When Tommo is back we do have the option to put Petty forward. But I agree our key position players are mostly on the wrong side of 29. Which is why I’m very strong on keeping Weideman. 

When we have to replace one of our current key forwards it needs to be someone better than Weid.

Terrific player but at his age you don't want to give up too much to get him.

Back injuries can be chronic as well. Would the Hawks do a third rounder for him?

Would we? I think Hawthorn will be looking to cash in on his last years of potentially decent footy. They’re not struggling to clear cap space.

Back surgery is intense. Not that ACL surgery is easy, but back surgery is different. And he's 30.

That aside, and assuming he's fully fit with no long term increased risk of injury, I'm not convinced this is the right fit.

Where would he play, and at whose expense? He's too good to be depth (i.e. he'd only go somewhere to be best 22), so he has to be a walk-up start in our 22, which means he has to be an upgrade on TMac/Brown, or Fritsch, or Spargo/ANB/Pickett.

If he costs us peanuts (salary wise, he won’t cost us anything in a trade as he’s a free agent), then isn’t he far better depth than Mitch Brown?

...but he wants out & Mitchell might not want him there. A Clarko man and paid out on some in regard to how he was booted.

If he's fit he would be an asset.

Swans landed Franklin after a flag and Richmond landed Lynch after theirs.
And we're looking at Gunston .... Please.
Aim abit forken higher.

Can't see us getting him cheaply. 

He is contracted for 2022.  Won their BnF last year.  Hawks were rumoured to want a high first round pick for him from Collingwood last year. 

This year Hawks are looking to boost their draft hand and generally want top 25 picks.

Sure he has had injuries this year but doubt his trade value will be much lower than mid-2nd round.  That is not to say mfc won't do it.

Good player, still playing good footy when on the park. premiership experience, proven leader, 

Love it, straight swap for Sam Weideman, Hawks get a young developing key forward, we get an experienced Vet to help us now.

Played one game this year.  Two sets of surgery on his back.  30 years of age.  Still contracted until end 2022.

Why do people think Hawthorn is willing to let him go? If he was serviceable, they would be keeping him next year. 

Lewis, Hodge, Bruest were all useful in  young teams which needed leadership.  Now that those teams are contenders you don't need those types any more.

We don't need to be doing the Hawks any favours.

Agree with this. Adding a gun small forward makes more sense from a fit perspective (i.e. Bolton, Cameron, Ryan, Butters, Rozee or Papley). The spots of Brown, TMac or Spargo would have to be the most at risk if we land Gunston.

ANB's role is different and plays more in the midfield. Pickett has explosive pace. Fritsch is our best forward. Jackson is a unicorn.

That said, a fit Gunston is a very flexible player because he is such a great kick and has been able to apply pressure. He can play back and wing also.
