Why on earth did we offer him a 2 year deal when no one wanted him last year?

Doubt it was on much itโ€™s not like he was in demand, if he turned it round we get a player for minimal outlay if he doesnโ€™t then nothing lost.

The real question is do we continue to persist or give other players a chance. Not necessarily jvr, in the here and now Mitch Brown might also deliver more

VFL footballer unfortunately. ย

Yes.ย

JVR has played one great game against the North witches hats and otherwise been a steady role player at Casey finding his feet.

He needs to put a month of solid form together before even being considered.ย

Mitch Brown, a smaller forward line and some left field options are better than Weid. But theyโ€™re all better options than going with a kid at this crucial stage of finding his confidence in the VFL.

It pains me to admit but for once you are right DS

I would definitely play M Brown. Always looks like a natural key forward to me but does suffer at times from poor accuracy. But he is tall, gets to contests at least to bring the ball to ground. Not our long term future but we should be concentrating on what we need right now, whatever it will take to get the final prize again this season.ย

I see him as a journeyman in a forward line which is all give and go ,flashy pinging the ball at the goal( yep that's you Trac) defensive pressure ( which is essential).

Basically always at risk at getting in each other's way but trusting someone will do the business .

Every forwardย  and defence needs a journeyman ,maybe in this case just until they sort out the A grade forward line. Weid OUT M. Brown in.

Not sure TMac will be back in one week myselfย

Don't think he has what it takes unfortunately, having said that last night our forward line entries were very chaotic and not helpful for the big forwardsย

Can't fathom why he can't create contests at least. Comes down to appetite for contact i think. He just doesn't seem to have it unfortunatelyย

It is now well-past the stage whereย  the Weed might 'seem' to '...not have it...'; he capably displayed that on far too many opportunities in the longer-term and recent past.ย

ย

He just doesn't have any presence.

To quote Roy Keane 'When I've not quite been at the races, I'll smash into someone to get myself going'.ย

There's been plenty of times and yesterday included where he could have injected some physicality but he's just too nice a footballer.

Not everybody can grow into an AFL player. Itโ€™s cut throat and you need some mongrel, some aggression and an extremely high desire to succeed.ย

I think Sam is very talented footy wise, great kick of the ball, fast on his feet and can clunk a mark here and there, but he lacks in the character attributes described above, which you cannot teach or learn.ย

I think he will get dropped and now falls behind M. Brown and possibly JVR as our forward line depth.ย

Would kick you 100 goals at local level, doesn't have it for AFL

I know itโ€™s been tried before but not for long

Play him at CHB for a heap of games at Caseyย

What have we got to loseย

It is starting to look like he will never make it as a forwardย

And he may gain some confidenceย

I watched him really closely on the weekend and he appeared to give up on himself in a few marking contests. This is not to say that he didnโ€™t try, but he didnโ€™t force himself to compete and scrap and fight - and not accept defeat. Sadly youโ€™ve just got to have that to be an AFL footballer in the modern game - especially as a big bloke in our team with the way we play.

Nobody wants to see him succeed more, but you canโ€™t play at this level on confidence, youโ€™ve got to play on belief and instinct. Heโ€™s just not going to be a regular senior footballer.

To learn more tricks or aptitudes when he shirks a contest on most occasions? He's had his chance, is too easily removed from the action by opponents (operating in 'gentle' mode lest they give away an obvious free kick beforeย  goal), does not have the strength to stand his ground effectively or to block an opponent. Back to Casey - long time.

He doesnโ€™t have a competitive bone in his body. Delist/trade for peanuts come years end

He's contracted for another year.

Weid hasn't been performing, despite actually having his best ever season return on goals per game.

I've been trying to out my finger on what his issue is, because I don't like the descriptions about him not being competitive or caring or trying hard etc are quite right.

He seems to get caught in the wrong position a lot. Not in enough space to lead to the ball, but also not where the ball falls. It often drops in front of him or goes over his head. Does he misread the flight? Does he not move to the right areas?

Pack marks aren't his strength, but he tends to stay still a lot. Why isn't he moving into space, or trying to get the sit on packs by coming in from the side?

What actually is he lacking? Is it his skill/application, or is it the role he is trying to /being asked to play? He looks so much better when roaming around a bit more, taking marks etc.

He isn't a full time AFL forward.ย  He doesn't have enough tricks.ย  However, he could be a reasonable defender and I think he'd be ok at the role that Jackson fills.ย  He seems to enjoy the ruck role and it does get him into the play.ย  I actually thought his game against Hawthorn when he took Jackson's spot wasn't bad, but he got dropped for Jackson.ย  Unfortunately we don't really need another tall defender and the second ruck role is taken care of.ย

It is a pity Sam has gone backwards. Perhaps he should be tried in a minor defensive role for Casey. We need another quality forward , I would haveย  trialled Thommo or J.Smith up forward in the reserves . J.Smith probably only has this year to prove himself , he seams to get a lot of injuries playing defence . Another one of our problem is Langdon is out we tend to struggle on his wing .

You can only trade players if they are under contract howeverย  however a team will be offered a draft pick (not the one they would like ).

It's all over for the Weid. He is not an AFL talent in fact he just scraps in as a VFL player. Play anyone who has presence and a bit of aggression. At the very least we need someone who worries the backs he is playing against.ย

  • AFLW PREVIEW: St. Kilda

The Demons return to Casey Fields (aka the Field of Dreams) this Saturday to host the Saints in Round 2. If youโ€™re feeling lucky, head down the Monash for some family-friendly footyโ€”you might even walk away a winner. The first 5,000 adults through the gate will receive an entry into the $10,000 helicopter ball drop. With Caseyโ€™s infamous wind, what could possibly go wrong? Closest ball to the pin wins. So spread the word, get down thereโ€”and good luck!

  • PREVIEW: Collingwood

Way back in March we contemplated the possibility of a Demon resurgence after Simon Goodwinโ€™s summer of love.ย Manyย issues at the club had seemingly been addressed, key players were returning from injury and a brand new day was about to dawn. We imagined the coach pulling a rabbit out of a hat. The team would roar up the charts, push aside every opponent and make its way to a Grand Final ending in ultimate triumph with Goody and Max holding the premiership cup aloft under a shower of red and blue ticker tape.
