Their honesty

  • Outside of a one-point loss to the hands of the Crows at the Adelaide Oval, the Melbourne Demons could not have started this season much better than what they have.
  • It took some convincing, but the football public has seemingly come to terms with the fact that Melbourne, unusually, just aren't that bad of a side anymore.
  • Just think putting Lynch up against Gawn we might see him disintegrate before our very eyes.
  • You could lock Gawn in now for the three votes if he’s up against Lynch.
  • SCG: Save us going to watch us get Deestroyed Live.
  • Not expecting much from this one. If we get this game down to a goal or two in the end I'll be impressed.
  • Watching Carlton [censored] the bed against WC yesterday was made somehow less enjoyable because it was at the SCG. Such a crap oval.

Their tactics

  • Roughead will again have his hands full, likely facing off against the meat-eating-machine, Tom McDonald.
  • Moore should take Weideman or the resting ruck.
  • I would personally play Maynard on Fritsch, Quaynor on Pickett and Noble on Spargo.
  • Our Mids should Rove Gawn's Taps like other teams done to Grundy.
  • Cox has to come in. Lynch was okay but Cox can nullify Gawn and play forward. I assume Pendles might have to take the Oliver job. Maybe Crisp for Petracca.
  • Is our dogs breakfast game plan [strangle-ball] better suited to SCG in this instance, as opposed to attempting a shoot-out, or even keeping pace with Dreamons on the MCG?

Their anxiety

  • Kosi Pickett a worry.
  • McCreery needs to shut down Salem.
  • Play Pendles on Gawn when he rests forward?
  • We kicked 1 goal after QT against Sydney on this ground a few weeks back.
  • Gawn and Jackson duo is a big worry for us if Grundy can’t get up.
  • Playing top side in the comp —what are our chances folks?

Their delusion

  • We can win this.
  • I just can’t see how we lose this game.
  • Who stops Petracca though? A shame we delisted Wills, he would have been perfect for that role.

Their schadenfreude

  • Hurts Melbourne in their wallet = tick.

Their trolls

  • It might have been a good chance to pilot playing this fixture at Mt Kosciuszko, with a view to putting it at Hotham Heights when there is no pandemic - it is a Demons leg-up game, after all.
  • Poor Deeeees fans, the MCC toffs, cant have their usual chardonnay, Pimms, brandy lime and soda, plus their cucumber sandwiches, in their usual plush surrounds.
  • Pressure all on Melb, nobody will take us seriously, so maybe an upset brewing, Crows did beat em.
  • Love to beat this mob, then their fans, being in Sydney, can head to the snowfields of Mt Kossie, which is obviously be a lot closer than the usual ski chalets of Mt Buller here.

It's not as much fun to read the opposition fans' sites now that people are taking us seriously.

Where's all the "who have they beaten?", "Pretenders!" posts gone?

I'm also getting a bit sick of my non-MFC friends saying stuff like "well, if my team doesn't win, I hope you guys get up this year". I want us to be hated.

Similarly to Geelong post 2007 and Richmond post 2017, if we go all the way this year, that sentiment would evaporate pretty quickly. Maybe a flag is what we need to be genuinely hated...?

From my experience with Richmond, by the third flag they’ll be well jack of us. Give it time.

Are you sure ? - I have to say, for the cheap thrill of it, I love reading opposition sites where they express the fear of getting flogged by Melbourne, wetting themselves about Gawn (where they usually use words reserved for fictional Marvel superheroes) and green with envy about Trac and Oliver.

I had a hawthorn mate carefully explain to me that everyone will be happy for you for the first one, then everyone will hate you.

Have to imagine Grundy gets up for this one? surely?

Thanks for the laughs QD> Excellent research as usual.

But how out of touch these Pies Trolls are?

As a proud long standing MFC and MCC member, the MCC is the most egalitarian and best value for money club in the universe, club elections held, brilliant organising.... You just need patience (15years in the case of a junior and 25 years for adult) in the waiting list to join. Not expensive by any measure.

and the Pies ?- when was the last time any of these trolls had a say in running their club - 1990's was the last election to the fiefdom run by McGuire and mates.

Any what's wrong with skiing anyway - its a great pasttime the world over.

He was listed as two-three (which includes the bye) so I'd say not.  He's their most valuable asset and has had neck problems in the past.  They'll take no chances with him if there is any doubt at all.

I see Bucks is using the Collingwood forums as a sounding board again.

Collingwood previously have thrown De Goey on ball against us and it's worked for them, so i'll be interested to see if they try that again, they may not if Grundy is missing. you'd be thinking we should be expecting some dominance in the air

Grundy is a meccano man, he is NOT worth anywhere near what they paid him last year. This is the root of Collingwoods problems.. Overpay then the Sheeeit hits the fan when they cant make ends meet. Even if he does play Max will take whatever is left of his influence and hurl it to the seagulls!

Loved this: the Dreamons

its funny, becuase its true. At least in terms of dreaming of a flag.

In the other sense - ie dream on buddy - it did make reflect for some reason that we have had such a great season thus far, and we are so evidently the real deal, that the dream could be a reality this year.

And that lions win was actually really important in terms of the dream becoming a reality because it gave us an incredible three game break from the teams all on 32 points, in particular the cats third on the ladder and Lions fourth.

If we lose that game, Lions are on 36 points and we are on 40 points and top 2 becomes a little les likely. And the risk of playing the Lions at the Gabba (or perhaps Port at Adelaide Oval) more likely.

The Port game in round 17 will have a similar importance. And possibly the Cats in the last round.

Top two finish means our first final at the G and the chance of not having to leave the state, even if we lose the qualifying final. A big advantage

2018 had a dream on buddy vibe - we got a on a roll at the back end and tried to surf the emotion to a flag.

Different vibe this year. A professional, serious vibe about us.

And we will be able to use that vibe and the experience of 2018 and the pain of the preliminary to fuel our finals campaign this year

De Goey goes missing when a little accountability is placed on him. Hibberd will school him when forward and he’s not a concern in the middle for mine.

  • GAMEDAY: Hawthorn

It’s game day and the Demons are chasing a fourth straight win as we take on the high flying Hawks at the G. After decades of being tormented by the Hawks the Dees will be keen to extend their 7 year dominance over Hawthorn.

  • NON-MFC: Round 09

Round 9 kicks off out west with the Dockers hosting a Collingwood side resting several stars. Fremantle need to make a statement on their home deck after some disappointing form on the road, while the Magpies will be keen to maintain their Top 2 position. Friday night sees a must-win clash between two sides desperate to stay in touch with the eight. St Kilda have shown glimpses while Carlton are clinging to relevance after a flat start to the season. Saturday’s twilight game at Marvel pits the Bombers against a struggling Sydney outfit. Essendon can’t afford another close match against a lower-ranked side, while the Swans risk sliding down the ladder even further. Up in Darwin, the fourth-placed Suns will look to extend their stay in the top four. The Bulldogs have hit their stride with three big wins on the trot and will be very keen to consolidate on their momentum. The always fiery Showdown looms as pivotal for both clubs. Adelaide are eyeing a spot in the Top 4 with a win, while Port Adelaide’s season could slip away if they drop another game and fall further behind the pack. Sunday begins with a yawn fest between Richmond and West Coast. The Tigers need to bank the points to stay clear of the bottom two, while the Eagles are still chasing their first win of the year. The Giants face one of the league’s toughest road trips as they travel to GMHBA Stadium to face the Cats. With GWS at risk of a third straight loss, Geelong will be eager to consolidate their position inside the eight and start their climb up the ladder. The round wraps up with the top-of-the-table Lions heading to Ninja Stadium to take on the second-last Roos. The Lions should easily take care of the struggling Roos who might be powerless against the best in the comp. Who are you tipping and what are the best results for the Demons?

  • PREVIEW: Hawthorn

Melbourne and Hawthorn who face off against each other this week have more in common than having once almost merged and about to wear a blue jumper with a red v triangle and an embroidered picture of a bird on the front. They also share the MCG as their main home ground, their supporters are associated with the leafy suburbs of Melbourne and in recent times, James Frawley graced the colours of both teams. Even more recently, both have bounced back from disastrous five game losing streaks to start off a season. Of course, the Hawks turned their bounce into a successful leap from the bottom of the ladder into a finals appearance, making it to the semifinals in 2024 and this year, they’re riding high in third place on the AFL table. The Demons are just three games into their 2025 bounce back, and are yet to climb their way out of the bottom four although they are sitting a game and percentage out of the top eight. However, with the current sportsbet odds of $3.90 to win this week’s encounter, it seems a forlorn hope that their upward progression will continue much longer.

  • REPORT: West Coast

On a night of counting, Melbourne captain Max Gawn made sure that his contribution counted. He was at his best and superb in the the ruck from the very start of the election night game against the West Coast Eagles at Optus Stadium, but after watching his dominance of the first quarter and a half of the clash evaporate into nothing as the Eagles booted four goals in the last ten minutes of the opening half, he turned the game on its head, with a ruckman’s masterclass in the second half.  No superlatives would be sufficient to describe the enormity of the skipper’s performance starting with his 47 hit outs, a career-high 35 possessions (22 of them contested), nine clearances, 12 score involvements and, after messing up an attempt or two, finally capping off one of the greatest rucking performances of all time, with a goal of own in the final quarter not long after he delivered a right angled pass into the arms of Daniel Turner who also goaled from a pocket (will we ever know if the pass is what was intended). That was enough to overturn a 12 point deficit after the Eagles scored the first goal of the second half into a 29 point lead at the last break and a winning final quarter (at last) for the Demons who decided not to rest their champion ruckman at the end this time around.
