Vanders or Bowser as sub i hope.

I thought BBB was a certainty.

Talk about a Jon Snow moment.

It is a mistake imo. We had nobody to kick to for large parts of the Essendon game. Also, McDonald plays 5x better when another key forward in the side. Brown had earnt his spot.

I thought Brown would come in, but to be fair, we didn't have anyone to kick to because we flooded up the ground and played defensively, not because we didn't have enough tall players.

Don’t want a tarnished debut.

I'd have picked Brown, but if it's wet I can understand why we might choose to stay small.

Would prefer Bowey isn't the medical sub for his debut, and given Chandler's done it so many times might be vandenBerg's turn.

Also what's with Jones being injured?

I reckon Brown will come in against Port. Meanwhile, had we kicked straight last week, we win easily. McDonald and Fritsch need to get it done this week.

Knicked a calf at training on Wednesday.

AVB would make a decent sub but perhaps one week too early

Jones has a slight calf strain...

Utility Nathan Jones, who was listed as the AFL Medi-sub (unused) against Essendon, has suffered a minor calf strain and will miss this week’s match.

Jones left the track early during Wednesday’s main training session at Casey Fields, with scans later confirming a small strain.

“This is unfortunate timing for Nathan, given he has been able to perform at a high level consistently for the past month in the VFL,” General Manager AFL Performance Alan Richardson told Melbourne Media.

It's a good side for the opposition we are playing.  Brown more likely for the following week I think.

Don't mind a settled team. Giants Backline is not overly exciting and time for Kozzie to buzz around them. with Fritta and Mac to dominate.

Wow, no changes.

There is stability in the team. This equates to cohesion.

Unfortunately, they are are not rewarding players doing well for Casey or performing badly for MFC team.

There is pressure for positions, but the selection committee is indicating that once in the side you have to do alot wrong to be omitted.

This should be the time for some experiments as the end of the season is coming quickly and that is when we need to know our best 22, the match ups, and different role players abilities.

Missed an opportunity,  I reckon.

Apart from the weather, Brown does not suit ourmethod inside 50.  Seems we deliver defensively outside a V at 45 degrees to make the ball easier to trap in.  We then have secondary midfielders present in the V to take inboard marks for easier set shots.  Happened a lot on Saturday night.

this means a big forward has to lead to the pockets to honour the system, which seems crazy.  The other option is to offer the secondary lead.  Seems contrary to what someone like BBB would naturally do (lead at the ball carrier).  Interesting to see if we alter the method or how the personnel play.

so BBB does not fit our defensive offensive method.  Wonder what he has to demonstrate to overcome this?

All three you mention have not really fired a shot in a month. I hope they all prove me wrong, but I think we will again struggle with forward connection, but can understand the thinking given the weather forecast.

I'm surprised that GWS have dropped their uber-tagger De Boer for this game.

No Hogan

will make the Casey night match a potential blockbuster

Clarry would be very happy now with De Boer not playing.

Must admit still do not like forward structure. I think people are right in that we need a full forward to help FMAC and Fritta. It is probebly going to be wet so I suppose no change is ok.

  • PODCAST: Gold Coast

I’ll be away for the next few weeks, so Binman will be holding the fort for our podcasts covering the Suns, Bombers and Lions matches. As a result, there will be no live podcasts during this period, and we won’t be taking calls or voicemails. Binman will still be dipping into this thread to select a few questions to answer, while also combining the long-form Stats Files podcast with the Demonland Podcast for these shows. Your questions and comments are a huge part of what makes the podcast work, so please post anything you’d like to ask or say below and we’ll do our best to give you a shout-out on the show. Please try to keep each post focused on one specific topic or player to make podcast preparation a little easier. If you have multiple topics you’d like to raise, please put them in separate posts.

  • PREVIEW: Gold Coast

Melbourne’s slow starts have been a troubling theme for a while. Against the Suns, they started slowly in both of their games, they trailed by 5.7.37 to 0.1.1 at quarter time at Peoples First Stadium in Round 16. This season, the story has remained the same and if the Demons fail to shake off this issue against the unbeaten Gold Coast Suns, they will be in serious danger of capitulating once again in their Easter Sunday showdown.
