We must have another trade in the works for a key position player or ruck.

If not, I will be extremely disappointed in the club if we go into next season with only Gawn and Grundy as genuine ruck options and no back up.

Jackson, Weideman, M Brown and Daw all out this year decimates our key depth. Will need to pick up a cheap ruck back-up in case Gawn or Grundy go down.

Get Liam Reidy 204 cm fwd ruck

I'll say it again, I thought the point of entering into trades was to improve our list.

The Hunt deal didn't improve our list, the draft pick swap didn't improve our list, any potential deal for Tomlinson won't improve our list and this deal won't improve our list.

Why are we trading out handy depth players for crappy draft picks that are being sent to other clubs?

Time for Tim Lamb to put on his big boy pants and get some results.

I concur. I sincerely hope Lamb has something in the works, because Grundy ain't the be all and end all if we want a flag in 2023. He does little to improve the deficiencies we experienced in 2022. I do not think any of the players we lost are best 22, aside from Hunt, who was always a fringe selection. However, we can't just go to the draft and get a couple of mediocre kids and think our depth will hold up. Take some depth from other clubs, ones who might be AFL ready if they are required.

Being from SA and a mad Redlegs fan I'd say keep ya grubby hands of him.

He is only 196cm which is a little worryingat AFL level.  But as a back up he would be good, he is also handy up fwd.  Not only did he win the Jack Oatey medal he won the club Best and Fairest and came 6th in the Magarey Medal (SANFL Brownlow)

Very good option, but also stay away 😉

Im a Redleg also @Travy14 the boy can play he's won a flag with the legs  time to do it at AFL level.

I don’t want to bang on about our Ruck/forward depth but I have thought that it was our greatest weakness even with LJ/Sam/Majak and Mitch on the list. So I am hopeful that JT / Tim Lamb are Focussing on suitable replacements, we fell over in latter stages of this year due to a lack of suitable options. Majak to injured, Mitch to light, LJ mentally checked out and Sam on the never to be played List. Now is the time to be bold, go after a competent forward and a young ruckman that we can develop under Gawn and Grundy’s tutelage and forget about bringing smalls in on the  Rookie List. Get the best talls available to fill the holes or we could be in the same position again next year. As previously mentioned, there are some VG options at state level and Casey, Ellison and Bell leap to mind. We are freeing up salary so must have someone on the radar for next year so let’s top up sensibly this year.

Although I am sorry that Sam didn’t work out for MFC I wish him all the best at Bombers he could do alright as a lead up forward standing next to Wright in their forward line. Good luck Sam safe travels.!!

Lloyd is only saying what’s been on Demonland for past 3-4 years.  Captain Obvious at work !!! I do agree that it’s a free swing for the Dons. A future 3rd round pick which is usually in the 40s is a free swing for a player like the Weid.

THE AGE
As Michael Gleeson reported, Melbourne are poised to trade Sam Weideman to Essendon in a move that could unlock a series of other trades, starting with Luke Jackson to the Dockers. But Essendon great Matthew Lloyd has some concerns about the forward who has been on the fringes at the Demons for several seasons.

I suppose if you’re getting him for not much, there’s nothing to lose,” Lloyd told Trade Radio.

“He’s got to get more competitive. He’s got to get nastier. If he doesn’t take the mark, he’s a bit poor at ground level. He rucked in the grand final at VFL level, he fought pretty hard in wet conditions, but then when he comes up to the AFL level he just really lacks confidence.

“That may be because he’s always in and out. He’s got talent, but he hasn’t had the fight at AFL level to prosper consistently.”

Will be a shame if it finally clicks for Weid after 7 or 8 years on our list but I guess we've run out of patience.

If the Weid deal goes through are there any ruck solutions we could go for? Maybe an okayish state league player we could rookie?

Plenty of other state league big guys out there too.

i'm throwing Brayden Crossley's name out there again

Then there's also Hamish Free from South Fremantle in the WAFL who was named in their team of the year. Also 24, 202cm and 103kg. Though he is from WA, so more of a flight risk.

you'd think any chance to pay afl he'd take it but also who cares if in 2yrs the eagles throw coin at him to replace NicNat he's depth and we have 2x AA's ahead of him so we'll get a handy trade for him and we'd be able to just rinse and repeat the next state league ruck or grab someone off the trade merry-go-round

Interesting one, probably would have preferred just to hang on to him than trade away for tin.

we'd lose him as an OOC player at the end of '23 anyway, no way he'd sign on again then so may as well let him go now if he's not in the plans while he has a little bit of value

I seriously don't understand what our ruck list management plan has been. Last year we re-sign Weid for 2 years on presumably low money, and groom him as a backup ruck/forward. He was a failure as a forward at AFL level this year, but was playing as the 1st ruck at Casey, and acquitted himself well in the finals.

If we don't see any potential in Weid as a ruck, why did we re-sign him? We could have drafted or traded for a ruckman in their early 20's, and groomed them under Max. Instead we got an aging Daw.

ruckman have too much scope to go wrong, when they're drafted as an 18yo they still have so much development still to go -as in 4-5 more years- yes we've had some success over the years but recently King, Flip, Bradtke not so much. it's a much better strategy to let other clubs develop them/let them develop outside the system and then nab them when they're ready to go/proven. so i actually don't have too much of an issue with our strategies in this department

Lloyd’s the ultimate knee jerk reactor. Last thing he saw or heard is the definitive truth. Until tomorrow at least.

Hunt wasn't a trade. He exercised his free agency rights.

We traded a bunch of picks we were not going to use in order to get one we will eventually use. If that doesn't constitute improving our list then no pick swap could ever improve our list.

Now you're complaining about a "potential deal for Tomlinson", the details of which don't exist. Surely if he's 5th in line for a key defensive role next year but on $500k, you can see how trading him might improve our list?

And whilst I don't know if trading Weideman is the right move, we barely played him all year and the proposed pick is in the 3rd round.

Good luck to Weid. We have given him many opportunities and it hasn't worked out. I think him leaving is the best for both parties

Roos Coach Darren Crocker has assembled a team chock-full of competitive and highly skilful players who outclassed the Brisbane Lions in the Grand Final to remain undefeated throughout Season 9. A huge achievement in what was a dominant season by North. For Melbourne fans, the season was unfortunately one of frustration and disappointment
