Christian Salem Re-Signs for 5 Years

Underrated player and so important to our set up, no idea where his negotions are beyond to say the club is desperate to have him as a long term demon, and i've not seen/heard anything to suggest he won't be.

of course there is significant interest from the outside, and he's one of the group who was pretty unhappy with the end last year, but i expect him to sign a deal at some stage and stick around, especially with us winning a few games.

4 year deal at $550k would be starting offer. He’s a lock for our starting 18 and in my current top 10 players at the club (#9).

Not sure if this is overs or unders in the current environment.  I know the cap was increased but post Covid, revenue is lower and budgets tighter.  I thought Oliver and Petracca would be $700k-$750k per year on their next contracts. It certainly is huge $$$ for blokes in their early-mid20s, or indeed anyone imv.

Girls in the prelim, blokes haven't dropped a game, quietly managing resigning our talent in an orderly fashion.

This must be what it feels like to be a Hawthorn supporter.

We're missing the winning premierships bit (we live in hope), but yeah, things are running smoothly at the moment.

I will assume youre not being serious.

Don't get me wrong, Salem is a gun and may well give the AA squad a shake this year. But he's by no means a marquee player, and not the sort of player that you can build a midfield around like Oliver or Petracca. I'd very much doubt he'll be receiving godfather type offers that we can't match. Certainly, rival clubs will make enquiries, but I'm not worried about re-signing him at this stage.

He is the Lachie Whitfield, Daniel Rich half-back type player.   Worth their weight in gold even if not top money earners.

A large part of why Salem 'looks better' this year is because we have better ball movement processes and positioning and a mid field who understand their roles better.

He has always had exquisite skills and footy IQ and been very, very good and under rated on this board.

The most consistent and reliable player we've had in the last 20 years.

Clayton Oliver easily takes this one out.

Salem is an important role player and ball user for us though.

It was Pick 2 (Kelly) & 20 if I remember correctly.

Salem is a very good player. lacks pace and long kicking but has poise and excellent kicking / decision making. Certainly wouldn't be a top earner for us, he'd be one we'd look at to not be on top coin if we are to get a flag one day

The slim shady doo is not great but once he keeps playing well we can forgive it!  has always been one of my favs.

The Kelly v Salem/hunt/Tyson point makes no sense. We were never going to select Kelly, if we took pick 2 to the draft it was going to be Billings. IMO id take Salem over Billings the others are just a bonus. Also.... Tyson lead to Pruess which lead to Brown. So more accurately it's pick 2 (Billings) for Salem/Hunt/Brown

He really has stepped it up this season.   Could be in the AA discussions in some circles

Rarely gets beaten in a one on one. Must have been learning from Jetta. Doesn't look it, but is super strong

Melbourne traded out:

picks 2 (GWS used it on Kelly),

22 (on-traded to Brisbane, who selected Gardiner) and

72 (passed)

in exchange for

-picks 9 (Salem),

-57 (Hunt) and

-Dom Tyson (94 games)

who was traded for pick 62 (unsure who that was) and Preuss (who we got 2 years back up, then traded for pick 31.

Then 31 (plus 43) became 25 (Caleb Poulter).

25, 68, 69 and our 2021 1st (currently 17) became 18 (Bowie at 21), 19 (Laurie at 22) and Brisbane's 2021 2nd (currently 21). (That's currently a win of +700 points, or the equivalent of pick 27).

If Bowie and/or Laurie turn out to be half decent, that is a decent flip off Tyson.

It was interesting to see him at the end of the GWS game in discussion with Josh Kelly and Jayden Hunt. If I recall correctly, they were all at Brighton Grammar together. That school must have had a tremendous First XVIII in their final year.

Along with Luke McDonald & Jack Billings, I believe.

  • 2 weeks later...

Sam Edmund on SEN just said that Christian Salem will be staying at the Dees and it's just a matter of timing before it's announced.

Continued by saying he wants to stay, and the dees want him staying as well.

HEAVEN OR HELL by The Oracle

Clashes between Melbourne and St Kilda are often described as battles between the forces of heaven and hell. However, based on recent performances, it’s hard to get excited about the forthcoming match between these two sides. It would be fair to say that, at the moment, both of these teams are in the doldrums. The Demons have become the competition’s slow starters while the Saints are not only slow to begin, they’re not doing much of a job finishing off their games either. About the only th

    THE BLOW by Whispering Jack

Narrm’s finals prospects took a crushing blow after the team’s insipid performance at Optus Stadium against a confident Waaljit Marawar in the first of its Doug Nicholls Round outings for 2024.  I use the description “crushing blow” advisedly because, although the season is not yet at it’s halfway mark, the Demons have now failed abysmally in two of their games against teams currently occupying bottom eight places on the ladder.  The manner in which these losing games were played out w

HALF FULL by KC from Casey

It was a case of the Casey Demons going into a game with a glass half full in their match up against the Brisbane Lions at Casey Fields on Saturday. As the list of injured and unavailable AFL and VFL listed players continues to grow and with Melbourne taking all three emergencies to Perth for the weekend on a “just in case” basis, its little brother was always destined to struggle. Casey was left with only eight AFL listed players from who to select their team but only two - an out-of-form

GAMEDAY: Rd 10 vs West Coast

It's Game Day and the Demons have returned to the site of their drought breaking Premiership to take on the West Coast Eagles in what could very well be a danger game for Narrm at Optus Stadium. A win and a percentage boost will keep the Dees in top four contention whilst a loss will cast doubt on the Dees flag credentials and bring them back to the pack fighting for a spot in the 8 as we fast approach the halfway point of the season.

    WARNING by William from Waalitj

As a long term resident of Waalitj Marawar, I am moved to warn my fellow Narrm fans that a  danger game awaits. The locals are no longer the easybeats who stumbled, fumbled and bumbled their way to the good fortune of gathering the number one draft pick and a generational player in Harley Reid last year. They are definitely better than they were then.   Young Harley has already proven his worth with some stellar performances for a first year kid playing among men. He’s taken hangers, k
