The strike record of coaches second time around is not good. The only coaches to have won Premierships the second time (or more) around in the 21st century are Leigh Matthews at Brisbane (who had already coached to a Premiership at his first gig) and Mick Malthouse.

Might need to change the title of this thread to Welcome to Demonland - Carlton Schadenfreude.

What are they doing? Seriously laughable. A sham process to get a coach who is now over the sham and know they are left with another untried? Or a Scott?

True, But I reckon it’s due to blokes not been given a chance. If Hardwick or Clarko or bomber were sacked prior to their first flag, they would not have been hired elsewhere going on past history.

And if you're not? What board is going to entrust their precious list, supporter goodwill, sponsor goodwill, etc, not to mention a minimum 2 years of everyone's life, to a coach who failed last time around? On the off chance that maybe this time he'll come good.

A board would look at that as setting themselves up to fail. It's resignation time if Mr Failed Coach (Maybe Not) turns out to be Mr Failed Coach (Actually Yes).

Carlton board under pressure to make this look like a proper process and are now doing a actual interviews. Ross was semi promised the job/thought he had the job and doesn’t want to risk not getting the job and has pulled the pin.

My point is any coach would be better the next time, for instance Voss who has been with Port and done very well.

It is a bigger risk taking a punt on an untried coach, eg Shaw, Teague in recent years

That’s how I have read it. Surely a process to a split board not so keen on Lyon will just be a humiliation for him.

My question is if not Carlton - who would take Lyon given his perceived baggage from the alleged issue with the female staff member from Freo??

I still can't get over the fact that Carlton sacked Teague after 50 games (including a half-season as caretaker, a 17-game messed up season, and this year which he spent half-sacked from about round 4).

He brought Carlton 21 wins in 50 games after the Blues' previous 40 games included just 4 wins.

That's notably better than Paul Roos managed at Melbourne (21 wins from 60 games).

One question remains - was it Teague or others who pursued the strategy of bringing in a multitude of speedy, high profile and high cost rebounding types without defensive mettle? Because if he can wash his hands of that major error then his record is pretty good for coaching a dysfunctional club that can display hubris even while winning the wooden spoon.

It does also make me reflect on the priceless quality of the 'enthusiastic humility' which seems to be driving value at Melbourne now. We must support that attitude above any other single factor.

All very bizarre - new President ringing around to get a coach. On Footy Classified last night Caro questioning Ross Lyon, who looked as though he’d been sold a  pup by Sayers. He just about choked when Caro asked him “how are your powerpoints?” I don’t think he thought that was the deal he made with Sayers. Gerard on 360 tonight pondered that Sayers hadn’t brought his board along with him, and has had to suck up a committee process to recruit a new coach, with a couple on the committee not friendly to Lyon, who then knew his goose was cooked and threw in the towel. Sayers may be the shortest tenure president in Carlton history!

My guess is Ross wanted the job, minimal questions asked. But a proper process (questionable if it would be at Carlton) would dig up the shady stuff when he left Freo. Leaving him no coaching job and jeopardising his cushy media gig.

If you trust in your ability to coach and you have nothing to hide, why run away from a selection process? 
He said they have his resume already as they’ve seen him coach. Yes they’ve seen you coach 0 flags.

It’s just too suss. Saying on Footy Classified he’s happy and even wants to go through a process was just lip service, keeping up his good guy public persona. 
Suddenly pulls out when Carlton hold him to one?

Funnily enough, I don’t think Teague was a bad coach. He was certainly let down by his players against Port Adelaide in a performance that was their 186 and a few weeks earlier when they lost to North Melbourne when a win would have put them in the top 8.

They have a list which IMO is on par with Essendon and Fremantle and is much better than Collingwood. It wouldn’t surprise if they settle down under their new coach (whoever he might turn out to be) and even made the finals next year.

My guess is that it's not the selection process that's troubling Lyon. I presume he's concerned about the reason for the shift in thinking which suggests there are people on the Board who don't want him. If I were Lyon, I wouldn't want to coach any club that didn't have unanimous Board support for my appointment. I think he's been wise to avoid a fractured club.
