Hyphenated Names

Featured Replies

Ever since I was a kid in the 50s and Melbourne had a ruckman named Dick Fenton-Smith running around, I was conscious of the importance of hyphenated names in the club’s history. After all, we produced the great Ivor Warne-Smith (pictured) who won Brownlow Medals in 1926 (in a premiership team) and 1928.

In 1996, the Demons created a league record of players with hyphenated names wins David and Donald Cockatoo-Collins and Tent Ormond-Allen on their list. They had that record all on their own until 2019 when the Tigers muscled in and equalled it with Callum Coleman-Jones, Riley Collier-Dawkins and Derek Eggmolesse-Smith.

But now, North Melbourne are homing in on a Melbourne record for the number of players on a club list with hyphenated names.

That will occur when the Roos draft Jason Horne-Francis in the November National Draft. They already have Luke Davies-Uniake and, after receiving Coleman-Jones from the Tigers, they are set to equal the record when Horne-Francis comes on board.

Could someone pluck a quartet of players out there in the draft with hyphenated names to help us keep our record intact.

I don't know how you could forget 2 crucial games from Audley Gillespie-Jones in 1935. We win!

Surely the double barrel gets a guernsey too with Neal Bullen and Kennedy Harris?

WJ. Don’t need a quartet. Just a trio given we have ANB.

I think Richmond had the current cravat title with Eggmolesse-Smith, Coleman-Jones and Collier-Dawkins.  Imagine if the Dees had 3 hyphens. It’d be snow season and cheeseboard jokes.
Yes Kangas set to assume the hyphenated supremacy!!

Eagles chasing Powell-Pepper to add to Petrevski-Seton.

It’s the Double hyphen, Double Sam draft double.

What happens to their kids when they marry someone with a hiphenated name

It depends. I'm a hyphen and my wife wanted to take my name, so our kid is a hyphen.

My sister I think wants to keep her name, so I'd say patriachy will win over with her kids and they'll take her fiance's name.

It is good having your name in your kids name though.

Either way, it's all Dutch to me...

(I just had to check in to this thread...)

It's been fascinating me, too, radar. I have double-barrelled grandchildren and am planning to be alive when the potentiality arrives in my family 😉

And watch out for a future thread, 'Single word names'.

West Coast possibly making a move up the ranks:  Sam Powell-Pepper, Sam Petrevski-Seton

Sam Powell-Pepper, the contracted midfielder is unlikely to land at West Coast but could still be on the move if interest from other rivals progresses. The Eagles' acquisition of priority target Sam Petrevski-Seton made it hard for them to also pursue Powell-Pepper, who is contracted for two more seasons but in search of more midfield opportunities

Joffrey Rothschild-Baillieu III.

MAKE IT HAPPEN!

Failing that, I’ll accept Archibald Mountbatten-St. George as sufficiently nob enough.

The origin of hyphenated names a long time ago was applicable to when an upper class woman married a lower class man. That way the upper class name could also be used to acknowledge the so called superior breeding of the resultant descendants. I hope that makes sense. It was all about snobbery.

One the dogs hyphenated players had a reasonable game in the GF: Roarke-Smith

I think the commentators say that to differentiate him from Bailey-Smith.

The other Bulldog with an apparently hyphenated name is Easton-Wood.  Or is that just Eastonwood?

Jay Kennedy-Harris?

My uncle sponsored Trent Ormond-Allen back in the 90s.

JKH seemed to lose the hyphen in his name at some point and just become Kennedy Harris.

JT. Please draft SA’s Nasiah Wanganeen-Milera.

I was of the belief ex North small Eddie Sainsbury was his biological father, leaving open the possibility of a triple barrelled name!!!

I’m not a hyphen but my surname is so long I could easily fit in two or three.

  • PREVIEW: Essendon

Not long ago, the narrative surrounding Melbourne was steeped in pessimism. There was some concern among the pundits (and even some fans) that the club would arrive at the AFL’s Gather Round still winless, vulnerable to a familiar adversary in the Essendon Football Club, and facing significant scrutiny from an ever-critical media on a national stage. Things have changed.

  • REPORT: Gold Coast

Steven King astutely identified the issues that had plagued the Melbourne Football Club over the past two and a half seasons when he auditioned for the newly created coaching role. The side that had claimed the 2021 premiership had become stodgy, slow-paced, and hesitant to take the initiative.
