal from Laurie who brilliantly sidestepped two opponents and kicked beautifully from 45 metres out.
