What?

He dropped two marks which directly led to goals.

His best game was just two weeks ago in Round 1 and this was miles off that.

Apart from Gus, everyone made bad mistakes out there tonight (even Clarry got a ball in the middle ran forward and proceeded to somehow kick it down the oppositions throat).

Was at both games and from where I was sitting, tonight he was better. Tonight he stood up when lots around him were not, plus May was getting dominated tonight, whereas against the Dogs Maysie was able to help out a lot more.

Thought May was great in patches, especially early. Faded out and was soundly beaten in the air and comprehensively outplayed by Wright, who kept them in it.

I understand there is a structure and it isn’t necessarily 1on1 all the time, but May couldn’t keep up. Was found far behind the play multiple times.

6. Clarence Harding Oliver

Still don't know how he always gets his hands free. Always helps clear congestion

5. Brayshaw

20 marks for crying out loud. Worked his absolute butt off. Becoming such a nice outside option to have.

4. Joel Smith

Yep, echo statements that this is the best game of his career. Tireless worker, good job son.

3. Langdon

The runners really shined tonight in a game that lacked skill from either side. Never stops running and capped it off with goal of the year surely. Anyone who thinks he played a howler because of 3 bad kicks I think are a bit harsh.

2. Weideman

He clunked a lot, he didn't clunk some, he kicked 4, he missed 3. But he ultimately gave us something we needed. Well done Choofta, got a great view right behind your run up in the Punt Rd pocket for that beauty too.

1. Harmes

I'm really big on goals at crucial times when everyone else is missing and the team mindset is flat. Took them well and also with 8 score involvements. I think few work harder.

Unlucky: Gawn. Far from his best but showed a heap of leadership when it was needed.

Adjudication (Specsavers award)

Clean up the packs!
It’s an infringement free zone. Too much wrestlemania and head high contact.

Plus drop the man on the mark marionette farce.

Opposition hyperbole watch;

#25 overrated superannuant claim to fame? Swallowed the dog while supposedly on lollipop duty.

Positive; pleased to see two metre Peter’s career on the (w)right trajectory impressive.

Overall comment;

Dees 2022 it’s another great vintage in the making.

Viney - combining much better with Oliver, anyone noticed his 22 pace? He has found another gear, so happy for him.

He's actually properly fit for essentially the first time in his career with us.

Spoke about it on Gus & Gawny the other week - apparently his natural/ideal level is an endurance beast - something we've never seen at MFC.

Solid without being all that interesting, meaningful or spectacular.

6 - Oliver. Won us the game. Tore away from packs and kicked to forwards lace out. Just a terror.

5 - Brayshaw - My fave. Love him and everything he does. Like to think I'd play like that if I could run farther than the corner shop.

4 - Happy E - Legend. Love the way he plays the game. Always looking for a one-two and loves a goal.

3 - Bowey. Just can't get enough of his disposal. Love he's starting to get a little tougher too. So much time and plays the half back role well.

2 - Weid. Happy he got amongst it, but wasn't as enthused as others about his performance. Seems like a really nice guy and that, but just can't see him sticking around.. Had hoped to see Van Rooyen this game, but Sam went ok.

1 - Joel Smith - Not a fan, but his best game if you ask me. Credit where credit is due. Good spoils. Not terrible disposal. Stretched the lines. Gives us something the other defenders don't. Still, I doubt him.

Hon Mention: Fritsch. Style and technique (lower that hair though Bayley, lol). Loved how he went for the speccie at the end and did basically the same thing as he did in the GF and got one over the back. Cheeky.

99/100 times Brayshaw gets BOG for a 20 mark performance but Oliver was just too influential on the night.

6) Oliver

5) Brayshaw

4) Langdon- his GOTY nomination increased his rankings here.

3) Weid - you kick 4 goals you get votes.

2) Harmes - kicked 2 critical goals in the 3rd quarter. Good ones too.

1) Jackson - found it hard to give that last vote, but this guy is just dominating at the moment.

May can’t get votes tonight. Wright dominated the game in parts.

RETURN TO NORMAL by Whispering Jack

One of my prized possessions is a framed, autographed guernsey bearing the number 31 worn by my childhood hero, Melbourne’s champion six time premiership player Ronald Dale Barassi who passed away on 16 September 2023, aged 87. The former captain who went on to a successful coaching career, mainly with other clubs, came back to the fold in his later years as a staunch Demon supporter who often sat across the way from me in the Northern Stand of the MCG cheering on the team.
