Bobby McKenzie 2,408 Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 Well, as expected its all over but lets look at the positives, 1. We rose from 17th to 9th; Quite a rise and a big percentage improvement . 2, We beat old rivals, Carlton, Collingwood , Essendon and Hawthorn all in one season. WHEN DID WE LAST ACHIEVE SUCH A FEAT? Long, long time ago me thinks. We also nearly took the honours against Geelong with a missed gettable goal after the siren and had a real chance to beat Brisbane losing by 4 points. We took care of St Kilda and North Melbourne, teams that have had the wood on us for many years. Finishing higher than Sydney and GWS too must be noted as positives. 3. Our two early draft picks showed that they will be stars of the future and Ed Langdon was a wonderful addition to our list. Young Rivers too gives hope for the future. Individually, we had positives with the potential AA selection of Petracca, Stephen May and Max Gawn. We are nowhere near perfect yet but heading in the right direction. Go DEMONS 2021 and beyond. 22 8 Quote
Lucifers Hero 40,707 Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 (edited) Comparing to the 2019 debacle is clutching at straws. And a depressing assessment of our season to use wins over bottom of the ladder teams to find positives and suggesting games we lost were positives because we nearly won them. A more balanced view would acknowledge we nearly lost to Carlton, Giants and Saints. Its great that 2 or 3 players have improved and that we have a handful of excellent players but hardly a ringing endorsement of our list or performance. A few positives yes, but the season was a Fail. Simples. Edited September 20, 2020 by Lucifer's Hero 11 Quote

Go DEMONS 2021 and beyond. 2004. Not sure if that's as long as you thought. There were good things about this year, that's for sure. So good on you for highlighting them on a day I'm sure the majority of us feel, for the umpteenth time in our MFC supporting years, down in the dumps. 4 Quote
Vineytime 855 Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 A lame sporting organisation with a weak inner lining. Mentally fragile. When is enough of this under performing enough.. Always disappointing following the MFC. 1 Quote
dazzledavey36 56,265 Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 I'm sure I'll get to the positives when I'm ready. Its not like 2017 where I was just gutted. I am more just super disappointed and frustrated at the same time. Its another year wasted. Which ever way you look at at it. We had a list that was injury free, and yet its stuff like team selections, and poor game day management is what continues to kill us. 13 Quote

Dee tention 619 Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 The Dees in my opinion have some very very very easy decisions to make! Ruthlessness starts from the top! So I expect Bartlett ? to be sharp and ready. 4 Quote

They used the injury excuse last year but luckily they cant use that this year. I knew that excuse last year was bs and it infuriated me to hear it 2 Quote
kallangurdemon 551 Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 If I returned here after being out of contact with the outside world for 6 months and was told that trac max may oliver are all in lt m x for AA selection that we picked up a cracker in Langdon and good young guns in rivers and jackson I might assume that we would be up to our necks in the finals series . But that sadly is not the case .the reason i believe is that the list falls away too quickly .WE need 6 to 8 b and c graders to replace the d graders on the list . .North made headlines by sacking 11 and I see no reason not to trade/delist a similar number. 4 Quote
Age 485 Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 2019 we hand injuries. 2020 we had almost a full list all year, COVID can’t be used an excuse because every club has to do deal with it. The coach had a team he has pretty much built, with no injuries and yet, in reality, we were nowhere near it. If the club is serious about expecting high standards then these low standards that have been set by the coach cannot be accepted and he must be made accountable. Nothing will change though, why would we expect it to? 4 Quote
DeeZone 10,574 Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 Well the season is over for us, time for the Boys to dust themselves down and reflect on what could have been if we had of been good enough. We are closer now than we were in 2019 but I feel that we are still 4 - 6 players away from being a really good side. It's time now to clear away some of our NQR players and for the recruitment staff to target those missing links that we will need going forward. Like BM mentioned we have found a few potential young guns and Langdon is the star recruit of 2020. Our core group is top class, our back line is now very capable, we have some good forwards but that is our area that needs to be addressed in the off season. Go Dee's..!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 1 Quote
Pates 9,695 Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 There are some positives to take and there'll be a time I take them in but right now the season is done and we've even got the cherry on top with Bennell breaking the COVID rules. A very Melbourne way to end our season, 9th placed and a $50K fine. 1 Quote

Nowhere near it, but Oliver should be in the conversation IMV. Had an excellent and underrated season again. Will definitely finish top 3 in the BnF. Agree with the rest of it, but not good enough. Spot on being 4-6 players away from a good team. I have said many times we are let down by our bottom 4-6 players every week. The other 16-18 players who are as good as in any side just can't cover for them week in and week out. Our last 4-6 players and it doesn't matter who we pick, they are just not of AFL standard. Yesterday again we were let down by at least 6 players who could not get a touch and barely got any SC points. We need to get a more even spread of players and improve our bottom few. No need to go out and spend a fortune. Just improve our poorer players. Quote
Hellaintabadplacetobe 4,335 Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 Our season is completely unacceptable and yet many choose to accept that it was OK under the circumstances due to covid, travel factors, 4-5 day breaks etc. It was a failure. We are still devoid of leadership, still make mind boggling team selection and still fail to stop teams when they are on a roll. The only positive for me was the potential we've seen in our first 3 draft picks and the recruitment of Langdon. Sadly, it hardly even hurts any more, we've seen the same [censored] show on high rotation for 50 years. At least we've got learnings. 5 Quote

Earl Hood 6,167 Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 Why am I sure that we will have a great preseason and all will be positive in 2021 then we will lose some early games because we are lacking connection between our midfield and our forwards, our mids are bombing it long, while our forwards are leading out etc, etc. Then there will be the inaccuracy in front of goal, gee we need to look at our kicking technique etc. Then our mids learn to lower their eyes to pick targets.....Oh and then there will be selection, where we experiment with people unsuited to their new roles, slowly work that out and eventually drop them or move them to their more suitable roles. I suppose my point is we seem to be caught in some Ground Hog day circumstance with Goody. We start every season with the same game plan deficiencies, then slowly rectify them thru the season but drop vital games along the way. This has been a feature of the last 4 seasons, 2017 to 2020. 5 1 1 Quote

Supreme_Demon 4,132 Posted September 20, 2020 Posted September 20, 2020 Yet another frustrating and disappointing season which was a waste. Could of beaten Geelong and Brisbane in those close games. Should of beaten Sydney and Fremantle. Still mentally weak and always getting disappointed. Bot the football department and the players need to be told in no uncertain terms that this type of inconsistency is not good enough. A lot of players need to take a good hard look at themselves. If they aren't willing to bleed for the Demons jumper then we don't want them. In the end we sadly finish on the ladder where we deserve which is 9th. We are already getting trolled as "Ninthbourne" after the results in 2017 and now in 2020. Simon Goodwin is hanging onto his job as Melbourne coach by the skin of his teeth. Time to actually get ruthless Melbourne and not just talk about it. Quote

But he won’t, I expect we will hold an internal review and a few who don’t really control things will get the chop. To sack the coach would be an admission by the Chairman and the board that hey made a huge mistake. Sadly not a lot will happen between now and the next season.
